Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Other (requires mod approval) I feel stagnant with my editing skills

The title says it all. I've been editing professionally for a youtuber in the VTuber niche for a while now, but recently I feel that I'm not improving stylistically and creatively. My boss and peers say that my edits are good enough, but at this point, I'm not satisfied with good enough after seeing what others in my niche could reach. I know comparing yourself to others is stupid, and perfection doesn't exist. It's just soul crushing whenever I review my edits, and I don't feel the same enjoyment I did with my past edits. I have the drive to improve. I want to be better.

How do you guys get out of this slump? How do you improve your edits?

Tech Support Should I splice all of my clips into one single track before exporting?

Hi guys!

Super new to editing- I am about to export a video and need some advice on the above.

Currently I have one long track, and above that track I have placed all of the clips that I want to to cut between in a second track. When I play this back on the CapCut player, my video appears as I want it to, playing the cut clips (on top) over the one continuous clip (underneath).

Technically I can export this project now, and it will look as I want it to. However, is it of any benefit to cut/arrange the clips into one single track? Will exporting the two tracks cause any unwanted delays/sync issues/weird overlap etc between the clips when exported?

Appreciate any advice on this one!

TLDR: Is it advisable to cut all of my clips into one single track, and export this one single track?

Tech Support Editing a 4k footage in HD timeline. How bad is this for quality? (DaVinci)

I'm getting a conflicting advice on this workflow and recently I discovered that it's apparently a very bad practice. I saw this in some random YouTube tutorial

So the advice was to upload your 4k footage and don't change the timeline settings till the very end (it's set to HD in Davinci). At the end just change the timeline settings to 4k and export in 4k.

I always thought the app would just stretch the original footage back to 4k but as I discovered it throws pixels away from the 4k footage when I drop it to the HD timeline and ar the end just upscales from that point, it's no longer connected to the original 4k quality.

So the way to work with 4k footage is to start editing in 4k timeline right away and use proxies to make it easier to edit

Am I understanding it correctly?

Software Does CapCut ruin video quality at all?

Long story short, I ripped some episodes from a show from my Blu Rays and I want to change the intro. I downloaded the alternative show intro from YouTube and I want to insert it into each episode so I'm going to use CapCut to edit it this way. When I actually export and download the video, will the footage diminish in quality AT ALL? Or will it remain completely as it was before. If it does destroy quality, then could anyone reccomend me a free video editor that doesn't?

Thanks.

Anyone struggle with this? I have the bottom tier iphone 12 mini. 12 gbs i think? I'm pulling vids from a shared folder. The way I have to do this is go to shared folder get about 40-50 vids and save them to my library. Then plug it in to my pc. Drag and drop. Go back to my phone delete the vids. Then go to recently deleted vids and delete all that. Repeat the process untill all the vids are transfered. Am I trippin or is there a better way to do this? Is there something through itunes or another program to speed this up?

How did they do that? How to do Timelapse with countdown effect in real time on screen

Wanted to do a working day in the life video and use a similar countdown effect as the one in this video (GREAT watch btw!). What’s the best way to set this up so I can actively see the countdown clock while im working and pause if I need to (like deya seems to do in the video)?

https://youtu.be/F0gUyTIQad4?si=_CgWz6G1y3wIookp

I will probably use my DJI osmo pocket 3 for the main Timelapse footage and then another cam setup for any other shots I need to take.

In her video, deya seems to pause the Timelapse at points as well to share how she’s feeling etc. I would like to do something similar.

Let me know if you guys have an idea how I could achieve a similar effect to all these using my pocket 3, a mirrorless canon, and iPhone (if needed as third cam). I edit in Premiere Pro but am definitely more of a beginner, so if this overall effect is just way too complex I’m cool w just doing hourly countdowns flashing up on screen - or doing something like “hour 1”, “hour 2”, etc etc

TIA!!

Tech Support Google Drive and Devices won't Play file

I am researching a playback issue. I have a professional video editing system, but I used ClipChamp to quick fix a few files (Sometimes Premiere Pro is too much for quick tasks). I rendered the file, but Google Drive reports it is an unsupported format, and no device can play the file. In VLC it is reported as " H264-MP4 AVC (part 10)(avc1)" . It IS an MP4 format, and it plays perfectly on my PC. Any advice as to how I can get this to play?

How did they do that? Video plugin for filling a screen with dots/pixels?

Need some help and if I’m not posting to the right thread, please let me know. I hope I can explain this well enough. Looking for a way to fill a whole screen with pixel size dots until the whole screen is one color. Is there a plug-in or an easy way to do this? I mainly Final Cut but can use premiere and after effects. Thanks for your help.

Tech Support Editing videos with soft subs in Avidemux

Hi 👋 I'm editing a few tvshow videos (mkv format, basically cutting portions of the video to save space) with avidemux but the problem is whenever I'm saving the video in the end the soft subs are not being included into the saved video clip. Any suggestions or help to correct this will be most welcome.

Also I would like to add that I'm doing this purely for my own vie2ing and no business. 😇

Tech Support 'warp stabilizer needs clip to match pixel aspect ratio of sequence' - I'm getting thin black lines on top and bottom of video - any fix?

When trying to use warp stabilizer, I get the warning that the 'warp stabilizer needs clip to match pixel aspect ratio of sequence'.

I assume this is also related to the issue that I'm getting thin black lines on the top and bottom of my footage when exporting in Premiere. Even when previewing in the sequence. Scaling up doesnt work, ive double checked the timeline settings and I'm using Square Pixels (1) , progressive scan.

I think this is due to, when looking at the properties of the clip, for some reason the aspect ratio has been recorded as '1.0075' instead of 1? I'm shooting on an FX3 and have never run into this issue, I have no idea why it changed the aspect ratio ever so slightly.

Lastly, when I create a timeline from clip, that seems to get rid of it. But it's a 59.94 clip and I want a 23.98 timeline, so I want to create my own timeline and THEN bring the clip in.

Let me know your thoughts! Thank you

How did they do that? How to make my own audio recordings for study purposes?

I want to make audio recordings that I can listen to offline.
What I am looking for:
+ youtube compatability (for while listening on wifi and being able to visually see the audio length -> while also having have those little checkpoint labeled timestamps for ease of skipping or returning to "chapters")
+ mp3 compatability for my little portable audio player
+ most beginner-friendly audio/video recording software (I will be recording several individual audio clips, of which I want to be able to control pauses in between)

What software should I be using?

Software Insta 360x4 pixels blinking after exporting

I’ve just bought my insta360x4 new, from the official website. Filmed 8k30fps same day and everything was fine until I tried to export the video from insta360 editing app on my windows laptop. After exporting I’ve received a video with pixels blinking through the whole video, before exporting nothing like that occurred. I’ve texted the support on the consultant couldn’t help we with my problem so she redirected my problem to the technical support, they have answered but nothing worth because it was some things that didn’t fix my problem and was kinda strange. I’ve tried different setting in the app that could cause this problem, tried reinstalling the editing app and tried to lower quality and bitrate - noting helped ;(

My laptop metal is Windows 11, 13th gen intel (r) core i7-13620h, 16gb, 1tb, Nvidea GeForce rtx 4050 laptop

I’ve used Insta360 studio, software version was 5.5.3

When exporting I tried both codec 264,265 didn’t make any changes to the problem. I exported in mp4 file. Hopefully someone could help me. Thank you !

Tech Support How do I match the color and visual style of different stock footage clips for one cohesive look?

Hey folks, I'm working on a video where I’m using multiple stock footage clips, but I’m running into a problem—the visual style and color grading of each clip is all over the place. Some are super warm and vibrant, others are flat or cool-toned. When I line them up in the timeline, it just feels messy and inconsistent.

I'm editing on CapCut for PC, but I also have DaVinci Resolve available if that gives me more control. My goal is to match all the clips so the final video feels cohesive and polished—like one unified visual story instead of a mix of different styles. Thanks in advance!
