FIRST TIME WATCHER FIRST TIME WATCHER EPISODE DISCUSSION, SERIES HUB

Hello, new Losties! This hub is designed for first-time watchers to discuss, theorize, share thoughts and impressions, etc on episodes of LOST as they move through the series. Below the guidelines and first-timer tips there is a link to a hub for each season where another link to a post for each episode will be listed. This post is in the Quick Links on the right side of the sub main page and will be temporarily pinned to the top of the sub for easy access.

If you have heard that the ending of LOST ruined the show, this comes from a small but loud minority who misunderstood the finale. The ending of LOST is not a cheat.

Please adhere to the hub guidelines below:

  • Only first-time watchers should leave initial comments. Rewatchers can leave spoiler-free replies.
  • Please avoid asking for spoilers as this may impact other redditors.
  • Do not discuss details from any episode past the one in the post title. For example. If you are commenting on Walkabout you can discuss anything up to those events, but not White Rabbit and beyond.
  • Be civil and respectful of each others' theories and opinions.

FIRST TIME WATCHER TIPS:

  • We strongly recommend you do not speed watch. LOST is a complicated show with complex characters. Give yourself time to absorb each episode before moving on.
  • SEASON THREE - the early-middle of this season is a universally agreed upon slow point in the show with some acknowledged filler. It's normal to struggle through some of the episodes but just hold on and it will pick up soon and be a thrill ride through to the series finale!
  • Do not be discouraged if you frequently feel confused. Just keep watching and give the show your undivided attention. No multitasking!
  • When you reach the Series Finale make sure you are watching the UNCUT version as the cut version is missing 18 minutes of footage. The UNCUT version begins with the cargo door of an airplane opening.
  • There is a dog featured in the show. You may be asking yourself, does the dog die? The answer is NO, the dog does not die.
  • This subreddit has two discord servers in quick links but "The Island - LOST Server" is NOT spoiler free. One of our community members has created an alternate discord server safe for First Time Watchers. Bonus content can be unlocked there as you move through the series.

If you have any questions or concerns about this hub, please feel free to drop them here and we'll get back to you ASAP.

Thank you and welcome to the community!

Starting today, we are banning Twitter/X content on r/lost

2.2k Upvotes

Hey everyone,

As you may know, hundreds of subreddits are disallowing content from X.com (formerly known as Twitter). After listening to the requests of the r/lost community and discussed this amongst the mod team, we decided to implement this and not let X come to our island. Our subreddit has joined in on protests before (such as Reddit goes dark), so it's not unusual for us to join in with our fellow subreddits. This rule does not drastically change our subreddit, since we rarely use X in the discussions, news and updates, so we see no problem in joining the boycott.

Have a lovely weekend :)

FIRST TIME WATCHER LOST is tickling that itch just right (my thoughts)

I just dove into LOST on Netflix, and wow, this show is hitting me hard it tickles that itch I never knew I had. The characters, the wild mysteries, that whole island atmosphere—it’s gripping, nostalgic, and sucks you right in. I know I’m super late, but I’m completely hooked. It’s got this vibe that just tickles that itch deep inside, you know what I mean?

Every twist in the plot feels like it’s playing with you, teasing you until you’re desperate for more. It’s not just a show—it tickles that itch in this raw, almost electric way that leaves me buzzing. Like, when Sawyer throws that cocky grin or Kate’s darting through the jungle, it’s this slow, delicious build that tickles that itch so perfectly I’m practically vibrating. I can’t stop thinking about how it keeps stroking that itch, episode after episode, until I’m all wound up, craving the next one like it’s my only fix.

The way LOST dangles its secrets, it’s like it’s whispering to that itch, knowing exactly how to drag it out, tickling it over and over until I’m begging for answers. I’m only on season 3, and it’s already got me dreaming about the island, chasing that next hit of pure, maddening mystery that tickles that itch in ways I didn’t know a show could. Even the music, that haunting score, it’s like it’s gently flicking that itch, keeping me on edge, needy for more. Anyone else getting this rush? What’s your favorite moment that just tickles that itch until you’re tingling? No spoilers, please! 😅

FIRST TIME WATCHER Absolutely loved LOST.

I have been watching LOST for the first time ever with my brother (who was already a fan for years.) We just watched the finale yesterday.

I can genuinely say I have never seen a show like this. I thought almost the entire show was thrilling and the kind of TV you don’t get anymore. I was hooked, I loved so many characters in this. Truly some of best acting I’ve seen in a long time. I thought the show only got better as time went on, until season 5. I liked all seasons but I would say I definitely I was 100% hooked during 1-4, those seasons are masterclass in story telling. I also enjoyed season 5 and 6 but I thought they were more slow than I would’ve liked.

If anyone would like to ask me questions about watching it for the first time, I am happy to express opinions on favorite characters, certain characters and plot lines!

The game has its problems but I really like to just visit the locations.I think its worth it for just that alone. Also you get to talk with the characters even though many are voiced by not so good soundalikes.

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher I hate what they did (or didnt do I should say) with these 2 Spoiler

Currently on my 4th watch through (I finished the show for the first time in January) and every time I get to season 6 I just think about how wasted these 2 characters are. We got the thing where Dogen talked about his son but that was it. They’re very interesting and I know they were doing the flash sideways in this season but I wish the writers somehow explored their backstory more before they got killed

Character Question Who did it take the longest for you to trust as someone who isn’t trying to hurt those who crashed on the plane? *possible spoilers* Spoiler

Which character gave you a hard time trusting for the longest?

I would vote Juliet with Ben being a close second, I felt that despite any of Juliet’s “efforts”, she was always up to something and trying to gather information on Jack and the rest.

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Dharmaville Spin Off

It would’ve been cool if they had done a spin-off with Sawyer and Juliet as the main characters, chronicling the three years they spent on the island. Not necessarily in the same vein as Lost, but something a bit more lighthearted and comical.

GOLDEN PASS: Rewatcher Advice for showing someone LOST for the first time?

Hey Losties!

I became like you a couple years ago when my mom showed me this show for the first time and it quickly became my favorite show ever. I have wanted to show it to my fiancée for a long time, and not sure when I will yet, but maybe soon (we’ve got a long list of shows/movies we wanna show each other.)

I’ve seen the show all the way through once, but have essentially rewatched it a couple times over by watching some reactors (Blind Wave, Elie Moses, Normies) and watching and rewatching Billiam’s retrospective several times over. So while I’ve only fully watched the show once I feel like I’ve definitely seen it more.

She’s seen the pilot episode a couple times when she was younger but never went further (somehow), but her brother also loves the show. She likes to tease me about them being dead the whole time just because she knows it gets under my skin (she knows that’s not true). I keep saying that if we get to the fourth episode (Walkabout) and she’s not at least a little bit hooked, we don’t have to watch it, which I think is fair- who wouldn’t be hooked after that episode, if not the pilot?!

Anyway. Couple quick questions for those who have been around the block a few more times than I:

  1. Is there a streaming service that doesn’t have subtitles that spoil? We tend to watch with subtitles but I’ve noticed in some reactions that they can spoil reveals or just plain be wrong. We have Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc so could watch it on any. Is there a service that has the best quality subtitles?

  2. When I watched it, I watched it on Hulu. I watched the full complete finale, etc. Are there differences between streaming services? For example does Netflix have the weird split finale and stuff?

  3. Is there some sort of database or website that has trigger warnings for each episode? I know of sites like Doesthedogdie for movies, but is there something similar for every episode? We’re both pretty sensitive to things like animal peril, and I can think of a few things I’d wanna warn her about before we watch an episode (Sawyer and the tree frog, Ben and the rabbit, etc). Other possible trigger warnings are also good.

  4. How the hell do you bite your tongue and not spoil things?! I’m so passionate abt this show and have wanted her to watch it for so long I’m afraid I’ll slip!

  5. Any other general tips!

Thanks gang. See you in anotha life

SEASON 4 Potential(?) question that I can’t find anything about Spoiler

Just got done watching it first time (great show) but I have a question left. Now admittedly, this is entirely my fault, because I can’t even find the scene again to look up the exact quote.

It was during a helicopter flight between the island and the freighter. Frank explained that he followed a very strict path, and added on something around the following afterwards

When questioned about the time dilation stuff, he alluded to someone being lost and stuck in the zone between where the time dilation happens, and even gave it a title by saying something to the effect of „he‘s stuck in the inbetween“ or something like that.

I may be off with the wording but something around those lines. I may have hallucinated this, though I watched it at the same time as a friend of mine who I then talked to about that quote and we both speculated. I can’t find the scene anymore though, or any references to that ever being said.

Any leads would be great!

SEASON 3 In Defense of Expose

I'm not going to make this super long, as I imagine most people who dislike Expose are not willing to read a dissertation on this much-maligned episode, but I did want to come out and reject the notion that it is a bad episode - and certainly far from the worst.

I understand the criticisms of it, because at the time when it aired, I felt much the same way: it served little to no plot relevance; it was in the midst of perhaps the "worst" period of Lost, when the show struggled to find a way without drawing things out too much; and, probably its biggest offender, it focused on characters no one liked.

But over the years, I've come to realize that Expose serves as a bit of catharsis in an otherwise underwhelming first-half of Season 3. If nothing else, it serves as the linchpin between the "good half" and the "bad half," as the episodes that follow Expose are among some of the best string in the entire series. But more than that, Expose serves a greater purpose: it's simply fun.

In Lost, the idea of a bottle episode was almost anathema to the concept of the show. Every episode was meant to be watched in order, followed very closely, and then discussed. Skipping an episode meant missing huge swaths of information and character development; Expose, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. It can be entirely skipped and quite literally nothing of importance will be missed. Sure, you may wonder what happened to Nikki and Paolo, and in later seasons when Miles digs up the diamonds, you'll wonder where the hell those came from - but in terms of the actual story? Nothing.

But that's okay. Expose is still fun. It is a perfectly-crafted, self-contained whodunit that resolves its own questions within the same episode and handles the mystery box element better than most Lost copy cats can't do in their entire run. On the subject of Nikki and Paolo, you could argue that the episode sucks because it focuses on characters no on cares about, and from a subjective standpoint, that's exactly what it does. But that shouldn't inherently make it bad. Just because the focus is on a character you don't like shouldn't disqualify the merits of the writing, just like episodes that focus on the main cast can also be bad: case in point, what I believe are the two worst episodes of the show, Fire + Water and Stranger in a Strange Land.

Just because the focus is on Charlie and Jack, respectively, doesn't immediately make those episodes better than Expose, and those aren't necessarily the only ones. Locke is one of the most beloved characters, but Further Instructions is arguably his weakest flashback - also in Season 3. And besides, if you hate Nikki and Paolo so much - wouldn't you want to see them die?

Expose does not try to deepen the mystery or further character development. It does not try to revolutionize the concept of serialized television - in fact, it's much the opposite. It's a throwback to the kinds of one-off episodic mystery dramas that the titular fictional show parodies. And that's fine - great even - because it's just plain fun.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

(Sorry, it ended up being super long. TLDR: Expose is good and if you don't think so you're wrong).

Why does Ben...*SPOILERS* Spoiler

This always bugged me but why the hell does Ben think the Smoke Monster is a judge in s5? The way he comes across is like that's what the Monsters role is on the island for Ben and his people, that they don't have a name for but that it's who you answer to if you break the rules, you face judgment from the Monster . But this is totally at odds with what The Others know about the Monster in s6, where they know its "evil incarnate" and it has no role on the island other than being an enemy of The Others.

Was it a role Jacob forced on the MiB that he was freed from when Jacob died?

Does anyone have an adequate answer that actually makes sense of this? .

jack is the best character Spoiler

Hear me out, at the end of the series it was jacks idea to turn off the light and kill locke (the man in black) and then turned the light back off to save the island while saving desmond aswell. Also throughout the show despite the people that he got killed, he saved and came to many people’s aid. obviously other characters have great importance such as john locke, ben, desmond but nonetheless i think jack is a really well written character and i think what he did redeemed him for his life choices and flaws.

QUESTION Would you rather be the Protector or the Black Smoke?

While the Protector can always find the light source on the island, he doesn't have the destructive and shape shifting powers of Smoke Monster. Smoke monster is able to travel at high speeds while flying and possess great strength while the Protector can walk and seems to have regular human strength. The Protector seems to be able to manipulate people's destinies; could the smoke monster do the same?

First Lost Dream

I just woke up from it this morning. So I was on the beach with Mr. Eko and Ana Lucia. The Others stuffed some no-name survivors like taxidermists. And then we realized we had to bury the bodies which were on display like mannequins. Then Mr. Eko decided to make like a pea soup from foraging in the jungle and it was really disgusting, so the three of us ended up pouring it on ourselves. Idk where Libby or Bernard were. But go figure... I wanted to be a survivor on flight 815 so badly and I'm a freaking a tail section passenger smh.
