I think the way they sold the first model year of this thing was wild. The general public was initially only given access to the RST. The only other models, 3WT and 4WT were reserved to fleet purchases. There was no LT on offer. The biggest fleet purchasers seemed to be Hertz, who ended up getting rid of a lot of their EV fleet in general. A lot of Teslas went up as well.
I'm super happy with my 3wt, but a lot of that happiness stems from the price I was able to get. The $75k sticker was a huge ask for this vehicle. I have no idea what fleet pricing looked like but I have to imagine it was way way cheaper.
I suspect that EV uncertainty in the US with this admin (without getting too political) plays a role in individual and business willingness to invest in these products too. and even with current discounts, they're aren't exactly cheap.
I am personally hoping to monetize vehicle to grid on my truck. I also needed something to tow my smoker, so it made sense to go this route. There are some competitive prices with Ford happening right now is too though. The numbers just made more sense on the Chevy because of tow rating and battery capacity.
I really like the battery range. I'm thinking about biting on one, but I'm being cautious due to the price tag. How do cold temps affect your range, and how much does towing your smoker impact your range?
I've only had the truck for one month. Just hit 1000 miles today taking the kids to their basketball games. I haven't had experience with this vehicle in the actual cold yet. It's starting to warm up now, and the worst I've driven in was maybe 45°; not cold enough for a fair shake.
The smoker has only needed to go about five miles thus far, so it's also not a fair comparison. From the research I've done you should expect range to be cut in half.
Right now the truck says my lifetime mi/kWh rating is 2.3. I went in expecting 2.0, so I'm pleased with those numbers. Obviously towing will affect that and I will get a lot more experience with that this coming summer.
What did you not like about it that you felt the Lightning did better?
I was initially looking at a Lightning. The price just didn't make sense with the max tow package, and it still trailed the Silverado by 1250 pounds. Aesthetically I think I prefer the Lightning. And if 7k tow rating is sufficient, there are some monster deals to be had, albeit with lesser range.
Yeah, I couldn't find anything with the max tow package that had inventory discounts like the 2024 flash ER's did. And since you can't add max tow package after the fact, that was a non starter.
yeah, it can definitely take some hunting to find just the right one. I was specifically looking for an XLT SR, Max Tow, with Pro Power 9.6 and it took a while...found it eventually though :)
