MOD POST r/firstaid is seeking additional moderators

This subreddit has been growing steadily over the past year, and we are now at a point where I could use an additional active moderator or two to assist with growing the sub and ensuring it maintains high quality content. Specifically, I'm looking for mods who can assist with both moderation tasks and posting fresh weekly topics, FAQs, PSAs, and the like to encourage active discussion and spread vetted medical information.

Requirements for candidacy:

  • You must be a licensed/registered medical provider with enough relevant work experience to counter disinformation and improper medical advice. If you hold current provider flair, the first part of this requirement is satisfied already. Unflaired medical providers may submit a redacted copy of their medical license or registration issued by a governmental medical authority to modmail.
  • You must be active on this or other related subs with a history of well-worded and informed responses. If you have no history in the past 6 months of actively being involved on other medically related subs, please do not apply.
  • Previous/current moderation experience is a large bonus and will set you apart from other candidates.
  • Possess no inflammatory, racist, or hate-filled comments or posts on their account. This will be verified with Reddit historical archives, so don't bother deleting comments to try and pass this threshold.

Interested persons should send a message to modmail listing their licensure level with redacted credentials if not already flaired, details on their relevant medical work experience, and reasonably expected moderation availability and moderator action frequency for the next 6-12 months.

Thank you in advance to all the interested persons who may apply!

MOD POST Information about medical advice here at r/FirstAid

This subreddit can be a great resource in helping to unburden an already heavily burdened medical system. Users often come here to enquire whether or not their injuries require medical attention, and our userbase is normally very helpful in supporting and answering them. Please keep in mind though:

All medical related answers here are OPINIONS--some from laymen, some from flaired medical professionals. Either way, please use your own best judgement and seek treatment if you believe you need it.

Even if a comment is from a flaired medical professional, they are not able to diagnose and prescribe treatments over the internet. This is simply because they do not have all the information; no matter how detailed you post may be. Anyone who claims otherwise goes against Rule 6.

That said, many users post about their ailments and are informed that time and basic care is all that is needed. This is a fantastic resource for someone who might otherwise have shown up to Emergency just to be sent home. Please just be judicial in your acceptance of medical advice and if in doubt, seek qualified medical treatment.

Additionally:

If anyone ever needs support or is feeling hopeless and like they have no other alternatives, the Suicide Prevention Hotline is available for free 24/7 at 800-273-8255 in the US. Just DM me for other countries' numbers if you reside elsewhere.

Further, If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233 in the US. Again, DM me for international numbers. You are not alone.

Seeking Opinion On Injury Is this healing properly? Any advice on how to avoid the adhesive irritation? NSFW

As title asks, is it healing properly? Also, how long should I keep this covered? And how often should I change it? First two photos were the day of the burn, others were taken over the past week and a half. The last photo is an example of how I’ve had it covered. I’ve been using silvex, hydra bandages, and medical adhesive tape. The tape is beginning to eat into my skin.

Seeking Opinion On Injury Burn Blister Popped NSFW

I spilled boiling water on the top of my foot a little over a week ago and the major blister that formed has popped. The skin is completely raw and I don’t know how to take care of this. I lost my health insurance last Friday so I can’t really afford urgent care.

Hi! Soo enormous burn from an oil splash on my arm, thanks to me being an idiot making salmon. The drippy look is authentic to the shape of the splash…does it look infected? It’s been a week, I keep it wrapped almost always and clean is as well as add a touch lbacgerial neosporin, a burn cream, bacetracin and aquafore. I’m worried about the yellow spots but maybe that’s common?

Slipped in some mud and scraped my knee pretty bad Sunday night (it’s now Tuesday afternoon) Trying to see if this redness is part of the normal healing process for how hard I fell, or if I should go to urgent care?? Google has given my some conflicting information on whether or not this is normal or signs of infection

First photo is after 3 days of ABX (doxy), 2nd photo is after 4.5 days. Subcutaneous stitches got infected, started ABX 9 days after surgery to remove precancerous mole. Margins were unclear so I’m trying to heal it enough to have this re-done. It is right next to my spine so I’m really panicking.

Got nicked getting my nails done Friday. There’s slight redness around the area but no pain. I’ve been keeping it covered with antibacterial gel on. Should I go in to Urgent Care? It doesn’t seem to be getting much better but I also haven’t been looking at it much because it’s been covered

I’ve never had blisters before now so I’m unsure how it should look, I got it from walking a lot the past few days.

it did have a plaster on it for a day so the skin around is a little red

Seeking Opinion On Injury Bump On Left Middle Finger Injury? NSFW

The top of my left hand middle finger hit a spot nearing the ceiling. I took a picture of it of what I hit. I hit the part where it looked chipped right in the middle of that picture.

I then seem to notice that there seems to be a bump right above the middle phalanx of my left middle finger? I'm not sure the name of it but imagine closing your fist on the left hand and looking at the middle finger. I post 2 pictures on this below. When I touch the area, I notice how it feels harder than the same area in the other fingers. Is this normal? Now I do notice this similar spot on my other fingers on the left finger but for some reason but they are way smaller, none of my right fingers have any noticeable bump like this? When I bumped my left hand on the 1st picture, I believe I only bumped the middle finger of my left hand only and not the other fingers.

Does anyone know what this bump is? Did I break a bone? Or is it a bruise? In the last 2 pictures, you could notice how there is a noticeable bump? When I touch the same area in all my fingers, that spot on my left middle finger is the most noticeable. For some reason, there is barely any bump in that spot on my right hand fingers? It seems like a raised bone?

ER sent me home without even cleaning it and slapped a new bandage on it. Dermatologist not getting back to me. I’ve been on doxy for 4 days now. Am I gonna be okay just cleaning this regularly like the ER said? Until my follow up in a few days with derm?

I think the photos are in reverse chronological order. The surgery was 12 days ago. Still waiting on the swab culture the derm did on day 9. Im super freaked out!!!

TIA

basically i was out with friends last night and i fell pretty hard and my knee is fucked (i will attach a picture). i have scraped my knees before but this time it’s particularly painful — my knee overall aches when i stand too long and the wound itself feels almost like it’s burning. i washed it out last night with rubbing alcohol and covered it overnight but it like oozed through the bandaids. is this just how a severe scrape feels, or do i have to go to urgent care

My son burnt his hand. This photo was about 27 hours after the burn. It was the most swollen it’s been. Pain was intense day 1. Minimal day 2 in the AM but started to heat up again in the PM. First pic day 2. Second pic day 1.

Hey! I got a burn from hot glue on my arm on Thursday, is it looking okay or is it infected? It's still swollen and painful. I know it will be painful, but it's not so much on the burn itself but around it. There has been a yellow liquid the past couple days, which might just be plasma from my googling? I also burnt my finger at the same time and it looks much better, mostly just scarring and the only discoloration is where the burn itself was, not around the edges or anything.

On Monday (6 days ago), I tripped at a park and got my knee pretty bad. I thought I was doing a good job at cleaning it, but it's starting to look really red and the scab looks awful. What do you think? Here's a pick from Monday, and then today.
