Shout-out to Chandler Smith and BKG

I know that we can sometimes focus on the bad things going on in the space, especially recently. However, one of the best things in the sport is the people, and I had the pleasure of spending a bit of time with Chandler Smith and Björgvin Guðmundsson (BKG) as they were competing at ATHX Glasgow this weekend (great comp by the way). Whilst they were both a privilege to watch compete as they are both incredible competitors/athletes, more importantly they were both real gentlemen that were generous with their time and experience, and couldn't have been more accomodating to the fans/staff/other competitors. Real gents through and through.

Well... I'm feeling lost.

Heeeeey,

So I’ve been thinking (okay, procrastinating) about trying CrossFit for the first time. I’m 34F, working full time, and haven’t been consistent with fitness the past couple of years.

I’m not totally out of shape, but definitely not CrossFit strong either lol. It’s always seemed a little intense and intimidating, which is why I’ve held off. I’ve only done regular gyms before ,and those just didn’t work for me. I never felt supported or motivated enough to stick with it.

Now I’ve found 3 different CrossFit gyms in my city, and they each have intro offers that actually sound pretty good. I just don’t know which one would be the best fit for someone like me (kinda nervous, definitely a beginner, hoping not to feel lost or judged).

Here’s what they’re offering:

1. Yuba City Crossfit

  • 3 private beginner sessions
  • 2 weeks of classes
  • No contract
  • 15% off if you stay

2. Classfieldfit

  • 7-day free trial
  • 1 coaching session
  • Beginner-friendly classes
  • 15% off first month

3. CrossFit Gold Rush

  • 7 days unlimited access
  • 2 coaching sessions
  • Full use of their gym tech
  • 15% off if you join

If you’ve been in my shoes, which one would you go with?

Thaaaanks in advance!

PS: they are all between 10 min to 8 closer to my house

Sandbag questions

Those who have filled sandbags (firstly, bless your souls because it’s one of the most miserable things I’ve done) I have some questions.

I recently filled my Rogue 150 to exactly 150lbs using play sand . But it is much more firm than other bags I’ve used. Not as floppy. Would I have been better off filling a 200 to 150 and leaving it floppier? Or have I made the correct decision? It says that the fabric will stretch, but I’m not sure how much to factor that in.

Are most sandbags floppier simply because of how much a pain in the backside it is to fill these to capacity?

Asking those before I decide how to fill my 100 bag and if I should get more. Cheers in advance!

Semis Surprises

70M Here

I feared the snatches - just 10 below my 1RM. My form wasn't great - lots of pressing to finsh, but I did! All 30 of the dang things!

I thought the lunges would go better. Two huge no-reps. Hard to keep holding that thing up. Will redo tomorrow.

The cleans + CTB were a hoot. Made fast work of getting blocked by BMU. Next year>:)

What were your surprises?

I Need Some Serious Advices - Going back to Crossfit classes after an injury and a 3 month break.

Hello folks,

I need you guys to understand my situation and help me find the right direction because I believe it’s a bit complicated. I would like to get advice from all of you and try to put it all into practice from now on.

I’m 26 years old, my height is 173 cm, and my current weight is 63 kg. I started CrossFit about a year ago (with 3 sessions of 1.5 hours per week), and at that time, I was very untrained and barely active. In the beginning, I started to gain some muscle (note that I was eating about 2000 calories each day; I can’t remember the exact amount of carbs, but I think my protein intake was about 230 grams per day). However, at the same time, I started gaining fat, mostly around my belly, which was unpleasant. I also wasn’t developing strength, which was frustrating.

Then, I had a body analysis, and it turned out my body fat was 19.0%. This trend continued for another month, and in the next body analysis, my body fat increased to 19.7%. By this point, I was in my 4th month of CrossFit training. After doing some research, I decided to cut my calories to about 1500 (including 150 grams of carbs, 150 grams of protein, and 70 grams of fat) and add a bit of cardio to my regular CrossFit training to lose the fat. The most accessible form of cardio for me was my indoor bike, so I decided to do at least 3 to 5 additional hours of cardio each week.

During this period, I was noticeably weaker than before, meaning I couldn’t lift the same weights as I had been, which made my CrossFit sessions a bit harder. At the same time, I suffered a minor injury, so I stopped the new routine after 10 days and took a long break, then gave it another go for another 3 weeks. In my next body analysis, the result showed I had lost about 2 kg of fat, but I also lost 2 kg of muscle (which is still a mystery to me—how I lost that muscle).

Afterr this, I continued my workouts, but during this period, I faced a few small misfortunes. For example, I had a minor accident and got sick a few times. One of the times I was sick and felt like I had a cold, I stopped my training for 10 days. After 10 days, I returned to training. However, during that workout, after being sick for 10 days, a bad incident happened. I fell off the pull-up bar. I was swinging, and towards the end of the session, I tried to perform the "toes to bar" exercise. My hand slipped off the pull-up bar, and my head violently hit the wall from behind. I was unconscious for a few seconds and was quickly taken to the hospital.

After medical examinations, fortunately, I didn’t suffer any serious injury, but my head and neck were in severe pain, and they had to stitch up the back of my head. I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t move, and for about two weeks, I just lay in bed watching YouTube. This was the point where fear and despair started creeping into my fitness journey. The fear, which is understandable, and the despair, wondering why after all this training, I still didn’t have enough strength to perform the exercises.

After about two weeks, I resumed my training and followed the class program until I had to stop my workouts for 3 months to focus on my academic career. Now, after 3 months, I plan to start again tomorrow.

The main reason I’m writing this is that I have several goals with my workouts. One is that I have always been overweight until I tried to lose fat by eating less, and now I want to maintain an ideal body composition. The second is that I want to have a healthy body, meaning I want to be able to do various activities, like playing football, and my body should be capable of handling them. The third is that I feel like I’m too skinny right now and don’t have enough muscle, so I want to gain muscle. In short, I think my goals can be summarized in three words: getting fit, getting stronger, and getting more muscular.

Now, is there anyone here who can tell me what kind of nutrition I should follow with a regular class program, or what additional exercises I should do to reach these three main goals? Is this goal realistic?

I appreciate your attention in advance.

Weightlifting and CrossFit

Anyone do weightlifting/crossfit splits? I was thinking of doing back, chest and legs Saturday, Monday, & Wednesday then doing CrossFit Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Reasoning is that my lunch break is set from 12-1pm and I typically hate cardio, but I’ve done CrossFit before and find the cardio/conditioning more tolerable🤷🏾‍♂️ plus I rarely train cardio and abs so it’s needed😮‍💨

Mid 40s CF male minor injuries

46 year old CF male, been doing this for about 10 years. Every few months a new little ailment shows up. Most recent is the ball of my right foot aches after double-unders. Prior to that my left arch hurts after longer runs. Both injuries are still there but they don’t seem to be getting worse. Is this what I should expect moving forward?

What to tell coaches when scaling through uncertain medical stuff

I’m going through some intense medical / immune stuff - so this isn’t a usual “scale for injury” - I genuinely do not know what I can do right now. I do know that I wanna keep showing up at the gym every day - it’s helpful for me mentally more than anything.

Basically both my body is acting insanely weird, AND psychologically I feel wrecked like I don’t know how/where I can push right now. It’s really fucking hard. I’ve just started a treatment - I think it’s helping but it’s also got brutal side effects. I kind of want my coaches to know I’m going through something, without sharing TMI with them - both for the encouragement and also so they can help me scale so I can at least maybe feel like I can push.

Coaches out there - is this enough info to share? These aren’t new coaches - I train w them every day and have done for a year. Is it too much? What would you wanna know to coach an athlete through this?

Others athletes there - how have you handled it, not specifically with coaches but the combo mental/physical part of CrossFit with weird medical shit that isn’t a regular injury?

I ordered new tanks and got then today to realize they aren't the same size at all. 3 tanks, 3 different sizes. So I'm moving on. Anyone have some suggestions on similar feeling tanks that are roughly the same price?

Moving to Prospect Lefferts Gardens, Brooklyn — any gyms with group classes nearby?

Hey all! I’m moving to Prospect Lefferts Gardens in mid-April and looking to find a new gym home. I’ve been doing CrossFit regularly since 2018 and love the group workout vibe—structured classes, being told what to do, and sweating it out with other people.

Unfortunately, I’m not seeing any CrossFit boxes within walking distance of my new place. The only nearby options that keep coming up are Planet Fitness and Crunch, and neither really offers the type of group classes I’m used to (or at least not in the same way).

I’d strongly prefer group classes over personal training (both for the social side and to save money), but I’m open to chatting if personal training is the only option. Just trying to avoid working out alone if I can help it—I know I won't stick with it otherwise 😅

Does anyone know of a gym nearby that offers solid group classes—whether it’s functional fitness, bootcamp-style, or something else structured and challenging? Open to suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

CrossFit specific PT or general?

Just looking for some advice re personal trainers and CrossFit

So I have been going to CrossFit sporadically since December. I really enjoy it for the most part but I find it very difficult to get in - I’m autistic and rely on certain people being in the class who have been giving me a bit of extra explanation with some moves or I can’t do it. Sometimes the classes are very busy and obviously loud so I don’t always know what I’m doing and the instructor isn’t really in depth enough for me to be confident. That leads me to often dropping out of the classes and not going if I see moves, for example, on the rig when I know I won’t have enough time to figure out what I’m supposed to be doing and where as it is so busy. There’s a lot of ‘give it a go and see’ when it comes to weight and that doesn’t work for me. I’m such an anxious person.

I’ve been thinking about getting a PT to help with this so I’m not trying to do new things for the first time in such an overwhelming environment. The wods where I know how to do things are fine. I’ve had ‘normal’ PTs before but would I need one that is familiar with CrossFit in order to achieve what I want?
