OFFICIAL Weekly One Take - Get feedback on your improv! Week 52

The Concept

There are two ways you can participate in this thread, and they are not mutually exclusive!

  1. Record a take of yourself improvising over the backing track provided. The idea is not to achieve perfection - record a real, live, raw and unedited solo. It can be a video or just a recording. Upload your take to YouTube or Soundcloud and share it in the comments. Tip: keep your take short and sweet. If you record a 10 minute take, think about chopping it down and submitting just the first few minutes.
  2. Give feedback on someone else's take. We're looking for supportive, constructive comments - putting yourself out there for everyone to listen to is scary, and everyone is at a different stage in their guitar journey. Critiques are welcomed, but don't just criticise - offer suggestions on how to improve, and highlight the things you did like too.

This week’s track:

Highway Vibrations

If you have any feedback on the concept as a whole, please let me know in the comments/DM me.

OFFICIAL Official No Stupid Questions Thread - Winter 2025

Ahh yes! Feel that chill in the air? Feel those fret ends digging into your hands as you slide up and down the fretboard? If not, then you're in good shape. If you are experiencing some "shrinkage" due to low moisture, please follow my recommendations below:

Generally, the summer months in the Northern hemisphere require some dehumidification, while the winter months require the opposite (a humidifier). Let’s keep things super simple and economical. Get yourself a cheap hygrometer (around $10) and place it where you keep your guitar the most. Make sure that you maintain that space’s ambient conditions within the following range:

Humidity: 45-52%RH Temp: 68-75F

These ranges aren’t absolute. I actually prefer my guitars to be at 44-46%RH. They just sound better to my ears. They are drier and louder, but this is also getting dangerously close to being too dry. Use this info to help guide you through the drier months. These ranges will keep you safe anywhere on the planet as long as you carefully maintain the space at those levels.

As for other business, the current hot issue is Twitter/X links.

WE HAVE NEVER ALLOWED LINKS TO TWITTER/X, AND NEVER WILL.

It's got nothing to do with our absolute innate hatred of fascist nazi scumbags. It's just part of our policy for keeping this place free of social media links and spam from influencers, etc.

Now that that's out of the way, please use this post as you usually would, and that's to ask whatever guitar-related questions you have. The userbase here is one of the best and most informed in the world of guitar expertise (or at least they think they are ;)). Have a great winter guitar people! Stay warm, and keep those guitars well used and in a safe range for optimal use and longevity.

GEAR The Perfect Pick Exists

Post image
47 Upvotes

Seems like I finally found it! After using everything, including Blue Chips, I started using the green tortexes, learned about how a thicker pick can impact playing, gave the new reissue Adamas Graphite picks a try (which are essentially plastic with barely any graphite compared to originals Jerry played), those were great but slippery, even with Picker’s Grip applied, went back to green tortexes, cuz that material has amazing grip, then was recommended the thickest Gator Grips, pick nirvanna. The black Gator Grips have the best of both worlds, the thickness and control of the Adamas, and the feel of Tortex, in a slightly smaller shape, amazing picks. Two mm is the way with Gator’s.

Trying to repost my interactive fretboard app here. My previous post was removed because it was considered self-promotion. I don't think it is: I wrote this app for fun and because I personally needed such an app to visualize vasrious scale fingerings. I'n not interested in money or any other rewards. Just enjoy this tool, it is entirely free and will remain free forever.

I've always loved the iceman design and wanted to own one for years but always been better with the drums so couldn't really justify buying one, but my job has given me access to a 3d printer and I've had this neck for a few years now doing absolutely nothing so thought I'd make onej

Really really happy with the outcome :D

QUESTION Is there a problem with this?

Post image
48 Upvotes

Just replaced the strings on this guitar with bigsby with the same set, gauge and brand as before (Solez Strings), but I've noticed that they reduced the wound part and now the D string is looking like this.

Any problem with that? Will I have some trouble with this?

QUESTION Fixing a buzzing sound on a guitar

I run the audio at my church and our guitarist has an older guitar that he swears works fine. Whenever he is playing there is a buzzing sound. He won't let me or anyone try to take a look at it so I can't fix the root of the problem.

Would a gate set to the frequency of the buzzing sound take out the buzzing sound? I have been playing around with a gate and can't seem to get rid of the buzzing so I am considering adjusting the frequency it is targeting. Any advice on how to better get rid of the buzzing would be great.

For additional info. I have tested other guitars with the same set up so it's not any of the cables or other hardware. I am using a Behringer x thirty two for my mixing board. If there is a better place to ask this question please let me know. Thank you

QUESTION What is your biggest challenge with guitar? Do you have a technique to overcome it?

For me, I mostly focus on rhythm. The problem is sometimes my strumming hand is not totally coordinated - so I’ll miss beats or I’ll play too fast. I try to lean into this a little bit and just have a slightly goofy or awkward or uncoordinated sound, but I think overall it sounds ok. Do you have any challenges playing guitar? How do you mitigate them?

GEAR New To Guitar, Here’s What I Bought Today

Post image
45 Upvotes

I took some old studio gear I had laying around into Guitar Center today and was able to trade it in and walk out the store with this new Squire Stratocaster in the surf green color way. So far I’m loving it, I have it hooked up to a Fender Champion II amp. Who else has a squire and what are your thoughts on them in general?

QUESTION Between a Vox AV, and a Vox AD VT amp, which is the better one?

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

I’m looking to upgrade my amp, and I have a choice between a Vox AV fifteen, and a Vox AD thirty VT amp, both are tube amps. I can get the AV for around eighty dollars, and the ADVT for a hundred and forty. I’m not really aiming for any specific tone, just looking to get a better sounding amp than the one I have right now. Thanks.
