I think I recall that the one time Pinky was in charge, they actually succeeded

402

u/hazps 2d ago

"One is a genius, the other's insane" never specified which was which. It is possible that we were misinterpreting their roles all along.

u/AndyLorentz 2d ago

That is a popular fan theory.

48

u/thefatheadedone 2d ago

One of my favourite theories.

2

u/Capable-Assistance88 21h ago

Smart people generally underestimate their own abilities. Because they want to understand all sides of a situation first. Their hesitation can come across as being slower than others. At least that’s what I heard.

15

u/CT_4269 2d ago

Unfortunately, the creators said this to be false

54

u/MegaMonkeyMadness 2d ago

One of the worst things a creator can do is shoot down fan theories. They generate discourse around their work and lets them leave it open to interpretation - like when that one BioWare dev shot down the ME3 indoctrination theory.

The guy that wrote My Life As A Teenage Robot did it classy. When trans people started reading into Jenny's experiences, he was quick to go, "I wasn't even thinking of that, but good for you, I like the idea!"

23

u/SmokePenisEveryday 2d ago

Honestly that has to be one of the highest compliments to a writer. Knowing a demographic you weren't necessarily considering during the writing could latch onto it in a impactful way.

u/joe_broke 2d ago

The exceptions to this are the ones that are blatantly against what's shown in canon

For example, using Hazbin Hotel:

Alastor will not go against Charlie and the Hotel and become an antagonist

Bitches please, what part of Alastors's section of the finale told you he's going to stay on Charlie's side? He even used Disney Villain Green™!

Or, hear me out: Opinions are nice, but facts are facts, and as an artist, they wanted to create something specific, send a specific message.

"The dude who knows best ruined our idiocy" really isn't a strong argument. You can theorize about other stuff (in universe), too.

Theories always have the goal to uncover the truth.

If you choose to theorize despite knowing that it's wrong, that's just idiocy.

u/AndyLorentz 1d ago

1

u/WhatDoesOneKnow 1d ago

This doesn't apply. Thank you for proving my point (regarding idiocy).

Of course it's stupid to argue WHAT the inventor might have meant. You will never truly know.

It's something COMPLETELY different when the author is alive and tells you that you're stupid and that it's not what he meant. There is no room for interpretation here. The author fucking told you.

In case of the latter, you are choosing to induldge in human ignorance, disregarding the truth and choosing to make up your own.

That's the problem with you people. You can have opinions, but you can't expect every opinion to be valid. Not when you close your eyes in front of facts. Opinions are not truths. At least not all and not neccessarily.

u/Dudewhocares3 1d ago

Ultimate Spider-Man did not occur in one year. I don’t care what the author said.

Peter Parker did not do all of that shit plus ultimatum in one year. Even if that was everything he did and nothing happened off panel. So much shit happened in that book

0

u/WhatDoesOneKnow 1d ago

I would try to understand what you meant with that, but you're a marvel fan, so it would actually be impossible to find anything rational in your thoughts

Also, "I don't care" means simply that - you choosing ignorance and stupidity. Kinda pathetic

like when that one BioWare dev shot down the ME3 indoctrination theory.

In fairness, that was a particularly dumb theory.

Death of the Author

1

u/JessyKenning 2d ago

This is a fan theory? I always thought Pinky was the genius?

74

u/Am_Snarky 2d ago

Though they never specify, they give hints, the definition of insanity is repeated action with expectations of different results, The Brain tries and fails to take over the world constantly.

Also Pinky can read and The Brain cannot

21

u/LegOfLambda 2d ago

In no way is that the definition of insanity but sure

35

u/mtdunca 2d ago

It's a very famous quote, possibly from Alcoholics Anonymous.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."

14

u/TOASTisawesome 2d ago

Here I was thinking Einstein said it lmao

5

u/MegaMonkeyMadness 2d ago

Nah it's from that guy in Far Cry 3

1

u/RedSonGamble 1d ago

Honestly it’s where I heard it from

3

u/LegOfLambda 2d ago

Right but this guy is saying it as if it’s fact

12

u/JamesTrickington303 2d ago

No he’s saying it as if his readers will understand the common colloquialism, which most everyone did.

3

u/Strange-Bluebird871 2d ago

It’s a children’s tv show that ended over 25 years ago, think most of us are just having a bit of fun

2

u/rikkian 2d ago

The most recent series was 2023. deffo didnt "end" 25 years ago. Hell Trump even makes an appearance in one of the new episodes.

0

u/Strange-Bluebird871 2d ago

Genuine looking for evidence of this to be true. I’m seeing they were featured in the animatics reboot but can’t find their own series as you claim exists.

1

u/alinroc 2d ago

If you think Animaniacs/Pinky and the Brain was "a children's show", you should probably re-watch it and look at all the adult humor they snuck in.

1

u/Strange-Bluebird871 2d ago

Ok doesn’t make it not a children’s show. One of my favorite shows of all time is the last airbender which contains incredibly adult themes. It’s also still a children’s show.

2

u/LegOfLambda 2d ago

I understood the reference but it’s really stupid. It’s not just an analogy… OP was taking it literally to say that Brain was insane.

8

u/EnoughWarning666 2d ago

Yes, it's a literary tool. That's the common saying, so an author can use that shared common knowledge to provide information about the character without being overly blunt and boring.

5

u/insaneHoshi 2d ago

I understood the reference but it’s really stupid

Says the pedant

2

u/JamesTrickington303 2d ago

And I’m certain the writers of the show would say they specifically intended to create doubt as to which one is actually smart and which one is actually crazy.

If you watch the show, Brain says lots of technically correct things but Pinky is the one actually imparting wisdom. The notion that this interplay is a coincidence and not intentional writing is basically calling Spielberg a fuckin moron, which I disagree with.

2

u/Godd2 2d ago

OP was taking it literally to say that Brain was insane.

It's a cartoon. Brain isn't literally anything.

1

u/determania 2d ago

It is famous, but also wrong.

8

u/MetternichMarck 2d ago

In pop culture, it is; and Pinky and the Brain is often referencing pop culture.

2

u/Umarill 2d ago

It's not but since it's a popular saying in pop culture, people repeat it as fact.

1

u/whita_019 2d ago

Me rolling dice: they should put me in an asylum

1

u/Gone_For_Lunch 2d ago

Yea, first time someone told me that I thought they were bullshitting me, so I shot them.

6

u/Meanderer_Me 2d ago

When is it ever expressed that The Brain cannot read? Don't most of his plans involve reading vast reams of information about humanity to know how to navigate their world?

1

u/Kazeite 1d ago

Maybe not "can't read", but in one episode, when they were taking part in a quiz show, Brain (unlike Pinky) could barely spell his name.

1

u/Am_Snarky 19h ago

Pinky reads a newspaper headline and Brain exclaims “you can read?” or “wait you understand that?” something along those lines, I haven’t seen the show in decades though so it’s a little fuzzy

1

u/Meanderer_Me 19h ago

The Brain reads a letter to Santa

This scene can't happen if The Brain can't read. There are numerous other scenes where he's reading technical documents and newspaper clippings and the like for his plans, but this is the first one I happened across.

With regards to Brain being surprised that Pinky can read, this is less shock at the ability existing than it is that Pinky is doing something that he doesn't expect Pinky to be able to do. Which doesn't look that different, as Pinky has telekinesis - an ability that Brain doesn't - and Brain notices it, asks about it, and then continues on with his plan once Pinky gives his answer. That is, it's not that Brain is surprised that Pinky can do things that Brain can't, it's that Brain rarely pays proper attention to Pinky, and is surprised that Pinky can do things besides say "narf" at all.

23

u/ShrimplingX 2d ago

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

"What are we going to do tonight, Brain?" "The same thing we do every night, Pinky...try to take over the world!"

10

u/notfree25 2d ago

He isn't doing the same thing over and over again to reach different results, he is doing many different things to try to reach the one result.

5

u/JamesTrickington303 2d ago

I’m sure that was brought up in the writer’s room when they were writing the first season and whoever said it was fired so the rest of them could write a decent television show for us to enjoy.

1

u/notfree25 1d ago

there wouldnt be a show if he does the same thing over and over again.

Forcefully using a something incorrectly to fit your narrative would be closer to insanity, but i suppose thats convenient and common these day.

1

u/JamesTrickington303 1d ago

Bruh you didn’t pick up on their lyrics making this plausible when you were a kid? Were you even watching?

3

u/24675335778654665566 2d ago

That's not the definition of insanity, it's just a pop culture quote

1

u/Urbanviking1 2d ago

What if they are both geniuses but one is also insane? They are both lab rats part of an experiment to make them smart, it would make sense that one is a control baseline genius while the other becomes insane.

1

u/PromiscuousMNcpl 2d ago

There was an episode where Pinky is revealed to the the smart one just playing with Brain to keep him happy.

1

u/GGXImposter 1d ago

While it never specified, it’s normal to keep the order. So Pinky & Genius would be paired together.

It’s also insane to believe that even a genetically modified mouse could take over the world. Which Brain is convinced he is able to achieve that goal.

29

u/Karn-Dethahal 2d ago

I remember the Christmas episode where they actually succeed, but the moment Brain will send the message to control everyone he just read Pink's Santa letter and just wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, proving he actually has a heart and is capable of empathy. So yeah, Brain in charge might be an improvement right now.

27

u/Wild_Marker 2d ago

Also part of Brain's motivation was "I can probably rule the place better" and his metrics for "better" were rather good compared to your average politician.

15

u/DangerZoneh 2d ago

It’s like how Dr Doom is a villain who wants to control the world but every time he gets in charge, he basically creates a utopia. Like yeah, he took the world by force and is basically king, but the public healthcare, education, and infrastructure has gotten REALLY good

6

u/Ehcksit 2d ago

Dr Doom is a villain because he violently opposes Mr Fantastic, not because he's actually a bad guy.

11

u/pornwing2024 2d ago

He's an actual bad guy too.

10

u/Ehcksit 2d ago

Anti-Latverian propaganda.

1

u/alinroc 2d ago

And I say, Zangief, you are bad guy, but this does not mean you are 'bad' guy.

1

u/DigitalBlackout 2d ago

And all the slavery and killing and what not, but y'know, it's hating Mr. Fantastic that's the real crime.

19

u/EudamonPrime 2d ago

Yes. Pinky just asked very nicely.

11

u/clarkision 2d ago

At least until Brain stepped in. Pinky set up an oyster farm and then through a few more steps, was given a cabinet position by Bill Clinton.

4

u/mandelbratwurst 2d ago

I’m 95% sure the episode was called “Pinky’s Turn”

6

u/Long-Potential2603 2d ago

All thanks to the shinny pants

1

u/sassy_cheddar 1d ago

I will gladly don my shiny pants and welcome the comparative integrity of my mousey overlords.

1

u/AnikiRabbit 2d ago

From mayor of the small town of Shiny Pants all the way to the top!

1

u/sushishibe 1d ago

Something something something… pinky’s actually the smart one.
