Land Lord Issues

About 4 mins months ago we informed our landlord that we had mold on our bedroom ceiling and water dripping out of ours walls in our bedroom as well as our spare room. He effectively did nothing all winter to address the issue. Wr have to clean the mold every second day.He blamed the mold on us taking showers , mind you there was no mold in our bathroom...lol He asked us the other day if the issue resolved itself, like how?? He is is telling us that we will have to move. I should also mention that he has been trying to find a reason to kick us out for years, he never fails to mention how fast he will evict us so he can get new tenants that will pay more rent. We are at a loss what to do. We lived here for 15 years.

Have PEI vehicle rules changed ?

Have the rules changed for dark window tint ? I thought it was illegal here but I am seeing more of it every day.

I’ve also noticed quite a few large gun decals on cars lately. Is that permitted ? It’s frightening - especially when combined with dark tinted windows !

Dental Hygiene Job

Upvotes

Hello!

I’m a Dental Hygienist looking at possibly relocating to PEI. Does anyone have any recommendations of dentists offices that are great to work for or ones to avoid? Where I live now, there’s the great ones and then the ones everyone knows to avoid. Appreciate any help or suggestions!

Island man who started string of cottage fires in 2023 to be sentenced in May

Crown and defence lawyers made their sentencing arguments in a P.E.I. courtroom Friday for a man who was behind a string of fires that destroyed cottages and damaged homes in 2023.

Some of the victims also spoke about how they were affected by the crimes committed by Dakota Ellis.

Last May, the Donaldston man pleaded guilty to a number of charges related to arson as well as breaking and entering to commit an indictable offence. Ellis was 19 at the time of the incidents.

Three cottages were destroyed in Donaldston, Stanhope and Scotchfort. A home and a lifeguard hut in Prince Edward Island National Park were also damaged.

Joanne Cook inherited her cottage from her parents, and told the court Friday that what was lost in the fire can't be replaced.

She said she doesn't know if she can afford to rebuild — and even if she could, she's not sure she'd ever feel safe there again.

Another woman whose home was damaged told the court she's lived in fear every day since the incidents because Ellis has not been in custody.

Another family had a statement read in court on their behalf. They said they had planned to make memories in their cottage and the loss of that dream is what's hit them the hardest.

But they said they forgive Ellis and hope he turns his life around.

Ellis declined to speak in court on Friday.

According to a portion of the agreed statement of facts read out in the Charlottetown courtroom last year, Ellis broke into two cottages in Donaldston and one in Stanhope on Nov. 24 and 25, 2023, and used some type of fuel to start the fires.

Also on Nov. 25, a homeowner on Afton Road in Scotchfort reported an odour of diesel and the presence of soot outside their house. There was no serious damage to the property.

On Nov. 26, a lifeguard station in the Stanhope Beach area was vandalized, and authorities found soot and traces of an accelerant at the scene.

Ellis and a youth who can't be named because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act were eventually arrested by P.E.I. RCMP.

Ellis later told police he didn't like a young person who lived in one of the houses he targeted.

The Crown asked for Ellis to be sentenced to a total of four years and six months, saying the crimes have had a significant impact on the victims. They argued that he already had a criminal record at the time of the offences and made a conscious decision to set the fires. If the crime is considered an arson spree, the Crown wants a six- to seven-year global sentence.

The defence attorney is asking for 12 months in custody, saying Ellis has a history of mental illness and rehabilitation is important.

Justice Gregory Cann said he wants to take time to review the material. Ellis will wear an electronic monitoring device in the meantime.

The case was adjourned until May 13 for sentencing.

I'm honestly really interested to see what kind of sentence Ellis gets. Considering he is one of the two accused who threw pop cans at cars in the Stratford/Kinloch area a couple years ago, I suspect that his sentence may be harsher this time.

Question Landlord canceling lease agreement before moving in

My partner and I were supposed to move into our new place May 1st. Our landlord messaged me two days ago telling us that the place wasn't actually available until June 1st so they could either send us back the damage deposit or cancel the lease agreement. I told them we were not okay with either option as we wouldn't have a place to stay during May, and then they sent us back our security deposit unprompted.

We've been trying to negotiate with them, but the only compromise they are making is a 50 dollar discount per month once we start our rent on June 1st. They've told us we can either take it or they would start looking for new tenants next week.

Is there anything I can do about this? This is in Charlottetown

Selling/Buying Moving to PEI

I am looking to potentially relocate to PEI. I have visited a few times for work but mainly stayed in Charlottetown. I’m looking for very quiet small town atmosphere. Potentially water front or close to the water. If possible walking distance to shops (grocery etc..) I don’t crave the hustle and bustle of a “city” vibe. Thanks!

A Quick Love Letter

Hi PEI! Long time lurker, first time poster here. Wanted to take a quick second and share some pics and memories from my favorite province/island. I’ll add some context to the pics and random thoughts below:

1.) This was taken back in Oct ‘24. First time back on the island in ~20ish years. One of my parents is from Canada (NB), so we’d spend a week or two on the island and visit family growing up. All of that to say, beyond being objectively the best, the island has a truly special place in my heart.

2.) The bridge! Still scares me…but I’ll take that over the ferry any day. I’m probably just being dramatic, but that boat made the LOUDEST NOISE when it hit the dock/thing that made it come to a stop. Having seen titanic, I was completely convinced the ferry would somehow end up split in half.

3.) Finally.

4.) Some quintessential essentials. *** I realize, especially now, lays may be a controversial choice. I recognize Humpty Dumpty as a quality option, but I need my tastebuds to be assaulted by ketchup flavor so…I apologize for me sins. Coffee crisp is unrivaled though

5.) The Mecca of punny shirts and ice cream. The most recent obsession was either mooey gooey or wowie cowie…something like that. Either way, this establishment has cumulatively taken years off my life, and I’m forever grateful. The last time around, a lot of the shirts seemed to be direct pop culture references, and maybe I overlooked it…but I miss when it would say something like, “common cow seeks greener pastures” and has the cow in a thematic setting.

6.) Red rocks (Bedeque)

7.) The Starlite Diner isn’t usually this blurry. But if I had a dollar for every time I asked someone to play “you ain’t nothin but a hound dog” on the jukebox…I’d have enough for one bridge toll!

8.) Coastal cliffs (Bedeque)

9.) I THINK this used to be the Village Store. Could be wrong on the name, but it was this awesome convenience store where you could pick your own candy and get little paper grab bags of assorted sweets. All the essentials, movies for rent in the back room (I think). We’d go get soda (pop) in glass bottles…back when they had “rewards” under the cap like ‘you win a free soda’. Give me a kinder egg and a pop and I was a happy kid for hours

*if that IS the village convenience store, shout out to the lady who used to walk her leashed cat on Callbeck St. that always blew my mind, and was a staple of our vacation. I hope you’re doing well, the trend has really caught on. Someone owes you a bunch of that indestructible/colorful money, eh?

10.) The spuds, my buds (from the bright red mud). This is from the potato and antique farm machinery museum. One of my prized possessions, albeit it a little weathered.

  1. & 12.) I wish I could spend the rest of my life here. I try to explain to people how amazing it is, but neither words nor pictures do proper justice

13.) the stairs from the Bedeque cottages my family has rented, dating back to the 90s, down to the beach below.

13.) I love the island AND its inhabitants. Always have! Some ladies and I dish at Cavendish Beach

Couple other super quick things:

  • Finally getting to ride Cyclone at Sandspit was one of the happier moments of my childhood.

  • Honorable mention to rainbow valley and that abandoned space shuttle and…wasn’t there an Epcot ball replica?? Driving by that as a little kid made my imagination run WILD…is that a real space shuttle?? Is Canadian Mickey down there?? What are you????

  • Anne of green gables. Loved going to the Green Gables Heritage Place. The story being uniquely PEI was always so cool. Then cows started carrying their own raspberry cordials toward my last visits!

  • Watching the ‘96 Olympics with my cousins on a tiny tv because that’s basically all that would come in. Huge seafood dinners of fresh lobster, mussels, and clams…almost crashing my moms boxy 90s Volvo into a ditch because she was foolish enough to let me try to drive

  • The College of Piping and watching their shows! I wish I could find that claddagh ring…

Anyway…sorry for randomly ranting and rambling. Hopefully this doesn’t come off tone-deaf or inappropriate. My only intention is to express my undying love, loyalty, and gratitude to this island. And to this country. I unironically and unapologetically love you Canada 🇨🇦

Vehicule inspection standards on PEI?

Does anyone know where I can find the standards a vehicle shall meet to pass the inspection? For ex : the brakes. What are the criteria to pass?

I read the "Motor Vehicle Inspection Regulations" and I saw this very unclear sentence : "The Registrar shall prepare a manual prescribing minimum specifications and standards of performance for equipment and procedures for the purposes of a periodic inspection under these regulations."

Does it mean that each garage and/or make can define their own standards??

Best local place to get lumber that isn't Home Depot?

Hey folks, first time home owner. Place needs a bit of work. I need studs, moulding/trim, plywood etc. but not in huge quantities... I'm mostly doing repairs, not full on renovations. Home depot was convenient and stocked a wide variety of materials but I want to avoid it whenever possible. Metro Home Hardware didn't seem to have much and I'm trying to sort of match (I'm not that picky, just ballpark) what's already in the home. Would Kent have everything I need? Is there a smaller Island owned/operated mill that would do small volume sales to someone like me? Would that be way more expensive, or way cheaper? or about the same? I'd like to support local if they have what I need at a reasonable price. Thanks!

Do any island celiacs have any recommendations for local gf bakeries or safe restaurants?

I’m newly diagnosed celiac, unfortunately I’m also a vegetarian which makes it harder. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for celiac safe bakeries or restaurants around the island? I know not eating at home always poses a risk, but it would be nice to go out and eat the odd time with my bf or friends.

Social Work Jobs in PEI

Hello!

I apologize in advance if this isn't the right place to ask this. I'm a social worker in Ontario who is hoping to find a job and relocate to beautiful PEI and have had absolutely no luck. When I completed my Master of Social Work degree here, we were told how in need the East Coast was for medical and social services (I know there is a massive need for doctors, but from what I understood there is a growing need for mental health support as well). I'm extremely passionate about fighting/advocating for access to mental health services, which is why I became more interested in relocating to PEI to help out in anyway I could.

I hope I don't come off as arrogant here, but what confuses me the most is that most positions I apply for ask for a BSW qualification and I am an MSW. So it can't be due to a lack of education that I am not being selected. I have completed 6 years of university, I've trained clinically in CBT, DBT, ACT, IFS, CPT, etc. I completed both my advanced placements in community mental health, have crisis intervention experience, and also have experience working with neurodivergent folks.

Also, I just want to mention, my goal here is NOT to take jobs from residents of PEI. If that is where these positions are going, that is absolutely amazing. But what I've noticed is that the job postings just...stay up? What I'm confused about is, why does the PEI government continuously advertise need for help, yet when qualified applicants say "hey I will literally leave my entire life behind to come and help you guys out", no one responds?

So anyways friends, this is my long winded way of saying: what the heck?? Is there something I am doing wrong here? Are there requirements I may be missing? Is there someone I should reach out to?

Thank you to anyone who has suggestions, I truly appreciate it :)
