Discussion What is the most disturbing event in HP books?

I was rereading the Deadly hallows -book, and upon reading the part in which Nagini is puppeting Bathilda, I started wondering if that is the singular most disturbing event in the series. Which part traumatized you?

Discussion Which character was, in your opinion, sorted into the wrong house?

-Young Dumbledore is so Slytherin. If anything, he’s a Ravenclaw. The only reason he was in Gryffindor is because the main character also was sorted in it.

-Hagrid is the most Hufflepuff character of the whole series

-Crabbe and Goyle aren’t Slytherin at all. I would say the fit the Gryffindor profile best.

Discussion A bit late but, finally finished watching Harry Potter, and it feels weird now.

So yea, just finished deathly Hallows part 2 And..... That's it.

I must say, Harry Potter was a great escapism from my boring stressful life.

I watched the first movie around a month ago, it wasn't bad but wasn't the best thing I watched either

And then it got better and better.

I must say, I'm grateful to this series, for making my world a little more intresting Now that it's over, all that's left is me and my boring study books.

But I guess I'll manage, it was a wonderful experience.

Discussion Why all of a sudden?

It’s driving me crazy and I need answers! 😂😂

Why are there sooo many things “Harry Potter” again all of a sudden? Like the Goldfish, I see some specialty keychains in the form of a Mystery bag.

Is it a big anniversary coming up?

Discussion My ultra Christian mother just told me she thinks Harry Potter is satanic

1.7k Upvotes

I thought those kinda opinions were always a joke. Today in the car my mom legit told me she thinks Harry Potter is satanic. This is not a joke post either, she is kinda crazy. She feels the same way about heavy rock or metal music.

Edit: when we were younger she took us to Harry Potter world and didn’t share the same opinion, or at least didn’t speak on it . I think her mind is starting to go a little

Discussion Harry Potter and the Halfblood Prince scene of Harry being picked up by Dumbledore

I think one of the biggest mistakes the movie made was changing the part where Dumbledore picks up Harry from Private drive. In the movie, Harry is at a cafe when Dumbledore appears outside from across the subway. In the books, we not only get Harry’s anticipation of Dumbledore’s arrival but probably one of my favorite scenes from the books. The Dursleys are completely thrown off by him, he conjures them some drinks that end up tapping on the Dursley’s heads, and then gently lecture them about their mistreatment of Harry. I’m not sure why they chose to go a different direction and remove both the comedy and the meaningful things Dumbledore said about their relationship with Harry.

Discussion Anyone else find ginny kinda creepy/awkward in the Half blood prince movie?

I don’t know if anyone else thinks the same way, but she seems a bit creepy towards Harry and to me it just feels really awkward to watch. Like when she hand fed him pies (why?!?) for example and tied his shoe for him. Is this supposed to be romantic? It just feels weird to me.

Discussion Why Didn’t Ron and Harry Just Wait for the Adults Instead of Flying the Car

Okay, so in the Chamber of Secrets, Harry and Ron miss the train to Hogwarts and end up flying the enchanted Ford Anglia all the way there. I get why Harry would think the car was their only option—he grew up with the Dursleys and doesn’t know much about magical transportation.

But Ron? Ron grew up in a wizarding family! He knows about Floo powder, Portkeys, and all kinds of magical ways to travel. Plus, the adults—Arthur, Molly, or even the older siblings—wouldn’t have just left them stranded. Why didn’t they just wait at the platform for the grown-ups to come back and help them?

Was it panic? Teenage impulsiveness? Or just plot convenience? What do you think?

Discussion Why didn't they ask the portraits in CoS?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before so apologies if it has, but I thought of this a little while ago and haven't been able to find a solution.

When they didn't know what was causing all these students to be petrified, why didn't they just ask the portrait people what they saw? There's always paintings somewhere around the castle so no matter where the attack happened someone was bound to see the bloody great big snake staring at people.

And a slightly different note, if the basilisk looked at the people in the paintings, would they be petrified? If so, how would you revive them? You can't exactly give mandrake juice to a painting.

Discussion Is Aunt Marge blowing wind the last instance of Harry Potter using accidental magic?

Other instances I can think of are all earlier: shrinking the sweater, getting onto the roof and of course, disappearing the glass at the zoo causing Doodley to fall into the exhibit. I can’t recall any other examples post PoA. Am I missing any others, and are there examples of other wizards/witches accidentally using magic?

Help Help with Wizarding World website

Hi, my son is trying to complete the Wizarding World sorting hat quiz but as he reaches the last question instead of sending him to the ceremony it just pings him back to the start of the quiz or back to the main website home page. We've tried on both PC and on mobile.

Has anyone else experienced this or know how to resolve it?

Discussion Got into Harry Potter recently, finished reading Philosopher's Stone then watched the movie a day after. Thought it was okay, some stuff really bothered me though. Spoiler

Upvotes

The part after the giant chess sequence, where they just skipped (or forgot) to make the poison one, Harry's confrontation with Quirrel, the fact that the development of Hermione's relationship with Harry is not really there, and etc. I do think there were some really good scenes, though. I know its most likely due to the fact that its an adaptation of a 200+ page book, though I couldn't help but notice it. Did anyone else get bothered by it, or is it just me?

but Mundungus made such a crack that Harry hit the window?

the times that apparition are seen, some are silent, some include a "CRACK", why?

Discussion New book?

My son said there was a new book, he made it sound like a prequel, that came out about Harry Potter but I can’t find anything online. Do you guys know of any new books or any books in general that are related to the Potter series? These books are getting my son interested in chapter books so I want to keep that going. Thanks

Currently Reading Into my OOTP re-read and, my god, JK's introduction of Luna Lovegood just sparks so much joy

I see a lot of posts in here pointing out plot holes in the books, and they're often fair, but as I dive into my OOTP re-read I really do find myself just carried away by the charm of the world and the vividness of so many of the side characters, even though I do find myself spotting plot holes more than my first read two decades ago. I was already thinking this when Mad-Eye responds to finding out that Ron's been made a Prefect by musing that this must signal Ron's ability to 'withstand most major jinxes' - so very Mad-Eye - but it's taken up a notch with Luna.

The wand behind the left-ear. The necklace of Butterbeer corks. The 'protuberant eyes that gave her a permanently surprised look'. The reading the Quibbler upside-down. And then singing Ravenclaw's quote and immediately taking Ron to task for being Hogwarts’ worst Yule Ball date. It's just perfection, making me feel very strongly that I know her and get her and want so much more of her in a few short lines. I haven't read fanfic in about two decades but I might do a little explore after my re-read is done just because I feel like we could have done with even more Luna. One of my favourite JK character creations.

(I also appreciate Mundungus and Tonks. OOTP is like GOF in that one of its major perks is that the length gives so much room for side characters - Fleur, Bagman, Skeeter in GOF, and these guys in OOTP - to breathe and flourish)

Discussion Ranking Harry Potter movies Spoiler

8-Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince: Not a bad movie by any means, just has the least interesting plot and feels more like an information dump to set up the Deathly Hallows

7-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt:1: Pretty good movie but it suffers from the fact that it’s a part 1 of a two part story so there’s really no pay off. It would’ve worked better if this was the first 90 minutes of what could’ve been a 3 hour movie

6-Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Wasn’t crazy about this one when I first saw, but after more and more rewatches it grew on me immensely. It may not have that same magic from the first three films but it still is a very adventurous movie (even if the teenage angst is extremely cringe)

5-Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: Despite being overly long and way too similar to the first movie, it’s still a very good movie as it has that same fun and magic of the original. If this was maybe 30-40 minutes shorter, it probably would’ve been higher

4-Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone: The original movie still remains a classic. We are introduced to the fun, magical wizarding world of Harry Potter and it never fails to amaze me no matter how many times I watch it. Yeah some of the effects are dated and the acting from the kids is pretty bad, but it still isn’t enough to take away the fun from the movie

3-Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Severely underrated film that should get more love than it gets. Harry is in a constant battle with knowing that Voldemort is back and no one believing him, particularly the films notoriously hated villain Umbridge, leading to him forming a team to rebel against her and take down Voldemort. That to me makes for an interesting story and I’m surprised no one ever talks about this one. Also that battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort….chefs kiss

2-Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt 2: The franchise honestly could not have asked for a better conclusion. All the drama, all the tragedy, and all the sacrifice pays off very satisfyingly in this film. Even though it’s a bumpy road with heartbreaking and tear jerking moments, it still remains an amazing and fun film

1-Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: I mean…come on. What else could have been number 1 instead of this one? This is quite simply everything you would expect out of a Harry Potter film. Magic, adventure, friendship, high stakes etc while incorporating new elements like time travel and one of the best characters in Sirius Black, and it’s all delivered perfectly. There is no other way to say it simply, this a masterpiece of a movie and easily the best Harry Potter movie.

Let me know what you guys think
