DISCUSSION Hey guys has anyone ever used these ice pods or similar products that are safe for our babies to keep them cool? (And any recommendations, I'm worried a frozen water bottle might burst while I'm out).

And we’re spending it at the fucking vets AGAIN because they won’t stop sneezing a ton of porphyrin 😭

THEY DID LOSE WEIGHT THO WOOO

Beans’s chart says “friendly” but Winston has never lost his “unfriendly” title tho lmao

They’re the best thing to happen to me I love them so dearly even though Winston is STILL out to get me lmao

Please enjoy these pics of my super cute chronically sick babies

DISCUSSION Nightmare about my rattie

Upvotes

Dreamt my rat got outside and I was in full panic mode combing the neighborhood worried of a million different things that could have happened.

I think I found him at the end of the dream and he darted back into the house but he was hiding in the house so I couldn’t find him and check if it was him.

When I woke up I gave him so many snacks and pets. He’s perfectly alright. He was deep asleep but willing to wake up for cheerios.

I’ve had many stressful dreams about protecting my rats or them getting out of their cage. But never to this extent. It was awful.

I got these two from a lady on Facebook they were from an accidental litter, she drove about an hour to bring them to me, they are both boys their brothers from the exact same litter but they have a huge size difference, can I get some name suggestions? They're 8 weeks old, and no they don't live in a tank at all that was just what they traveled in

RIP Goodbye Fletch-a-Sketch

Today I said goodbye to the last of my 3 boys, Fletcher. I had initially gotten 3, Eugene, Morris and Fletch. Eugene was 3 when we got him so he went quickly, Morris followed shortly when having some bladder issues, but Fletcher outlived his brothers by a good year, and he lived to 3 and a half! I’m not planning on getting more rats, and since these were my first I didn’t know how to bond, which is why I left Fletch alone, but he did fairly well on his own with just me. I would take him on walks in a cat backpack (that my cats never liked) and he loved to either climb out and sniff and sit on my shoulder, or sleep in the bottom as my walking rocked him back and forth. My boys were rescues and I swear they had no fear instinct, they had touched noses with both my cats and dogs, and often let their hanging chews smack them in the face. He’s going to be buried in the backyard with his brothers and predecessor Guinea pig. Suppose I just wanted to dump this to the void so my friends and family can get a small break. I’m planning a tattoo for all 3 of them

CUTENESS Reid is a soap lover

This is Reid. Every morning he greets me, I take him out of the rat cage, and I let him run around in my bathroom while I get ready for the day. He thinks that our Dial antibacterial bar soap is the most tasty forbidden snack ever.

HELP Vets- Triangle/Triad, North Carolina

Upvotes

Does anyone know who neuters rats in my area? Preferably someone who doesn’t cost an arm, and leg?

Edit: for more info he about a 6 or 7 month old Fancy Rat. I’m located close to Greensboro but am willing to make a drive.

I got him from petsmart so I unfortunately don’t have a whole lot of information on him. He has gotten aggressive the older he has gotten, and it’s only gotten worse with time. The rat community has recommended neutering him but I don’t know anyone near me who works on rats. My current vet only does dogs, cats, and farm animals

CUTENESS Since Jeanette passed I had to get my other girl a new friend. I couldn’t contain myself and got her 3 new ones.

I thought there’d be some problems getting Jolyne used to new friends so shortly after Jeanette passed away, but they all instantly bonded and I haven’t seen her this active since the passing. I got them around 3 days after Jeanette passed which was a little hard since I didn’t want to ‘replace’ her. But seeing Jolyne alone made me feel so bad. And knowing she feels happy again now makes me feel a whole lot better.

I’ll still forever miss my girl though.

HELP Rats with URI

I just got two rats around five days ago, both around two months old. This morning I noticed that one of them is making this awful grumbling noise that I'm almost certain is a URI. I want to treat this as soon as I can, but it is Sunday and no vet near me is open. I use an Aspen bedding with a low dust level and sift it before adding it to their cage, so I don't believe that is the cause. I'm really worried about my rats, and I assume that they both have URIs at this point. I've heard some people say that certain antibiotics can treat rats with URIs, but I don't want to screw up because I tried to help them myself. Keep in mind, I am not refusing to see a vet, but I don't have any choice until tomorrow. Is there anything I could do to treat them for now, will they be fine until tomorrow?

DISCUSSION Critter Nation Questions

Hey y’all, I’m just looking to bounce some ideas off of some fellow rat owners!

I currently have a single CN cage with my 4 boys. Everything works on that front.

I didn’t originally intend to, but I have adopted two girls from the classroom I work in. (They were taken care of properly and I got to have input too!!)

Would it be possible to get a critter nation add on and keep them separate? Like two separate cages stacked? Would there be any way to do anything like that aside from having a smaller cage sitting on top? (Which is what I’m doing now)

Is it bad for the males and females to be in the same room? I am EXTREMELY careful about making sure the doors to one or the other are closed when opening.

I really want to make this work!! I also wouldn’t mind getting a couple more girls to balance out the social dynamics for my ladies. The thing being, I’d need a bigger cage.

Thanks in advance, everyone!

HELP Losing a cage mate

I know it's important for cage mates to examine the body to process and grieve. All 3 have been siblings and together since birth.

How should I let them examine his body? Inside the cage? Outside the cage? How long do I give them with him? Do i need to do a deep cleaning on their cage after he passes? Anything else I should know/ do?

HELP travel questions

i’m thinking about getting rats sometime soon, maybe later this year (i have never owned rats or any rodents in my life, if it helps). every summer me and my mom go up north to visit family for about a month, and i’m wondering what to do with the rats whenever i go. the drive is about 15 hours long and we split it into two days and stay at a hotel. should i leave the rats at home and get somebody to take care of them, or do you think i could take them with me? i’m worried about the drive and the new location stressing them out. thanks in advance!

Hi again I have a question for you, so our breeder suggest to put our carrier in the cage when we got home , place treats around and a shirt of mine in there and kinda let them come out on their own. So I did. One boy came out, and explored and played but his brother won’t leave the carrier, he’s poked out and smelled my hand , ate some close bye foods but he has stayed in there… I’m a bit worried.. if he doesn’t fully come out this morning should I scoop him up?
