Discussion Change my mind: As Above So Below is one of the most well written and thematically complex horror movies ever.

I love this movie so much. I could go on for hours about it. I think its discussion and view of Dante’s Inferno is incredible especially for a found footage film.

Discussion I Saw the TV Glow changed me

1.5k Upvotes

When I am at a weird crossways in my life this movie calls to me. I keep coming back to it and sometimes I can’t even explain why. I completely consider this movie horror - it has unsettled me and yet comforted me so deeply. I just remembered an often forgotten scene - the one when Owen is at the drive through. The drive through voice is distorted and cold. He is yelling through it, apologising. That’s it. Yet the voice is so intentionally cold and weird sounding, and Owen seems so…fawning? Anyway I just wanted to talk about this amazing film. Love ya’ll.

Edit: I grew up in the 90’s and this film nailed the vhs aesthetic of that time and the creepy effects some shows had back then. I’m also loving the discussion around this film. Just keep it respectful - the horror community is a place to be civil and friendly.

Final: I’ve realised many posters gave up on this movie before the “screaming scene”.

Discussion What horror film to you is the equivalent of “I did not care for the godfather”?

Hereditary is the second equivalent of this to me when thinking about it. It deeply insists upon itself for me. I tried to get into it but couldn’t as it was too long and really couldn’t tell what it wanted to be at all. I mention Halloween in the past but this also another film I did not care at 15. What’s something equivalent to this.

Discussion The Blob (1988) is one of the greatest horror remakes ever made, bar none.

The kills, the thrills, the suspense, practically everything about it is perfect. Sure, sometimes the effects look a little dated, but it's still a gruesome good time and it ticks me off that barely anyone brings up this flick when talking about excellent remakes.

What are your pettiest horror movie gripes?

There are lots of good reasons to criticize films, but I don't want to hear any of those. Give me your PETTIEST, most personal, pet peeve gripes with any horror movie. The smaller the reasoning behind the strong emotion, the better.

Discussion Heretic (2024) - Is Mr. Reed supposed to be hot? Spoiler

I’ve tagged this for spoilers, please be warned.

I’m going to preface this by saying that in the past Hugh Grant hasn’t really been my cup or tea (or slice of pie?) in terms of physical attractiveness level (I have nothing against his acting though), but he’s played enough romantic leads that it’s hard to feel like his casting wasn’t the result of an intentional plan to put a past heart throb in the role.

The title of this post is admittedly a little clickbaity, but I can see how Reed is played as highly charismatic in an “awkward but endearing” way before the plot really gets rolling. I think the casting of a past romantic lead who has aged a bit matches with this.

I’m in my 20s, a good bit older than Barnes and Paxton, but I think it’s interesting that the filmmakers seem to have gone out of their way to cast a decent looking Reed and then never make any mention to either one of the young women having any opinion on this. (I’m glad the movie wasn’t completely about sex because there’s a lot to explore about religion outside of that, I’m just curious how folks feel about Reed.)

I also want to throw in here that I am not someone with a habit of being into “psychopath” characters, so I’m basing this discussion starter purely on what one might make of the aesthetics of casting Hugh Grant and how he plays the character for the first half hour or so of the film. And I know there’s way more to unpack from this movie and this is a pretty shallow question, but I’ve read discussion threads on other aspects of the movie and hadn’t seen this come up.

How do folks feel? Is Reed hot? Supposed to be hot? Are women in their 20s part of the demographic that’s supposed to find him hot?

I obviously don’t think he’s hot by the end of the movie! Horrible behavior lol.

Beau is Afraid is Cathartic for me

As someone with major anxiety it fucking nails it. Obviously it expands it into something huge and ridiculous and nightmarish, but i still think it is a profound medetation on modern anxiety. The reason it works so well being so extreme is it is also fucking hilarious. Ari is showing real hell that I have lived but he is making it hilarious and beautiful. I have watched it three times and i want to watch it again, its weird to say such a fucked up movie soothes me but it truly does.

Also the way it functions as different chapters makes it impossible for me to get bored. There is the apartment, then the family, the the woods play, then the wake and trial. Its like mini movies in one movie and is perfect for my add ass.

I am just rambling at this point but i thought the whole theatre woods scene was spellbinding. It was fucking beautiful but still horrible.

This movie reminds me of someone being able to extract the most interesting dream he has ever had and show it to us. I have had those dreams that were horrific but also beautiful, where you wake up and you can still feel that impact of it but you cant quite bring it to light. It is like he did, like somehow he brought every detail of the dream world out and got it on film, like he had the camera rolling during the dream and when he woke up it was there with him

My partner and I just moved to a farm. We watched signs our first night here. It was a nice nostalgia but now we want the heat.

We are huge horror fans who will go to the ends of the earth to watch obscure movies. So all recommendations are welcome!

Make us regret moving to a farm!

(In case it wasn’t obvious we want movies that take place on farms)

Discussion Every Horror celebrity I have met

Every Horror celebrity I have met

Tony Todd: He was the first ever celebrity I met. Unfortunately I didn’t own a Candyman shirt, so I took my dad’s skeleton T shirt since Candyman’s bones are exposed. https://www.reddit.com/r/CreepyBonfire/s/7rVIsMeLDk When I went in for the costume photo op, I was a little awe struck to see him in person. When he saw my shirt, he pointed and said “look we match.” I couldn’t stop smiling like an idiot. This will forever be one of the most special moments of my life.

James Judd Cortney: As me and my dad were walking around the convention, we saw James sitting at his table completely alone. I felt bad that he didn’t have anyone, so we went and got a photo plus autograph from him for one $10. Kills had just come out last month so we talked about how amazing he was in it and my dad joked about the angry fire fighters on the internet. The next time we saw him at a convention his line was packed and his autograph was $60. I felt really happy that he got the attention he deserved

Doug Bradley: Me and my dad drove 7 hours to Philadelphia for this Monster mania. He was the first celebrity I had met since seeing Tony and JJC a year before, so I was really nervous. I didn’t really talk to him, and my photo was stiff. I don’t think he was stand offish though, I saw him taking selfies for free while he was walking around the convention later. His prices was noticeably the lowest of any celebrity there, over a 1/3 compared to the biggest. I respect him a lot for all this

Danielle Harris: I have met her twice, once for a in costume photo op and another for an autograph. Since there was no one else in line, I asked her if I could do a little interview about Dead by Daylight which you can see here. I was ridiculously nervous because this was the most I talked to a celebrity before, but she was super calm and nice. I managed to say everything without messing up at all partly because of her attitude. It’s still one of my favorite memories and it’s helped me do better with my social anxiety.

Lance Henrikson: By far my strangest meeting. For starters, while I was sitting in the line he pointed at me from among the crowd and said my shirt was awesome. I always feel touched and smile like an idiot when celebrities notice my shirts. It sorta feels like they are noticing me as a person than just another fan they are taking photos with. When I did get to his table, he spoke rather strangely. He had a sorta languidly attitude that felt really weird. I talked to him about Aliens and how I bought a copy of Near Dark to watch before meeting him. When we went to take the photo he asked if my dad wanted to join. I said “uh, he doesn’t really get in them.” (He isn’t really into horror, he goes to the events for me) And Lance said “oh, how cruel.” I could tell he was just joking around, but it felt strange. Later on there was an Alien and Aliens panel. They called out the cast in order to take their chairs. First the crew of the Nostromo, then the marines, then Newt, then finally Bishop. But instead of taking his seat, he kept walking and sat next to Tom Skerrit instead. Carrie Henn said “oh Lance” like a sitcom and the panel continued. Throughout the panel it was hard to tell if the responses he gave were jokes or serious. Some comments on the panel video I uploaded said Lance was drunk. I don’t think he was drunk based on Carrie’s reaction. Either he is just essentric, or he has that old person thing where they lose inhibition. Overall it was a positive experience and he wasn’t rude, just unlike any interaction I have ever had before

Carrie Henn: This is the one I was probably looking forward to the most. The first thing that happened was that the yellow marker she used didn’t work on the wax poster I brought for the cast to sign. The ink was still wet essentially. She asked if I wanted a new one then she went across the room to have Lance resign a new picture. After we took a picture together, I showed off my phone case: https://www.reddit.com/r/LV426/s/TzADdFkpRx I explained how Aliens was my favorite movie and the biggest reason was her and Ripley’s bond. She seemed really flattered about it. She was really nice and it was worth every second of driving and waiting in line. I also mentioned offhand once how I wanted Weaver to sign the poster one day, and she essentially said “yeah… good luck with that.” I really hope I can complete my poster one day

Kane Hodder: Nice dude. We talked a little bit about Friday the 13th. I asked him when Hatchet 5 is coming and he signed and said he doesn’t know yet. I was tempted to ask him to strangle me because I heard he’ll really do it for photos, but I didn’t want to try.

Amie Donald: I spent most of the time just complimenting her performance and how I really hope she gets to play M3gan again (this was before they announced she was coming back). She was so positive and adorable. I really wanted to give her a hug like she was my tiny cousin, but didn’t want to be weird

Amelia Mclain: When I met her, I told her how I didn’t like the first Terrifier movie because the plot was paper thin. Felt more like a special effects reel than a proper film. But the story really improved with 2, mainly because of her character. The Little Pale Girl made Art’s character more interesting, and her performance was a big part of it. She seemed really touched, I wouldn’t be surprised if I was one of the first people to say something like that to her. A lot of people seemed to went to meet her just so complete the set or so they can have her and Art together. I was really sad when Damien shafted her in 3

Quinn Lord: I went over to him thinking “don’t ask him about Trick r treat 2. He isn’t a kid anymore so it might be a sad topic if they replace him as Sam.” I got the autograph and asked him if there was any word on if part 2 was being made. He jokingly said “yeah, we are just in the pre-pre-pre-pre-pre-production stage.” I then walked away saying “stupid! Stupid! Stupid!” In my head. I am glad he is joking around about it though and doesn’t seem sad.

Heather Langenkamp: I waited in line for about 5 hours to meet her. Partly because her lunch break and the Nightmare panel lined up at the same time I went to get in line. But it was mainly because she spent so much time with each of her fans, just talking to each one of them. She really did seem to enjoy being there and seeings the fans. When I went up to her (with my childhood Freddy glove on), I spent few minutes gushing about she is the greatest final girl in Horror and how all 3 of her Nightmare roles was amazing. As I walked away, I heard her assistant say to her “I think that was the nicest Freddy we had all day.” I started to do a goofy smile thinking “I was the nicest Freddy today! 🤩” Then I got worried “oh no, did all the other Freddys call her a b!***?” Side note: throughout the 5 hour wait, there was a very large fat man behind me in line who smelled like hot cheese. He had several layers of fat that made him look like a hamburger, and he carried a chair around with him everywhere because he can’t stand for too long. I struggled to keep a straight face as I got closer to Heather, but I briefly forgot the smell entirely after I started to speak to her. Afterwards my dad says that smell is the “smell of rotting flesh.” He speculated that the guy doesn’t clean the folds of his fat well enough, causing dead skin, sweat and other junk to stew. I felt really bad for Heather and to remind people to take care

Robert Englund: As soon as I walked in, he immediately said my shirt was amazing. It was the cover of X-men #1 with Freddy and the Dream warriors replacing the characters, and he totally got the reference. We both had gloves on and he said “just strike a pose like a couple of cool guys.” After he told me I should go show Heather the shirt (she didn’t get it). He was so cool, like 80s TV show cool guy.

Eugene Clark: He was quite the talker, haha. He told me a lot about his personal life, and I said a lot of stuff from mine. I bought these figures from him: said he has had them since Land of the dead came out. https://www.reddit.com/r/zombies/s/Q0zNup2QUG He actually recognized me when I met him again at a convention 2 years later. Also fun fact, if you ask him to do the zombie scream he will yell so loudly you can hear him from across the convention. Made me jump the first time he did it.

William Ragsdale: Probably the encounter I remember the least about (not to insult or say he was boring or anything). I remember I told him about how much I liked Fright Night and he talked about his cameo in Renfield.

Stephen Geoffreys: He was a pretty friendly guy. I felt really dumb when he was talking about movies he was in and I said “oh you were in Evil-976? Oh wait, you are on the cover I am so dumb.” He laughed it off, but I hope I didn’t come off rude by accident.

Shawnee Smith: I waited in line for almost 2 and a half hours to meet her. Not because she was gone, but because she had long talks with every single fan that came to her table. When I first walked up she asked if we met before. I said “no, but maybe you saw me in your dreams” while making a dramatic pose. She laughed and we talked a bit about Saw. I mentioned how I watched her newest movie Bloodline killer and she asked what I thought. I said everything I liked about it and she said I was the first person to give her a review of it. She was really nice. She took some selfies with me, and I still cringe today with how unphotogentic i am.

Nick Castle: Pretty calm, relaxed dude. I show him photos of me walking around my town as Michael for Halloween and he thought it was cool.

Kyra Schon: So I was waiting around for her to return from lunch and decided to take a walk. While I did, I walked an older woman that stared at me strangely. I stare back confused, then I realized that the woman was Kyra. I make a dumb shocked face and keep walking. I face palm afterwards and thought. “oh crap i looked like a weirdo and made her uncomfortable. I hope she doesn’t remember the dope wearing her face on his shirt looking at her like an idiot.” When I finally met her at the table, she mentions seeing me earlier. “I think oh no here it comes.” But then she says that she was shocked because I looked like a former student of her’s. I won’t say much more for her privacy, but we talked for a long time about both personal stuff and Night of the living dead. I had a friend who was making fan art of Karen ask me what the dress color was, and I made me realize official products can’t decide between blue, red or white. According to the actress herself, it was orange! My friend tried to color it according: https://www.reddit.com/r/zombies/s/tTCiAEmHCH After we were done, she asked if I could take a picture with her. I felt so honored a celebrity asked for my photo.

Michael Biehn: I got him to sign the poster I got Henrickson and Henn on already. He said that of all the movies he’s been in, Aliens was probably his favorite to film. Him and all the other marines are in a group chat together and still talk. He spoke very highly of Weaver and gave me tips on ways to see her. “She’s really nice. I am sure if she saw this poster you brought with everyone else’s names she’d sign it for you.” He was a real cool dude

Allyson Court: she was in a Jubilee costume when I met her. https://www.reddit.com/r/residentevil/s/oZ5ToGFaLb When she saw my first aid prop she said “awe, you brought me a herb spray!” I talked a bit about how Claire is my favorite RE character and I thought her performance tied it all together.

Isabelle Furman: Just saw her yesterday. She was a really humble and down to Earth person. We talked for a bit about the Orphan movies and she told me a little bit about the part 3 that’s in development (it’s mostly a prequel). Overall she was really nice and of all the celebrities I met, she’s one of the ones that felt the most like an normal person.

Tobin Bell: Unfortunately I could only do a pro photo op with him because of the lines he had, meaning I only saw him for a few moments. He shook my hand and said hello. He put his arm on my shoulder and we took the photo. He was pretty friendly with everyone in line, and I was a little awe stuck seeing him face to face. All around a really respectable guy.

Hidden Gem You should watch Birth/Rebirth if you haven't already

Upvotes

I saw this was last mentioned around a year ago, but it just popped up on Shudder for me, so...I highly recommend Birth/Rebirth if you haven't seen it! Incredibly compelling female characters, very dark and macabre. More of a drama/thriller than concrete scares, but this can be a nebulous genre sometimes. I am also happy to say that the ending was very strong, something I think is pretty rare even in horror movies I enjoyed a lot. I was very engaged the whole way through. Probably one of my favorites, now!

Sorry if this is actually more popular than I think--I hadn't seen any talk about it, at least.

Some content warnings and a premise below.

Rose (Marin Ireland) is a pathologist who prefers working with corpses over social interaction. She also has an obsession -- the reanimation of the dead. Celie (Judy Reyes) is a maternity nurse who has built her life around her bouncy, chatterbox six-year-old daughter, Lila (A.J. Lister). When one tragic night, Lila suddenly falls ill and dies, the two women's worlds crash into each other. They embark on a dark path of no return where they will be forced to confront how far they are willing to go to protect what they hold most dear.

CW: Abortion, Miscarriage, Pregnancy, Minor Sexual Violation, Occasional anatomical gore, Brief blood and guts, Animal death

Recommend The Last Excorcism (2010) hidden gem

quick appreciation post for my favorite found footage styled horror movie

plot: a man who makes a career out of conning religious people by performing exorcisms, decides to make a documentary exposing the chicanery of it all. he visits a family, who believes their daughter is possessed. when his usual tactics of 'expelling the demon' does not work, he realizes he is face-to-face with the real evil

the acting is superb. its one of those movies that give you a claustrophobic feeling, like youre apart of it. the setting is straight out of my nightmares, a rural louisiana farmhouse. the suspense is top notch and what i love most about this film, there is no use of CGI or special effects. the actress is a contortionist. its so raw & genuinely terrifying as hell. just dont watch the second one lol, its trash

Looking for end of the world movies - no happy endings

Looking for some GOOD end of the world type movies, with no happy endings. In the mood for doom-and-gloom! Lately I’ve been searching for alien type movies like this, but not much of substance out that, that I have found. I really don’t have any examples to give, that I can think of, just want to watch something and when it ends, I want to be like “damn”. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, much appreciated!

Finally Saw Wicker Man: Cage Version

Caveat: I was high af, drank a couple beers too

I loved it. Avoided it for years but been on a Cage kick lately, and it’s been a blast. It was so over the top that I was hooked right away. As usual Cage is incredible. Overall I thought it was fairly well done, and Cage kicking Leloo into the wall might be one of the greatest scenes ever. He just pummels them! The ending was great. I was looking forward to the bees scene and it never happened! Must be an alternate ending

I mean, 40 million budget is absolutely ridiculous. If it was a low budget indie film I’d be even more ecstatic about it. And while I am bitter it was filmed in Canada and not my backyard of the San Juans, it still looks really nice

Overall 1/2 out of **

I was giggling so fucking hard throughout. Cage is a national treasure, no pun intended

Recommend What horror movie would you recommend to a newbie/someone who doesn't like horror?

Upvotes

One of my goals this year is to watch a horror movie by myself. I've attempted this twice now, and ended up seeing Companion and Death of a Unicorn. I enjoyed them both, but they weren't all that scary.

I think my ability to pick a horror film is fundamentally skewed by the fact that I don't particularly want to be frightened or unsettled. So, I've come to the experts to ask for help!

If it helps you make suggestions, these are some horror movies I think I would have liked if I didn't chicken out and watch video essays on them instead:

  • The Menu
  • Heretic
  • The Substance
  • Woman in the Yard

Also, I really enjoyed What's Inside (if that counts) and gaming wise, I've picked up Control and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice because they piqued my interest.

Discussion Talk to Me & Bring Her Back

I just joined this sub & really wanted to make a post about these two movies so please bear with me.

I just watched “Talk to Me” for the first time yesterday & now I can’t stop watching interviews of the Philippou Brothers & the rest of the cast/crew. Then, just today, I discovered the trailer for “Bring Her Back.” WOW. Let me say, I’m not easily impressed with horror movies. If I don’t feel at least a little nauseated after the movie then I don’t consider it scary (and unfortunately I’m one of those people who really likes to trigger their nervous system!).

But with “Talk to Me” the actors, the script, the practical effects. I definitely felt a little unsettled while watching it. I love all of the details that have been put into the story. It felt still within the genre of familiar while also taking a unique step outside of it that did not disappoint. This movie had me hooked, wondering what could possibly happen next? What will the spirits do to continue manipulating Mia? Will they get Riley? What is actually real & not the spirits fcking with Mia’s head? Will all of my questions be answered?

And then the trailer for “Bring Her Back”? It looks even more promising! I seriously love the Philippou Brothers for taking the route of more practical effects rather than CGI. It seems they have a really great grasp on what actually makes the eeriness of horror & I seriously appreciate that. Often times, I feel modern day horror is just loads of blood & gore. Which can be horrifying but only if it’s done right. Horror is not just violence. You can’t just put blood in a depressing movie & claim it’s “horror.” I think the Philippou Brothers have found “their genre” if you get me. I’d of course love to see them direct other genres too but. If this trailer lives up to itself, I really think they could continuously dominate horror as a whole!!

Okay sorry I’m just so excited, here’s my questions (if anyone else is as excited as I am):

What did you think of “Talk to Me”? Are you looking forward to “Bring Her Back”? What would you name your Top 3(+) horror movies? Here’s some of my top movies in no particular order: Hereditary, The Shining, Midsommar, Us, Get Out, & His House.

Discussion Finished "Verónica" (2017), the movie itself wasn't scary but the story behind it kinda freaks me out.

I can find a logical explanation for everything in the story except the police testimony. Why would the police lie about the supernatural things they saw in the apartment? It does not make sense. I dont believe in ghosts or whatever, but I have finished the movie a few days ago and I keep thinking about the story it is based on. Maybe something about Estefanía gutiérrez lázaro's case is true after all? What are your thoughts?
