This happened near me and was in the news. The bus is pulled all the way over to the right. There is a pretty large shoulder between the grass and the road. The elementary school child was getting off the bus and the driver grabbed her backpack as she was exiting to stop her from getting hit. Bus driver saved her. Bus driver won’t be getting fired. They found the 66 year old driver and he is in a lot of trouble. Not sure if they arrested him but he definitely got a bunch of tickets.

Can you link an article?

Bus driver is amazing

u/Kessed Apr 01 '24

I’m confused. Why isn’t the bus pulled over on the right? There shouldn’t be room for a car to pass there.

Maybe this is regional, but here the busses pull all the way over and the kids get off who live on that side of the street.

u/BigNigori Apr 02 '24

There's a bus on my route that has to make an immediate left after a stop on a two-lanes-each-way road, and that driver will get into the right lane and stop diagonally across both. I've always found that to be both amusing and smart.

u/TrainOfThought6 Apr 01 '24

Hard to see from this angle, but I can't see flashing reds either.

13

u/Joates87 Apr 01 '24

People in that big of a hurry definitely wouldn't let their tire touch grass....

3

u/Redditlikesballs Apr 02 '24

I don’t think it’s a 4 lane road. Another comment said they think it looks like they used the shoulder. Watching it again the car is right on the grass line so I think they’re right

11

u/needmorehardware Apr 01 '24

To me it looked like the car went onto the pavement maybe?

13

u/opalcherrykitt Apr 02 '24 edited Apr 02 '24

?? I've never seen a bus "pull over", where im from they typically just stay in the lane and let the kids cross over

edit: could you provide a video/visual example??

16

u/Kessed Apr 02 '24

That seems risky. Here the kids step directly onto the sidewalk or the grass part of the shoulder.

0

u/opalcherrykitt Apr 02 '24

we don't have sidewalks for most of the stops here, but none of them have ever pulled over for them to drop them off in the shoulder, though we're also in a rural area and there's rarely any cars on some routes. in the parts that do have a few cars on the road consistently they've always abided by the bus signals

1

u/Chloe_The_Cute_Fox Apr 03 '24

Someone else explained that the shoulder is pretty wide at this location.

0

u/zerbey Apr 02 '24

My kid's bus driver used to leave a gap too, it was basically to discourage drivers to not go around (she was in the center of a four lane road) and give the kids plenty of room. Everyone should be stopped anyway.

But knowing it’s a school bus a normal person wouldn’t drive that fast

-3

u/Nathaniel820 Apr 02 '24

They seem to be driving at the normal speed for that road. I can't speak for this area but where I live empty buses often park themselves on the sides of residential roads indefinitely without letting any kids out (I assume they're waiting for a specific time or something?), in which cases people legally pass them since they literally have to. If an active bus didn't put their sign or lights out I could see a lot of people passing them since they assumed it was just a parked bus.

1

u/Otjahe Apr 02 '24

I’m not saying it’s illegal but if that was me personally I would just drive slower and take an extra 5 seconds, because you never know.

Bus driver did nothing wrong here

Reds are tied to the door opening mechanism no? At least they are required to be where I am from.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

No. The yellow flashers get turned on as you are coming to a stop and pull over, the yellows turn into the reds and the stop sign and crossing arm in front of the bus when you open the door.

-13

u/Green_L3af Apr 02 '24 edited Apr 02 '24

You can't tell they didn't from the video. All the cars on other side stopped so appears to me the lights were on and stop sign was out.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

Wrong. Front crossing arm isnt out, and the red flashers are not on, they are on all sides of the bus

6

u/theberg512 Apr 02 '24

Does it have a front crossing arm? That's a fairly new addition, and none of the busses in my area have them

-4

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

Pretty sure any thomas or bluebird bus after 2013 has to have them as standard.

4

u/theberg512 Apr 02 '24

Sauce?

Because I've literally never seen one in person, just on video. And I'm a delivery driver with several schools on my route, and used to cover a route that delivered to the bus company, so I've seen every schoolbus in our local fleet. But maybe we just have old as shit equipment.

Edit: My own sauce that they are not required

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

"Pretty sure" didnt say it was 100%. Every bus i work with has them though.

1

u/Green_L3af Apr 02 '24

You want someone to lose their job but you're just "pretty sure"

You're just making stuff up. At this angle and with such grainy video, we can't even see the lights clearly. Again, why would the cars on the other side stop if the lights and stop sign weren't on? Since you mentioned apologizing, I'll take my apology. Thanks

8

u/ruthie-camden Apr 02 '24

If this is the same incident I read about recently, the bus driver saved the kid by pulling them back by their backpack when they saw the car coming

0

u/Green_L3af Apr 02 '24

Amazing. Yeah the people blaming the bus driver here are crazy

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

The bus driver did a good thing but deserves to lose their job. They arent pulled over, and they do not have their lights on. It is prodecure to have your lights on as you are coming to a stop and pull over, so when your door opens, the reds automatically come on and the crossing arm comes out.

-2

u/Green_L3af Apr 02 '24

No they don't. Blame the car that speeds around on the shoulder. You people blaming this bus driver are nuts. I'm wondering how people are so sure there are no lights from this grainy video and angle..

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

L take. The bus should be ON the shoulder. Know your shit if you're gonna pitch in, otherwise, bye. Also, the lights are more than easy to notice if you know what you're talking about

-1

u/Green_L3af Apr 02 '24 edited Apr 02 '24

Bus doesnt have to stop on shoulder. Lol No L here buddy. I dont think of reddit comments as W or L. That's something a loser would do. Keep making stuff up though

0

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

When letting children exit, yes they do.

1

u/Green_L3af Apr 02 '24 edited Apr 02 '24

How far over? You could pull to side of lane to let them on shoulder. You dont need to drive bus onto shoulder itself. Can you even see how far over they are in the video? No you can't. Again just making shit up.

Someone doesnt have a class B with any endorsements.

-2

u/Green_L3af Apr 02 '24

And that would be you.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

Correct, i actually have my class A❤️

-2

u/Green_L3af Apr 02 '24 edited Apr 02 '24

Doubtful considering how wrong you are about the bus

1

u/big6135 Apr 02 '24

You need to be as close as possible to the curb, and have your reds and stop deployed. People won’t usually pass on the right if they need to drive on somebody’s lawn or even worse climbing on the curb

27

u/CrowSnacks Apr 01 '24

In my community, we have had several children hit and killed by cars in school zones and passing stopped buses. It’s absolutely tragic. And this bus should be pulled to the side with its red stop lights on.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '24 edited Apr 03 '24

What's interesting to me is that where I live there's no such rule and these accidents doesn't seem to be as common, or at least they don't make it to the news. Kids actually have to learn how to cross the street and not fully trust drivers with their lives. Wonder if this law makes it safer or makes kids dumber.

Edit: the fact that kids leave the bus through a door in the front of the bus also contribute to accidents, since it's easier for them to appear out of nowhere from the front instead of from the back where drivers can see them.

14

u/Salt-Operation Apr 02 '24

Looks like the car went on the grass shoulder to go around and utilized the driveway to not lose control. What an ass!

14

u/LokiKamiSama Apr 02 '24

For y’all who said the bus doesn’t have flashers on, yes, it does. It’s hard to see but I can see red flashing lights on the back top of the bus. They are also pulled over. The stop sign that comes out? Is on the other side of the bus. If the red flashers are on I can safely assume the giant red stop sign was deployed. Also it doesn’t matter if the bus is pulled right up to the curb or not. No one should be passing the bus period. It might even be safer to stay centered in the lane. Why? So people don’t get the idea that “oh, they’re pulled over so I can go around them”. No. Also it didn’t appear that dude even slowed down. Driver should get their license taken and car impounded.

0

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

I'm looking at a row of a dozen school buses in my yard right now. They all have lights on the side. They turn on with the yellows and when the door opens, they turn into the reds and the stop sign comes out. You are supposed to see them from all sides, thats the point.

2

u/LokiKamiSama Apr 02 '24

My point is that from this video and where the camera is and how far away the camera is it’s hard to see the lights. School buses around here have lights on the front and on the back. They have an extending stop sign on the drivers side. Not all school buses are exactly the same. Some places have older models. Some have brand spanking new models. The point is, there were lights and this dude either chose to ignore them, or he was do old he couldn’t see them. Either way he needs his license revoked and his car impounded.

-1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

Both are at fault. I can dm you a pic of the side of a school bus right now. There are mandatory lights on the sides in my state at the very least

1

u/LokiKamiSama Apr 02 '24

But that’s not every state. That’s not every district. That’s not every school bus. What if the normal one was down for maintenance and this was a backup. The point is, the back of the bus that has lights has the lights on, flashing red. Car is clearly at fault. Period. Not to mention who sees a school bus that has stopped (or any vehicle for that matter) and go, hmmm I’m just gonna breeze past it on the right, where there’s a curb and grass, I stead of the left (when there’s no traffic). Dude did not slow down at all. No brakes were deployed at any time. School bus yes, dude in car no.

3

u/zerbey Apr 02 '24

For those that don't live in the US, you see a stopped school bus both lanes are required to stop at a safe distance and wait for them to offload (unless separated by a median, in which case proceed but still watch for kids crossing the road). Usually they have a stop sign with bright flashing red lights too. There is zero excuse for not doing this. I know in my state they have cameras to catch drivers, and also the driver has a radio so they can call it in. There's stiff fines if you're caught not doing this, and in this moron's case I can see the cop writing a few other tickets and even arresting him for reckless endangerment.

21

u/Mitridate101 Apr 01 '24

Bus driver gonna get to go to the unemployment office soon. No way they should have stopped what looks like to be 7ft from the kerb.

The car driver gonna get a ticket, most buses have cameras don't they?

4

u/JeffRVA Apr 02 '24

Some school systems have put cameras on the busses similar to red light/speed cameras that catch drivers illegally passing and mail them a ticket. The district I used to work for started doing this about five years ago and has them on all their buses now. It’s a $250 ticket and if you happen to pass several (in front a of a school for instance that doesn’t have a separate bus ramp) it’s $250 per bus. More districts need to do it.

-1

u/lying-therapy-dog Apr 01 '24

In america definitely no. Maybe you guys do busses different but theyre good

6

u/opalcherrykitt Apr 02 '24

no, some school busses have camera but theyre for inside the bus and not a dash cam (as far as im aware)

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

Lots of buses have 3 or more cameras with sound, and can see in the dark. Covering the driver, door, front of the bus, and passengers

2

u/theberg512 Apr 02 '24

This is the type of shit that is going to vary by school district and bus company. Some do, some don't.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '24

In america we definitely have cameras inside, and outside the buses, im looking at one right now. I work for a school district, working on buses

1

u/zerbey Apr 02 '24

Definitely yes. Inside and out.

2

u/cocainekayparathay Apr 02 '24

how is this ONLY MILDLY infuriating 😭

2

u/Sjoerd91 Apr 02 '24

Almost running over a kid is "mildly" infuriating?

1

u/Abrakadaniel_ Apr 02 '24

Another misplaced post

1

u/SchoolBusTicketAudit Jun 08 '24

First off it didn't almost run over the kid. On board camera showed child just getting out of seat while the doors opened. Second, The school bus did not operate correctly. Doors are not supposed to open until all vehicles come to a complete stop. Maybe your General Assembly should have codified your School Bus Operating Proceedures from the NY CDL and not just took donations to pass the camera law. I can debunk these all day long.

0

u/Cultural-Morning-848 Apr 02 '24

Nearly runs over kid is a bit of a stretch sidewalks are closer to roads than that

0

u/patiofurnature Apr 02 '24

I watched 3 times looking for the kid that almost got hit until I realized they meant the one 30+ feet away in his driveway.

-7

u/TravelingGonad Apr 02 '24

Having almost gotten smashed into by a bus driver I'm not putting it out of the realm of possibilities that the bus driver is at fault here.

-1

u/TheShredder102 RED Apr 02 '24

There's fault on both ends, but yeah the bus driver both failed to put on the stop sign and lights as well being clearly not on his side of the road

0

u/Ambitious_Speech5336 Apr 02 '24

guys they more than likely would’ve drove over the grass as well

0

u/Switch64 Apr 02 '24

Driver is a pos but let’s be honest. No kid was nearly ran over in this situation.

-2

u/Malpraxiss Apr 02 '24

They're not an idiot, they simply didn't care and had somewhere to be
