EDITED *NEW* Change in how non-verified comments are handled

Over the past few months, our posts have gotten some feedback that varies from incorrect to downright ridiculous. To mitigate that, we now have set parameters where only verified users who are either medical professionals or students of healthcare programs can have a top-level comment. Unverified users/users who are not medical professionals will still be able to post replies to top-level comments or as a reply to the Automod message. With this change, we aim to increase the visibility of professional and evidence-based members. Thank you for your support, and for helping us make this sub a great place.

EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Pregnancy/Contraception Could birth control be causing my constant headache

Upvotes

I recently started birth control for my painful periods recently and within maybe 4 or 5 days of starting I was getting a headache every day. I obviously assumed it was from the tablets but I'm noticing it'd always on the same side of my head (mostly left temple, but sometimes just all over the left side) and it sometimes moves to my cheekbone and face.

I'm concerned it could be a tooth issue but I don't have any pain when eating or touching my teeth. I find lying on my left side helps relieve the pain but if I sleep on it the headache is worse when I wake up (I'm thinking the tension is making it worse?)

I can't call my doctor until the end of the month so I just want to know soon if its something more serious or if I should just wait it out

EDITED I blacked out. Twice.

On Saturday AM, I woke up to my wife rubbing my arm. I kind of understood what the real intention was so I initiated.

Unfortunately, I only realized after she mounted me that I REALLY needed to go drain the snake.

So I jumped out of bed & went to the bathroom. I stood over the toilet to do my business, I was concentrating on not messing because I was still hard & I... blacked out...

Problem being, I stepped backwards & fell onto the corner of the bath cutting a nice deep wound into my back.

She heard me fall & came to help. I was crying out in pain as I cut a nasty gash deep into my back.

I don't remember this part but she told me to go back to the bed & got me up. After getting up I was walking back to the bedroom & blacked out again. This time my right shoulder smashed the wall & my right head too (slight indentation) & I ended up on the floor.. with my eyes rolled back.

She panicked & was calling an ambulance when I came too. She had also put on jeans & a t-shirt so I'm guessing I was out for a few minutes. I told her I was fine & I'll drive myself to the hospital - just get me some honey to raise my blood sugar. Ambulances are expensive & we live 5 minutes from the hospital.

She didn't believe me so I did a few push ups (no idea why I thought this would work).

Anyways we ended up going to the hospital - she drove - and the Dr ran blood tests & a CT scan. Had to get a tetnus jab too. Everything came back normal...

He told me I need to go get my glucose checked. As my dad & sister are diabetic.

My cousin is also a Dr & his diagnosis is hypoglycaemia which IF amplifies. He told me to stop IF. I was on a 13-14 hour fast when this happened.

The right side of my head & neck were super sore last night. But I also had the tetanus jab on that side.

Any advice is appreciated 🙏

Edit - They also did an EKG and glucose test. I did have 1.5 teaspoons of honey before leaving the house so I wouldn't black out going down the stairs so glucose was in an okay range.

EDITED Need honest advice on IUDs because family’s disinformation is absolutely asinine

I (28F) have used IUDs for about 7 years now. Prior to this, I had abnormally heavy bleeding that would often make me so dizzy to the point of passing out, and I eventually later became anemic. As a result, I researched my options thoroughly from reputable medical sources and after much consideration, decided to get Mirena in the hopes of lightening my flow and reducing negative symptoms. Fortunately, I’m happy to say that it has significantly improved my life. My periods are light to nonexistent, and I don’t get that lightheartedness feeling anymore. I trusted my gut, listened to my body, did my research, and made an informed decision. It has felt so good to advocate for myself and take charge of my health.

However, the problem lies with my mother (53F), who is aware of my situation and vehemently disagrees that IUDs are a good idea, even despite me telling her how much it worked for my own personal situation. She has repeatedly shamed me in subtle (and not so subtle) ways for choosing this route, citing that “it’s gross and I’m building up toxins and old blood in my body since I’m not allowing myself to have a period and it’s just collecting since it can’t flow naturally.” EVEN THOUGH I know damn well that that’s not how birth control works in relation to periods. I’ve tried to explain to her that the hormones in an IUD halt the processes that lead to a normal cycle, so there’s no “rotting blood” making me septic, gain weight, smell, or feel sluggish (all things my mother listed word for word). My mom should know this, as she is a nurse for crying out loud. It just feel very irresponsible of her to spread health misinformation like this given her medical background. She has just rejected all sense of logic, as well as the context that different things work for different people. I might add that she is staunchly MAGA and falls deeply into the Christian/holistic wellness pipeline, which I feel like is contributing to her rejection of actual science. She believes that “God has a reason for natural biological processes” so we shouldn’t interfere even if it’s causing us harm. I feel like I am at the point where I can’t educate her on anything because it is all “fake news”, “liberal bias”, and she just distrusts doctors and prescription meds in general. As a result, it’s impossible for her to empathize with certain health challenges I have.

So I guess I just want to know, because I feel like I’m going crazy, is my mother right or is she spreading disinformation? Am I the ill-informed one? She’s making me doubt my own knowledge and my own experience. I just wanted to hear honest feedback & expertise, and thought about posting in the r/AITA subreddit or r/AskReddit but didn’t want to be flagged for discussing medical topics. Any reassurance or advice is much appreciated. Thank you so much!

(I also need to add for context that the reason this conversation even took place was because I had been talking to her about how a probiotic that we were both taking was causing an abnormal odor down there for me so I decided to stop taking it, given the research that’s it’s probably due to an overload of healthy bacteria accumulating and that I probably didn’t need it. But since it worked for her, she completely ignored this and attributed the odor to my birth control and the fact that I don’t have periods, which was such an unrelated pivot from the probiotics. This is my mother, you guys.)

Illness My dads hemoglobin was at 3

Posting because my dad’s hemoglobin was dropped to 3. I’m not sure what medical terms to use but doctors couldn’t figure out what was going on. He has transfusions every weekend now and it’s consistently dropping from 11 to 5 and lower. Any ideas what this could be? He did recently get a surgery for an ulcer in his stomach, but other than that not much else has been done. The day the doctors called to tell him his hemoglobin was 3, he was at work (he’s a mechanic) and they recommended picking him up but he insisted on driving himself and miraculously made it to the hospital. He’s a very hard headed man lol. This post is mostly for recommendations or advice as I can’t do much to convince him to look further into it.

Injury at what point should i be calling 911

tldr - i hurt my back at work and am at home now and can’t walk, breathe, or really do anything because of how bad my back hurts. should i call 911?

so i (20f) am a host at a restaurant and today at around 5 i was wiping a table and leaning over and then i stood up and felt a sharp pain in my mid right back, just under my rib cage. i had difficulty lifting things, moving my arm up, standing, bending over at all caused the pain to become significantly worse and felt like i was being stabbed in the back. i have minor scoliosis and have general back pain but this is new. i’ve been home from work for a few hours now and the pain hasn’t stopped, if anything it’s gotten worse. about a half hour ago now i was laying in bed on my side in one of the few positions that didn’t feel like there was a knife in my back, and i sat up on the edge of my bed to stand and use the bathroom. i coughed and the pain absolutely exploded, something shifted in my back and i was completely unable to move for about 15 minutes. eventually i was able to get up and take tiny steps to the living room and i almost called 911 while talking to my grandma (who i live with) and while making sure i wouldn’t have to pay for an ambulance with my insurance, i was able to move a little bit and stretch. with major difficulty, i was able to go to the bathroom, and i still can’t really walk or breathe without extreme pain. i am laying down now and scared to move again because even just laying on my back is excruciating and i don’t think i’ll be able to sleep. i am scared and don’t have anyone i can really ask for advice about this and my grandma is not being the most helpful (she can’t really do much), so i am turning to reddit to ask if you people think i need to go to the doctor or wait it out until morning? if i still have this pain in the morning, i will for sure be going to the hospital because i cannot do my job. any help is appreciated, thank you

sincerely, a terrified 20 year old with the worst medical anxiety on the planet

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Low abdominal pain

Hello! I need some advice as doctors aren't listening. I've been having a burning, tearing sensation in my abdomen right below my belly button as well as new stretch marks. The stretch marks themselves hurt (feel like they're tearing) and the deeper abdominal tearing feeling is also there. It also hurts to touch. Some doctors say I'm constipated and to take laxatives (I have) and others say it's just because I'm a woman. The rest of my stomach is also sensitive to touch and it hurts to lay on my stomach.

I feel like I'm losing my mind, I know something isn't right but no one is listening.

Relevant diagnosis: IBS, endometriosis

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Pain in abdomen

Hi there thanks for reading.

So I went out to eat Chinese hot pot with some friends this past Thursday evening. After my stomach started hurting and I thought I had to use the restroom.

I did. It was not solid, about 30 minutes later I started to get severe pain so where I was in the floor in a ball crying. I slept it off and felt a bit better Friday and I’ve been feeling a little bit better each day.

Now today, I eat some bread and broth. Simple things so for my body to digest and I got she severe pains again. But this time it seems more isolated on my right side.

Also, going along with the pain is just a bunch of pressure in the groin area. I’m not sure what to do. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

Digestion/Stomach/Bowels Chronic nausea and stomach upset

Ive reached a dead end so I'm here for advice.

About a year and a half ago I noticed that I would get nauseous after almost every time I eat. My stomach just seems to be constantly upset and I also feel hungry sometimes shortly after eating. I get some belching and stomach aches but it's mostly the nausea, constantly.

I went to see a gastro and they checked my gallbladder and did an upper endoscopy both showing nothing wrong. They put me on some prescription anti acid but it hasn't helped.

It has honestly really started having a negative effect on my relationship with food. Feeding myself feels like a chore since I feel bad almost every time.

What could this be? What should I check? The gastro just concluded that sometimes people get upset stomach a lot and said they tried everything. But this is so debilitating, I don't think I can live the rest of my life like this.
