Serious replies only Went to A&E after eating food from Harrods – trying to see if it’s an isolated case

I visited Harrods on 4 April around 20:15 (based on my receipt) and bought the following from the food hall:

  • Prawn cocktail sandwich
  • Croissant
  • Caramel custard

The next day (5 April), I developed severe diarrhoea (watery, about four times a day) and ended up going to A&E, where I was diagnosed with viral gastroenteritis.

I called Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council to report a food safety issue, but they said they couldn’t act over the weekend. I also tried submitting a report through the Food Standards Agency's self-service form (https://myrbkc.rbkc.gov.uk/forms/report-problem/food-safety/) , but I couldn't complete it due to an issue with the date format.

I suspect the cause may be the food from Harrods because I was staying at a friend’s place, and we ate exactly the same things throughout the day until dinner. He didn’t eat the food from Harrods—and he’s completely fine.

Just wondering: has anyone else had similar symptoms after eating at Harrods recently?

Transport “KARENS” are a needed and necessary evil

2.0k Upvotes

If you’ve used the London Underground enough times, you know the rules: don’t make eye contact, stand on the right, etc. Very Simple and effective. Yet every so often, someone ignores this social contract.

Thursday. Northern Line. People crowd the doorway like it’s a lifeboat—even though there’s clearly space further in. Enter a hero I choose to call Karen in Shining Armour. She storms to the front and screams - louder than all the overbearing announcements - for everyone to move down.

And just like that, the Red Sea parts. Space magically appears. Air returns. I don’t have to have to wait a couple of minutes for the next train - extreme happiness, tears in my eyes.

Honestly, this is my unpopular shout out to all the good “Karens” out there.. TfL should add “Karen energy” to the job description. “Please move right down inside the carriage… or Karen will make you.”

Can anyone recommend a good endocrinologist for Hashimoto’s in London?

Hi all, I’m based in London and looking for a recommendation for an endocrinologist (private or NHS) who has experience with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Ideally someone who listens, takes a patient-centred approach. Thanks a lot!

Serious replies only where do the vintage fashion baddies congregate?

this is a really weird question but i’ve been searching online for a while and i can’t figure it out. i’m an amateur vintage fashion lover who usually wears vintage or vintage replica day to day. sometimes out and about, at vintage car shows or at places like Cahoots, i see groups of people in serious full on vintage outfits (like full accurate and genuine 1940s-70s). i want to be friends with those kinds of people who dress like that more day to day but i can’t find them! do they hibernate ?? i’ve tried looking for facebook groups or subreddits but ive struck out, and i usually don’t see them at some of the big vintage fashion fairs…

please help me befriend the vintage baddies it’s so isolating being the only person i know to dress like a great grandma :’(

£20 challenge

Looking for suggestions to feed 3 of us lunch on a weekend in London (or within striking distance). Budget is £25 total — not a penny more!

Rules: • Not a supermarket meal deal • Two of the eaters are older kids (8+), so baby portions won’t cut it

Communal BBQ experiences

With the sunny weather over the past few days I’ve started looking forward to a good BBQ this Summer. Then I remembered Im in the same position as lots of Londoners in that I don’t have a garden, I don’t have a BBQ, and also don’t have lots of friends to organise a park BBQ with.

Are there any parks in London during the Summer where people host good quality BBQ food (not gourmet / fancy, just on an actual BBQ and not those supermarket trays) where you could go alone or with a few friends with a picnic blanket, and just buy burgers / hot dogs etc, and just chill? Even better if it’s in public space and you can bring your own alcohol, but not if it becomes a place where too many people get rowdy.

If this doesn’t exist already, how come?

Ideas If you are feeling invisible,

All you have to do is hang around a food stall or independent ethnic restaurant, and casually look at the menu sign (optional). You will immediately feel seen and acknowledged. You're welcome

Help with EP needed‼️

hi everyone! i’m a singer songwriter from brighton who has been making music for years but has never released anything and want 2025 to be the year that changes! I worked with a lovely producer on a single last october that will be coming out soon, but i have a 5 track EP i’d like to put out and i’ve got licenses for all the tracks that I chose from certain producers as I knew the vision I was after and I’ve written the songs, I just am awful at ableton and don’t have great mics so I was wondering if anyone would be interested in helping me with recording the vocals and then mixing and mastering them for me so I can get the songs ready to release? I’d be happy to pay you! I don’t have a huge budget but we could discuss what I could afford and also I would of course cover the studio time for recording!! if anyone in london or brighton or actually anywhere in the uk would be interested like I said I have the backing tracks all sorted so it’s just helping me record vocals and mixing and mastering it :) please do get in touch!

French immigrants in London, are there any bakeries that sell tasty croissants/baguettes for under £2?

As a former Parisian (who's not actually french to know how to bake my own), I crave croissants, pain au chocolats, baguettes, etc. But my heart dies a little every time I see a £3.50 baguette, when I know in my heart they cost 1.20€/£1. I haven't yet had the heart to buy them at that price. The only long boi I've had the heart to buy was this time I saw an épée for £4 and thought that was an okay price for something fancy, and some almond croissants.

Preferably somewhere in zone 1 or along/near the Liz Line, would be great!

Hammersmith tube

WHY does part of Hammersmith station that both the circle line / Hammersmith & city lines operate out of never leave on time?

It’ll always state this tube is departing in 1 minute from platform 3 but it’s still sat there 7 minutes later and a different platform will leave first?

Ultimately I know 7 minutes isn’t a huge amount of time but it’s bloody annoying for no reason

Jury service - can I bring my laptop and work?

I’ve been called for jury service and I’m actually quite looking forward to getting a peek into the workings of the legal system. I’ve been told there’s a lot of sitting around and waiting, so am I able to bring my laptop with me during the sitting around and waiting parts?

I’m aware it’s not possible when the court stuff starts but I’m not sure how long that would take.

Has anyone who’s done jury service got any advice or insight? I’m interested to know how it all works.

Companies in London seem more cautious hiring now?

11 years ago I was 22 and I started looking for a corporate job in February 2014 and had two offers by the end of June. In recent years I started my own business and did freelance work. I'm now looking to get back into a full time corporate role and I've found it so hard to get offered a job. I've done so many interviews over the last year. Fortunately, I am not in a desperate situation. I am just looking to make a professional step change. I have enough income etc... But it really struck me recently how relatively easy it was to get a corporate job in London when I was 22 and had hardly any experience back in 2014. Now I have way more experience and I find it hard to get offered a job.
