Community Updates 🌱 What's Happening in the Community?

This is a monthly/bi-monthly post about the events & happenings in the r/chrome_extensions community. The aim for this post is to provide a summary of everything that happened in our community recently and what are the plans for upcoming weeks.

What happened recently? 🧐

What now? 🤔

  • I am reaching out to more cool people for AMA. Some people I'm reaching out to include the Creators of CRXJS, Developers of the Plasmo framework, Rusty Zone from YouTube, and some extension developers who work on very successful extensions. You can help me with this by reaching out to someone you know is doing good in the browser extensions space.
  • I'm creating a new Discord server for this subreddit where we'll be having voice events like tech discussions, learning sessions, live Q&A sessions with cool people, games & challenges, etc.
  • We will have wikis soon which will have resources and a roadmap to learn browser extension development.

That's it, thanks for reading, I hope it was helpful. Take care <3

Community Discussion Do You Want an AMA with an Expert in the Browser Extension Space?

Hey everyone! 👋

I’ve been thinking of organizing an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session with someone from the browser extension world, and I’d love to get your thoughts on it!

We could invite:

  • A developer of a popular framework like Plasmo or WXT
  • A content creator who specializes in extensions
  • A developer who’s built a lot of extensions
  • Someone who’s making a full-time income from extensions
  • Or is anyone else in the browser extension space you think would be cool to chat with?

Let me know if this is something you'd be interested in, and feel free to suggest any specific individuals you’d like to see involved!

Sharing Resources/Tips Low laptop volume was driving me crazy

Upvotes

I was watching a movie on my laptop, volume all the way up, but could barely hear the dialogue. Super annoying. I found this Chrome extension called Sound Boost Hub and gave it a shot. Instantly boosted the volume way beyond normal like night and day. No ads, no weird permissions, just works. Honestly saved my speakers (and my ears). Highly recommend if your audio ever feels too quiet.

Idea Validation / Need feedback From rejection burnout to building a solution - this one's for the job seekers, by one of us

There were days I opened LinkedIn, stared at the screen for 10 minutes, and just… closed it.

I didn’t know what to say. Didn’t know who to message. Didn’t even feel like a person anymore, just a guy with 12 open tabs and a sinking feeling in his gut.

So instead of sending another dead-end message, I opened VSCode.

I didn’t plan anything. I just built something I needed.

It’s a browser extension. Nothing fancy. No startup dreams.

It just helps me:

  • Save the notes I keep retyping.
  • Save the messages I keep tweaking.
  • Stop switching between 5 different apps.
  • Drop a job description and get a decent recruiter message without sounding like a chatbot.
  • Highlight text on LinkedIn → right-click → rephrase it or turn it into a comment that sounds like me.

And yeah, the comments, that was a big one.

You know that feeling ?

You see a post from someone you admire, You relate. You want to say something.

But your brain’s like, “Uhhh… what should I even comment ?”

So you scroll. Again.

This tool lets me highlight the post → pick a tone (like chill or confident) → and it gives me a couple of solid comments. Not spammy. Not fake deep.Just something that actually sounds like you put thought into it.

And yeah, there’s some AI magic in there. But the way it works? Let’s just say, it stays completely yours. No logins, no subscriptions, no creepy cloud stuff. It’s free, and it works when you want it to. That’s all I’ll say for now.

It’s not live yet. No website. No name. No logo.

But it’s the reason I opened LinkedIn again after ghosting it for weeks.

And maybe, just maybe, it’ll help someone else too.

Sharing Resources/Tips I built a Chrome extension that transcribes audio from any tab in real time — any feedback is welcome!

Hey everyone! 👋

I recently built a Chrome extension called TranscribeFlow — it transcribes audio from any active browser tab using AI (currently Whisper AI under the hood).

It’s mainly designed for:

Meeting transcriptions (Google Meet, Zoom, etc.)

YouTube/video content note-taking

Accessibility use-cases

Unlike other tools, you don’t need to upload recordings — it captures and transcribes directly from your browser.

Here’s how it works:

You open a tab with audio (e.g., meeting, video).

Turn on TranscribeFlow.

It starts transcribing live, and you can copy/export it instantly.

Would love to hear your thoughts:

Is this something you’d use?

What features should I add?

Any UX annoyances?

🧪 It’s still in early access, so I’d appreciate any feedback or bug reports!

Here’s the link if you’d like to try it: https://transcribeflow.org/

Thanks for reading 🙏

Self Promotion This is my take on a prompt library. What do you think?

I’ve tried a bunch of prompt libraries and none of them really did what I needed, so I ended up building my own. I come from an enterprise software background, but this time I just wanted something simple, something that actually works and is easy for anyone to use.

I started building it about 4 months ago, and now it feels ready for some real feedback. I’d really appreciate your thoughts, especially if there’s something I’ve missed or could do better. This is my first time building a Chrome extension and I built it during my evenings and weekends so any feedback you have would be great.

It’s got features like folder management, variable placeholders, live search, and you can load in 50+ built-in prompts if you’re just getting started.

Self Promotion Say Goodbye to PR Clutter: Meet Bitbucket PR Enhancer!

Hello! I just published a small extension that I believe will help a bit user of Bitbucket during their Pull Request reviews! Basically, this extension smartly filters out completed activities so you can zero in on the unresolved items that need your attention.

Feel free to check my medium post to know more about the extension :)

Asking a Question How long does it take for your app to be approved?

Thumbnail timeforprice.com
2 Upvotes

A few days ago, I uploaded my Chrome extension to the Web Store — super excited to finally share it. But not long after, I got hit with a rejection. The reason? The privacy policy link was broken. I forgot to ship it to production on my landing page for Time for Price.

Totally fair — users should always know how their data is being handled. I jumped in, fixed the link immediately, double-checked everything, and resubmitted the extension the same day.

Now… still waiting.

I know approvals can take time, but watching the “Pending Review” status for days feels like staring at a loading bar that never moves. I’m staring at my inbox like it owes me money.

Hoping to hear back soon so I can finally get it out there.

Have you had this experience before with your chrome extension? Any suggestions?

Self Promotion Context-aware AI Chrome Extension

AskTheDev is a Chrome extension that lets you ask AI questions about the page you're on—context-aware and actually useful, as if you were asking the developers themselves. No switching tabs, no copy-pasting. Just hit the button, ask, and get answers fast. Great for devs, researchers, and the terminally curious. Download here:

Self Promotion Accidentally left a meeting while trying to mute myself… so I built this.

After one too many misclicks during important calls (including my promotion meeting 😬), I made MeExit, a free Chrome extension that pops up a quick “Are you sure?” before you leave Google Meet.

No setup, no config. Just a few lines of JavaScript saving your career.

Self Promotion Built a kiosk exit button extension for a personal project, decided to publish in case it help anyone else.

Hi everyone, first time posting here, so as the title says I created a chrome extension that adds an exit button used in Kiosk mode for a personal project that I needed.

There where some alternatives but I needed a little mode customization so I just created my own extension.

Sharing here in case it help anyone else: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/kiosk-exit-button/daliphodbodnmaljedemmkdlafkoopal

All customizations:

• Type: Choose between text or image.
• Contents: Define the text and color or upload an image.
• Position: Specify the button's placement on the screen.
• Size: Adjust the button's dimensions.
• Auto-hide Timer (in seconds): Set the inactivity time (in seconds) after which the button will automatically disappear.

I can refine it more or add new stuff if there are enough people using it.
Alternatively you can fork the project and implement whatever you need, it is open-source: https://github.com/DragosPancescu/chrome-kiosk-exit

That is all :)

Asking a Question Is there any way to download the Source files that appear in devtools?

I tried to use two extensions Save All Resources and Extension Source Downloader, but the files appear (which are the ones I am interested in) appear as No Content: webpack:///directory-name. I remember I used these extensions a while ago and it worked but recently I tried to use it on both Windows and Linux, but it did not work.

Self Promotion I made a free browser extension that dynamically recognizes procrastination and intervenes on it

Hi, have you had a journey of struggling with procrastination, trying out tools and then uninstalling them in frustration? I made ProcrastiScan, yet another one you might ditch or finally embrace. It's particularly designed to be neurodiversity-friendly, especially in regards to ADHD, autism and demand avoidance.

Why?

There are lots of blocking/mindfulness extensions out there, but I often found them either too rigid (blocking whole sites I sometimes need) or too simplistic (simple keyword matching/indifferent to my behavioral patterns). What makes ProcrastiScan different? It tries to understand what you're actually looking at. Some potential use cases for this approach:

  • you need to browse some distracting website for a task, but also procrastinate there
  • you find yourself overwhelmed with dozens of tabs open and want to sort out all the distracting ones with one click
  • you are stuck in a hole of executive dysfunction or inertia and need a push to get out of it
  • you tried nudging tools but got annoyed about staring at a green screen for 10 seconds when you just need to take a quick look somewhere
  • you tried other blocking tools but found yourself sabotaging them out of frustration about rules being incompatible with reality
  • you don't realize when you start to become distracted

How?

Instead of just blocking "youtube.com" entirely, ProcrastiScan tries to figure out the meaning of the page you're on. You give it a simple description of your task (like "Research why birds can fly") and list some topics/keywords that are usually relevant (like "birds, physics, air, aerodynamics") and ones that usually distract you (like "funny videos, news, entertainment, music, youtube").

As you browse, it quietly calculates a "Relevance Score" for each tab based on these inputs and a "Focus Score" that tracks your level of concentration. If you start drifting too much and the score drops, it gives you a nudge.

Features

Some people prefer gentle nudges and other to block distracting content straight away, so you can choose whatever you prefer:

  • Tab Blocking: Automatically detect distracting tabs and block them
  • Procrastination List: Recognize and save distracting tabs for later
  • Chatbot: Engage in a focused conversation with an AI assistant to get back on track or reflect on why you got distracted (highly experimental)
  • Theme Nudging (Firefox only): Your browser toolbar will be colored in a bright red tone if you get distracted to increase your mindfulness
  • Dashboard: See at which times you were focused or distracted

Additionally, ProcrastiScan is completely free and no data is collected. All processing and storing happens on your device.

The extension can only see what happens in your browser, but you can optionally download a program to score other programs on your computer as well. Here is the GitHub repository with links to the browser extension stores, more infos on how it works and limitations, a setup guide, as well as a FAQ. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you decide to try it, as I spent a lot of time on this as my bachelor's thesis.

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates 200 users with little marketing

Post image
7 Upvotes

As another user did today, I'm glad my chrome extension has just reached 200 users!

I launched it a few months ago and it is still working well, though the growth is pretty slow due to no marketing at all.

What is the next step now? How can I grow it to 1000 users?

Self Promotion I couldn't find a good currency converter, so I built one!

Post image
11 Upvotes

So I was tired of looking for a currency converter that was simple, effective and fast, so I built one.

I am calling it Valora, the Simple Currency Converter: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/andiidnojndjmhjcedaoenpjdfbdobka/preview?hl=pt-BR&authuser=0

Key features:

  • Real-time exchange rates powered by HexaRate
  • Auto-updates as you type
  • Drag and drop to reorder currencies
  • Smart dropdowns with your 6 most recent currencies on top
  • Offline fallback with timestamped last rate
  • Visual alerts when rates are outdated

This is the first thing I successfully develop and publish - ever! Let me know your thoughts and feedback, thank you and hopefully it's useful to you too. :)

Sharing Resources/Tips Happy to see my chrome extension got featured badge :) took a while though

Splitview chrome extension with featured badge

Here's what I tried, benefits and mistakes to avoid:

Context: I built a chrome extn to do Google search/AI chat without opening a new tab. I made it for fun just for myself but got like 40+ users (no promo/marketing.)

What I tried for feature badge:

  1. Tried submitting for featured badge ( can't believe it but it works)
  2. Updated videos and clear description - I had to make couple of changes
  3. Pictures ( and icons) should be really clear and relevant
  4. Be careful with the category selection ( feel free to try things out)

Benefits:

  1. Impressions have gone up 4x but no change on page views ( will work on marquee thumbnail)
  2. Will update in a week's time if pageviews/installs go up.

Mistakes to avoid:

  1. Even if you are building it for yourself; consider the listing details from strangers' perspective. Else I have come across tons of very good Chrome extension not getting anywhere.

BTW.. here's how my extn in case you want to refer to it or try it out - https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/splitview-free-ai-chat-%E2%80%93/ejmdmbepoljejbdddffdfldigdkgcben?authuser=0&hl=e

Self Promotion Building a no-backend form service for extension devs — need feedback!

Hey folks 👋

I'm working on a simple backend service for developers building static landing pages for browser extensions (think: contact forms, subscribe forms, waitlists, bug report forms, etc).

Most of us don’t want to spin up a full backend just to capture a few form submissions.

This service will let you:

  • Send data to a single endpoint (/api/form/submit)

  • Choose between schema-based validation or fully flexible JSON

  • Store submissions securely and access them via a clean dashboard

  • Get up and running in minutes—no servers, no config

🔧 It's perfect for static sites (Next.js static export, Astro, plain HTML, etc.)

I'm building this in public, so if this sounds useful, I’d love your feedback or ideas.

💌 Join the wishlist here: FormGlow 🧵 And feel free to follow me for updates as I build this thing out (X/Twitter : @itsa_me_anass).

Would this be helpful for your extension’s landing page?

Asking a Question How to build a chrome extension

I really want to build a Chrome extension, but I have no clue where to start. I’m learning HTML, CSS, and JS, but I don’t even know how to get going with creating a Chrome extension. Can anyone point me to some good resources for beginners and let me know what tech stack I need to know for it?

My idea is to make an extension that gives a new quote every day when users click on it—something super simple that’ll help me practice coding in general.

All resources are welcomes thanks guys!

Sharing Journey/Experience/Progress Updates launched a chrome extension for onlyfans creators – any ideas to promote it?

Hey everyone,

we’ve just released a chrome extension specifically for onlyfans creators. https://www.whisper.fans/extension

the new extension enhances the whisper experience by allowing creators to:

  • follow back fans to reignite conversations with interested followers.
  • view fan purchase history to tailor interactions based on past behavior.
  • monitor fan spending to identify and prioritize top supporters.
  • create spender lists for targeted promotions and personalized engagement.
  • send mass messages and pay-per-views (PPVs) efficiently to selected fan groups.

our target audience is quite niche—adult content creators on onlyfans. we’ve tried influencer marketing ,google ads, and telegram communities, but we’re looking for fresh, budget-friendly strategies to promote the extension effectively.

any creative ideas on how to reach and engage this specific group? we’re open to unconventional approaches that have worked for others in niche markets.

thanks in advance for your suggestions! happy to share more about our development journey if you’re interested.

cheers,

oli
