Humor / Meme Am I the only one feeling like this?
929
u/effigymcgee Jan 15 '25
What love is anniversary getting? It’s a re-release with essentially no changes lol, a literal cut and paste amount of effort. SOD has new quest lines/items/dungeons/raid difficulties and mechanics etc

u/icedL337 Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25
Wondering the same thing, SoD is constantly getting updates, the only thing fresh classic got was dual spec and removal of buff/debuff cap which is a good thing
271
u/An_doge Jan 15 '25
THIS WAS LITERALLY ALL EVERYONE WAS ASKING FOR FOR LITERAL YEARS. BOTH CLASSIC AND CLASSIC PLUS WITH CHANGES. BOTH PLAYABLE TOGETHER. THIS IS GOOD.
87
u/niall_9 Jan 15 '25
Sure, but it’s not like its getting constant attention like the meme suggests.
SOD had a patch drop yesterday that makes it easier to get tier and crafted items. Few weeks ago they made runes accessible at level 1 making it easier to level.

Seems like they are actively experimenting in 1 version and bringing some of those positively received changes into anniversary/fresh, seems good.
I bet CATA version they will roll back to fresh if they haven’t already, idk but I haven’t played in awhile and It seems like it’s getting to be a good time to come back if I have the free time!

I'm betting MoP is gonna be pretty big. That was a lot of people's fav xpac
→ More replies (12)11
u/FUTFUTFUTFUTFUTFUT Jan 15 '25
How interesting, it was the opposite for me. MoP for me was the moment WoW "jumped the shark" from classic high fantasy to cartoonish caricatures, where it felt like the last of the big ideas from the original Warcraft universe had been exhausted and the devs were left to do their own world building, serving an expansion based on an April fools joke fleshed out with Jack Black movie characters and plagiarised asian lore. Admittedly I was already burned out, but it was the final straw in me quitting the game.
7
u/Pandinus_Imperator Jan 16 '25
Cataclysms constant pop culture references beat mop to it if you draw the line in silly caricatures.
9
u/MEDvictim Jan 16 '25
Except the pandarens were in WC3 and were a thing before the forsaken. Most people also don't really give a shit about the lore and just loved the raid content and class design.
3
u/MrRobotanist Jan 16 '25
I think for some wow fans, it’s the play style that brings us back. I dont know how many games Ive played over the 20 years wow has been out that I wish it played like wow.

u/niall_9 Jan 15 '25
That timeline ain’t resetting for a while. Maybe legion they’ll call it idk.

Well TIL anniversary classic has dual spec.
Does it have free respecs though?
3
u/thedeadz0ne Jan 15 '25
I was wondering about how respecs work with dual spec... does it reset both specs or just one?
6
u/BigBoyJeb Jan 15 '25
Just respecs whichever spec you’ve got active at the time, second spec isn’t touched. Cost goes up the same way as before
→ More replies (1)2
u/neverforgetreddit Jan 15 '25
In sod it just resets the spec you walked up with if I remember correctly.

What else do people expect for cata...?

u/shenananaginss Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 16 '25
I cannot overstate how nice dual spec is.
I wish they would have gave pallies a taunt and made buffs cost less mana though. Maybe added mage table and summoning stones.
Edit: people who think this is asking for sod are beyond dumb. There is a massive difference in asking to fix whats broken versus adding new content.
→ More replies (3)12
u/Smooth_One Jan 15 '25
Maybe a couple level-up raids like BFD and Gnomer would've been cool. Oh and there isn't much PvP – what if they added an event in Ashenvale? And not enough people are tanking either, it'd be nice if other classes like Warlocks and Rogues could tank.
Hey wait a minute
10
u/Skore_Smogon Jan 15 '25
LOL I am so chuckling over how many iterations of this comment I've seen.
How so many people ask for 'just one thing it would be nice to have' for their favorite class not realising that if Blizzard added up everyone's 'just one thing' you end up with SoD.

Cata is filled with bugs and has been since forever. Not that wrath wasn’t buggy as hell as well. Content patches were drawn out for way too long.
It slowly killed the interest in the game during wrath and continued into cata.
4
u/Heatinmyharbl Jan 16 '25
Yeah I mean the most supported version of WoW in retail is still dealing with a shit ton of bugs in TWW s1 too
This is just what blizzard servers WoW is at this point

→ More replies (3)24
u/Skore_Smogon Jan 15 '25
It really is.
They made Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj a raid that people actively want to run.
Hard modes keep things interesting in every raid so far.
Dungeons stay relevant as people run them to gear offspecs and alts via Reals.
New content coming up with Kara Crypts, Naxx hardmodes.
Still more content teased that we haven't had any inkling about yet (Scarlet Raid in P8?)
SoD is going strong.

Im interested in playing SOD, but is it too late to start now since they are on the last phase?
I play with some family members and we are very casual, so would probably level pretty slow, if that helps answer the question. There is 5 of us so we could run dungeons, is there anything special SOD added to 5 mans? Thanks!
3
u/antariusz Jan 16 '25
If you just want to enjoy wotlk style classes with the old vanilla world, sure, you can try it out, all the runes are available at level 1. There is no more “discovery” but there still is a very good game underneath. If you enjoy tbc/wotlk style classes, then sod is the best/only way to experience that currently.
If you want to raid, you can do that too, you can get a raid worthy character very easily now you can get 4pc t2 and 4pc t1 before you even set foot in a raid, that makes for a really powerful character for anything you’d want to do dungeon-wise or open world.

u/Mister_Yi Jan 16 '25 edited Jan 16 '25
Honestly sod is probably the perfect version for a family friendly group adventure.
XP gains are increased 150% and they recently changed it so you can buy all the runes at level 1 from the beginning. You guys can jump in and be doing rfc in like 2 hours of casual leveling.
Also with the runes, classes are very strong so if at least one person in you group is experienced you won't really have any problems doing whatever content you want. A single person can mostly carry with how strong the classes are.
In terms of general 5 man changes in sod there's a new high level dungeon, demon fall canyon. You'll unlock it later in the 50s from a short quest. We're also getting another dungeon sometime in the nearish? future, karazhan crypts.
Also most loot was updated/reworked so dungeon drops are lot more interesting. Almost forgot that high level dungeon bosses and raids drop a currency called tarnished undermine reals which can be exchanged at a vendor for gear and goodies (they even just added full tier 1 and half of tier 2 to the vendor so yall can be raid geared without ever touching a raid).
If you're up to the challenge you can even join/make a group for one of the level up raids like BFD, which is a very casual 10 man raid at lvl 25 that I'm pretty confident your 5 man family group could progress with some help; people were 5 manning when it was current content. High levels even come sometimes to stomp them for the hell of it.

u/cpttucker126 Jan 15 '25
I mean Cata only has Dragonsoul left which is its final phase. We'll get 3 new dungeons and the raid. After that its just MoP waiting room. At this point put in the pre-nerfed FL get dragonsoul out soon and blizz should get ready for the MoP release. Then after a phase or two in MoP get TBC ready on the anniversary realms.

16
u/Sorrowful_Panda Jan 16 '25
Cata still has the biggest endgame playerbase(most raiders) even with pretty botched expansion, so Blizz would be dumb to stop it.
Blizz actually did a lot more changes and general updates during Wrath but ditched Cata to work on SOD it felt like. Accelerated cadence did not happen t11 was waaay too long and dragon soul ptr should have been out already way more bugs and issues they never fix
26
u/Heatinmyharbl Jan 15 '25
I actually agree but Firelands has been a ton of fun and I'm looking forward to Mists so I'm glad they didn't listen to people like us lol

2
u/archaeas Jan 15 '25
Demo is the ultimate micro/macro build/purge spec in mop, based around burst windows. Meta becomes like cat form instead of a major cd. It’s fueled by a second mana bar called “demonic power” that’s built with regular spells and spent while casting spells in meta. It becomes extremely mobile as well because meta changes your spells. It’s insane.

15
u/Yawanoc Jan 15 '25
I think progressing through the expansions until they lose steam is the right play tbh. My wife didn't get into WoW until BFA, and even though neither of us are interested in keeping pace with the rereleases, it's been nice to pop in with friends sometimes and mess around with the game in different sandboxes.
20
2
u/Talidel Jan 15 '25
I honestly think they should just have rolling fresh servers for Vanilla to Wotlk, and then Cata onwards just have their own fresh servers in a rotation.
2
u/Yawanoc Jan 15 '25
I think that would be excellent if they could also streamline the leveling to just be the newer post-Cata content. I’d unironically play that if I could level without needing to detour through Outlands/Northrend on each and every character.

I'm enjoying raiding with my guild and doing the raids/content I skipped way back when. However, my guild has definitely struggled this xpac keeping players invested. We're very much hoping MoP brings back some more excitement. I loved MoP and am looking forward to raiding this time around because I pretty much only did pvp the first time with a little raiding sprinkled in just to get the cloak.

As someone who plays cata classic, I don't think it was the wrong move. I personally would have stopped playing if wrath classic dead ended and stayed at ICC forever or just plain ended. I can see why original cata was widely panned and even the accelerated release of cata classic didn't fix the fact that "phase 2" was a god damn nothingburger. But T11 was decent and Firelands has been fun while ICC did not remotely live up to the hype people had for it. Given time to reflect, I'd even consider it the worst raid in wrath, and that's really saying something given TOGC is in there.

u/Bio-Grad Jan 15 '25
I actually liked Cata Classic more than Wrath, and 5 years ago I would have bet you $100 the opposite would be true.
That said, I bounced off of both a few months in and am currently playing Anniversary vanilla.

u/Harrycrapper Jan 16 '25
That is kinda funny cus that means you missed what are arguably the better raids out of both expansions, being Ulduar and Firelands.

u/Roguste Jan 15 '25
Yeah most people end game or alts are getting boosts in dungeons.
But once you get to 60 UBRS runs going constantly, tons of pugs for all raids. And the reals currency keeps all the dungeons relevant and active.
Between old phase raids and incursions you can get 2-3 free levels on those two things alone. Changes the levelling patterns
2
u/Yawanoc Jan 15 '25
Using reals as bad luck protection for T0 sets was peak Classic for me. My guildies and I were expecting to burn out on like Scholomance runs for gear in between raids, but when we saw that the philosophy was now "just do whatever - go play the game" we ended up enjoying that part of 60 so much more.
Not sure I'd want them to stick around as a way to bypass getting T1 or T2 loot :P but this is something I would definitely love to see return in some form in the future.

I think SoD is the secret love project actually. It’s in such a good place. Classic fresh is fun and all but something about it also is just, kind of meh. Like, you can only do the whole classic #nochanges so many times.
11
u/whirling_cynic Jan 15 '25
Cata is what it is supposed to be. Literally a 15 year old expansion. What do you expect from the rerelease of an old expansion?
4
u/GetOwnedNerdhehe Jan 16 '25
Bug fixes and the same level of care they gave Wrath.
3
u/whirling_cynic Jan 16 '25

10
u/GetOwnedNerdhehe Jan 16 '25 edited Jan 16 '25
They actively balanced classes during wrath, invented the Beta dungeon system with new mechanics and not having progress halting bugs in the legendary questline
Edit: lmao as if this upset you enough to downvote hahaha
2
u/Gillig4n Jan 16 '25
Class balance is totally fine in cata though (in pve at least). Sure you could make a few small adjustments like slightly buffing SP, but every class see play. Bug on DTR? Volcanus was fixed, I'm not aware of another big one.
But they indeed got giga lazy for inferno protocol.

How is this meme getting upvoted. It’s not even true. I’m willing to bet most resources at blizzard get spend on all the new stuff added into SoD. Classic fresh is just a rerelease with dual spec(awesome!!), no debuff cap(amazing!) and some sort of group finder that no one really uses. Both are being played by quite a large amount of players. Cataclysm I don’t really know, I feel it’s just not really popular since most players just enjoy classic up to wotlk.

Pandaria was actually a very good gameplay expansion and the fall off of players was more of a meta understanding that blizzard had run out of original ideas and franchises like league/dota2 were popping off at the time.

2
u/neettransgirl Jan 16 '25
Huh? SoD is getting Karazhan crypts in a few weeks and a Scarlet Crusade raid is in development. Also they put a lot of work into the recent AQ patch with a bunch of new bug mounts and tons of new crafting recipes / enchants.
2
u/techniscalepainting Jan 16 '25
Which is weird cos cataclysm has the highest (non retail) player count
2
u/TelevisionPositive74 Jan 16 '25
Honestly, from what I can tell, Cata is currently more active then Wrath was during ICC. Depends on the server I guess but cmon, there's like one populated server per faction/region. Just general pop in towns, the amount of posts in trade/LFG, tokens cost 21k (Benediction) they dropped down to as low as 5k at some point during ICC.
Its still probably the least popular version of the game rn, but its still going better then what I would have expected (I 100% though Wrath would be massively more popular, but it looks like Wrath retention was trash compared to Cata so far. And we are like 10 weeks into Firelands).

That's because it's Cataclysm. People can still walk around on this map. And most who quit the game seem to agree that Wrath was the absolute peak, everything after was downhill.
Now my personal favourites are Legion, TBC and Classic, but that's me being a TBC kid. I grew up with a warglaive in my mouth. Shit hurts, I tell ya.
1
u/oddntt Jan 15 '25 edited Jan 15 '25
And if they make another classic fresh I'll drop whatever I'm playing to play that too. Wow classic is like a doom clock to microtransactions, power creep, and an evolution from players into Skinner's pigeons via never-ending dailies that make you feel like you lost something by not participating in mundane tasks. I like to reset that clock as often as I can. I don't care about content changes as much as I do practice and policy changes that are reflected, first in tbc, and much more so in later xpacs. TL;DR Drown please, the servers need room for real games.

I am the GM of a semi HC cata raiding guild that has had firelands on farm for over a month now. We are on like week 9 of firelands, and just came out of a two week holiday season where Christmas and new years interfered with Tuesday/Wednesday raid schedules. Nobody is complaining. Nobody is burnt out. We are expecting a normal 16 week phase before dragon soul comes out. What are you expecting blizzard to do? Add a circus and movie theaters?
