Help Needed/New Painter Am I good enough to do commissioned painting?

Am I good enough to do commissioned painting? I’ve had a few people in my life comment that I should do commissioned painting (and I received one job offer) but I’m not convinced. I’d say I’m pretty competent with contrast paints and basic shading, but concepts like Layering and edge highlighting still elude me.

Help Needed/New Painter Best ways to paint? Sharpies/tape/etc?

All will be Soulborg.

So technically not a new painter.

Going through my supply of Apple Barrel paints, sue me, I went on a bit of a splurge and got one too many mechs. I'd like to get a paint like the below - except black where its grey, and red its white, or white where its grey and blue where its white.

How can I best get clean lines? Can I use blue painter's tape or something? Or might it be better to use sharpies to delinate a border between the colors?

Help Needed/New Painter Best Black Airbrush Primer?

I know this question has been asked in the past before, but equally I think some companies have expanded a bit in the market in that time, formulations might have changed etc and after having a pot of Vallejo primer ruin half a 40K army, let’s just say I’m anxious.

Basically though as the title says, what have you found to currently be the best black airbrush primer?

I’ve used AK in the past and it wasn’t awful, but clogged up in the bottle a lot.

Vallejo I’m frankly never touching again.

I’ve heard good stuff about badger, but equally people questioning whether they’ve changed their formula. Also a bit tricky to get hold of for me.

ProAcryl is one that I’ve only heard recently but people seem to speak positively of. Seems relatively easy to get hold of.

Molotow has apparently been mentioned by a couple of YouTubers as a good option. It’s certainly an interesting one, and I know for some other things I prefer the offerings you can find outside the dedicated miniature painting lines.

So any thoughts on those above or any others is much appreciated.

Help Needed/New Painter Super Glue Games Workshop Deathmark head

Post image

I'm not sure if this would be the right place but it's the only one I can think of. Would there be a way for me to get rid of the super glue on this deathmark head so it's actually printable or would my best bet be just doing some immortals and restart? Sorry for the bad image quality, my phone wouldn't focus.

Help Needed/New Painter Airbrush thinner is actually coagulating my paints!

Thumbnail

I’ve just bought a bottle of AK Interactive thinner to use with my airbrush, and it’s actually clotting the paint in the cup. I’ve never known any thinners to do this, and I had to completely strip down the airbrush and deep clean it, something I’ve never had to do to such an extent as I’m meticulous with logging after it.

I’m using the thinners with AK paints, so there really should not be any issues. Has anyone run across this? Do you know if AK are aware of this or has anyone heard about this before? Has it happened to you with other brands? I’m so confused as to why it’s happening. See the last photo for the brush used to mix the paint in the cup, straight after mixing.

Help Needed/New Painter Questions from a new painter

Hey everyone,

so I just started getting into Warhammer 40k, and I recently discovered that I've quite enjoyed the painting portion of the hobby. I did have a question though that I cant really seem to find a straight answer online about so decided to come here and make a post.

  1. When I do a base coat (over primer), should I be doing the entire model? Like for example if I'm doing a space marine. Should I basically make him ALL blue, and then paint my detail over the blue? Or should I be trying to "paint within the lines" so to speak? Recently I've been doing the dry brush contrast method and basically avoiding spots I dont want my contrast color to hit, but I also realized that a lot of the time I'm just going over those spots with a base color anyways which should technically cover the contrast paint.
  2. How do you guys assemble your miniatures if you are painting pieces individually before assembly? Obviously sprue glue doesnt work if theres paint over the plastic as it doesnt have stuff to bond to, however I've noticed that whenever I used superglue gel, I seem to get this white dried glue layer around the parts where I added the glue and I basically have to repaint that but then it looks off because its there to cover the glue...I dont like it. But I have no idea how else to assemble post painting.
  3. I bought a decent airbrush, can I basically use any paint as long as it's thinned down? I'm painting a set of Dark Angels and while I went with the contrast route for the Intercessors I want to do a more solid base coat with Caliban Green for my HellBlasters. If question 1 is answered how I think it will be answered, then that means I can go over the unit with caliban green with my airbrush I'm hoping.

Anyways thanks for any help you guys offer. Loving this hobby so far and I love what a lot of you can do with a few cans of paint and a steady hand.

Hive Tyrant that I painted with the slap chop method
unfinished intercessor also using the slap chop method but tried to "paint in the lines"

Help Needed/New Painter Need some help deciding on magnets

I need some help deciding on magnets.

New to painting minis and even newer at magnetising, meaning I have never done it. Been looking to magnetise some Warhammer minis and I’m not sure what magnets to buy. Not sure what size would be best and where to get them from. Are the army painter ones really good? And how can I decide the size of the minis.

For reference, I want to magnetise Azrael and a Repulsor.

Started this mini a few months ago and recently decided to finish. I haven't practiced NMM a lot but I'm happy with how this turned out (try to ignore the swords). I tried a glowing hot metal effect with the mace on the end of his tail that I'm very happy with. I definitely wouldn't rebuke any advice for OSL and NMM if anyone has any

Help Needed/New Painter About varnishes and their finishes—do I really need all of them?

Sorry for my ignorance, I'm just starting out in the painting hobby and buying supplies. I got a beginner's kit from AK with paints, mediums, and now I'm checking out varnishes. I've read a ton of stuff and comparisons, and I chose AK because of their color range, so I'm basically sticking with their products for compatibility. I looked around here, on YouTube, and on Google for any comparative image of the different types of varnish but couldn't find one. I understand that each has a different level of shine, but does anyone have a more specific image of the AK varnishes? I just can't visualize exactly how shiny (or matte) each one is to decide which one to get, and I don't want to end up buying four different varnishes just to test.

Hello,

I‘m struggling with putting those white stripes on the blue helmets of those guys.

In all references it looks great but mine look wrong. I realize that the white paint might not be thin enough but I‘m not sure.

Thanks for any feedback and maybe ideas to save those guys.

Help Needed/New Painter How to avoid “grainy” metal paint?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I got myself Vallejo Liquid Metal (White Gold) paint. I mixed it with some alcohol and painted it on. I got mixed feelings. I think if the paint wasn’t “grainy” I would have liked it more. I didn’t add the wash yet, maybe it will fix the issue. However, I am still curious if this grainy feel could be avoided from the beginning. Also, I recently tried Vallejo Silver primer. Although, by accident I thought it was a black primer, I was pleasantly surprised. That primer wasn’t grainy, it was perfect. Perfect. Down to the last minute detail.

New to painting, and not great with taking photos. This mini is nice to look at from like a foot away and looks less messy, but I’m having trouble making a picture of it look decent. Maybe the paint just is that messy - particularly the blends.
