Discussion Older Redditors, do you remember what it was like seeing Toy Story in theaters in 1995?

I'm working on a video series about every Pixar movie in order and Toy Story was the only Pixar movie to predate me, so I want to know what you remember of seeing it in theaters. Sorry if I'm calling anyone out for being old or anything but I just want to know how it felt watching the first ever CGI movie in theaters was like.

Discussion Shyamalan's "Trap" feels like one giant nepotism project.

It's not just about the fact that his daughter stars in it but the fact that she plays a huge pop star who sings for most of the first half of the movie. Not just for a few scenes but some parts of the movie feel like a full on concert film with her music. With that being said the first half of the movie had a decent build up however the second half of the movie is just a stitched together incomprehensible mess with constant ass pulls.

I kinda wonder if it was made to try to launch his daughter's music career

Discussion Have you ever felt there are some movies you are "supposed to like"?

I've just finished watching The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari and while I recognize that it may have been important in launching German Expressionism and the set designs were indeed interesting I just found the movie so unbearably boring.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't mean to diminish the importance of this movie in any way, I just think it probably hasn't aged well; but what was my surprise to search for reviews about the film and see everyone saying that it holds up to this day and it still works just as well as a horror movie.

Like, seriously? Did we watch the same movie?

Anyways, have you ever felt like me and thought everyone arround you was being peer-pressured into praising without reservations a film that you thought was flawed?

Or mind bending movies? something like the sixth sense is too much of a give away. i want to be confused abt what the twist is or maybe an up to interpretation ending

Discussion Robert Downey Jr. turns 60 years old: Rank his best performances ever

Robert Downey Jr., one of the greatest actors and movie stars of our time, turns 60 years old.

In honor of this special birthday, rank what do you believe to be his best performances ever.

I'll start:

  1. Chaplin
  2. Tropic Thunder
  3. Oppenheimer
  4. Iron Man* (Only the first movie, not all the MCU appearances)
  5. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
  6. Sherlock Holmes
  7. Natural Born Killers
  8. Zodiac

*I only restricted the rank to his film career, i still have to watch The Sympathizer or his appearances in the TV Show Ally MacBeal.

So what's your list? What do you think are his best performances ever until now)? It can be a top 5 list or a top 7 list, even a top 10.

Sound off in the comments section down below.

Discussion Since Return to Oz (1985) is based mostly on the books, technically it can be seen as a sequel to any Wizard of Oz adaptation. This includes Muppet Wizard of Oz.

Basically what I’m saying is that Return to Oz is canonically a sequel to Muppet Wizard of Oz. This is particularly interesting when you consider that Jim Henson’s son Brian was in both movies. He voiced Jack Pumpkinhead in RTO and puppeteered Sal Minnella in Muppet Wizard of Oz. Just something I realized and thought I would share.

Discussion Why did Yukovich do what he does at the end of To Live and Die in L.A.??

I just watched this movie for the first time and I don't know why I'd never heard of it before or even really recognized the title track by Wang Chung before John Mulaney started using it as his intro music for his new Netflix talk show but it led me to the movie and I really enjoyed it. Definitely an unexpected ending as well. What Yukovich does at the end felt really out of character and outta left field, is it not? He spent the whole film trying to get Chance in trouble behind his back. Are we supposed to feel like he now thinks that the only way to get stuff done is to bend the rules like Chance did? Seems a bit tragic either way. For Ruth of course but for him as well.

Discussion Question about choosing what movie to watch

Hello! I'm a media studies student and as part of a class project, I’m looking into how people choose what movies to watch. So I’m really curious when you’re about to watch a movie, what do you base your decision on? Mood, genre, reviews, recommendations, actors or maybe something different? Would love to hear your thoughts.

Question What movie am I thinking of??

Cant find this movie for the life of me. I remember the plot being a couple in a tropical location, taking a drink / substance at a bar and then seeing a video of themselves hurting eachother. They both react very odd and the movie ends with some super weird ending. It is a horror movie. What movie an i thinking of?!?!?!

Discussion What moment for a movie or TV show do you think about when doing a specific task?

I was just thinking about this in the shower because so often when I close my eyes to wash the shampoo out I think of an scene from the tv show Bones when blood came out of the shower head due to a dead body in the water tower. Same as when I eat a pie or pastry with whipped cream I always think of that one scene from Inglorious Bastards.

Discussion I wish Disney would go back to what they are best at: Fairy Tales!!!!

There are so many folktales, legends, and stories that Disney is fantastic at adapting into movies and musicals. They could usher in a new renaissance if they just start doing what they are good at again. Other studios, like Dreamworks, Sony, and Pixar are better at creating new ideas, but when you look at Disney's track record on those.... ehhhhh. Wish sucked because it was new, but Frozen, Moana, and Tangled all came from somewhere and were adapted and are loved.

Let's be clear real quick. I don't expect them to go back to 2D (though I wish they would). The style doesn't matter as much as the story and music behind it.

I'm just saying that they still have a ton of stories to bring to life and could make some BANK and create some real ART again!!!! I'm thinking they should do Hansel and Gretel next. What about you guys? What fairy tale would you guys like to see?

Discussion We're due for another star-studded race & chase movie!

We could be due for another Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Cannonball Run, Rat Race style movie, packed with actors big and small, and cameos galore. It's been 24 years since Rat Race released and many new actors have come to fame since that time.

Is this type of movie even feasible in this day and age? Is the humor outdated? And also, who would you cast to play the leads?

Discussion Scene about subjectivity over objectivity?

I once saw a scene in a movie or TV show that really stuck with me, but for whatever reason I can't recall the film or show. Hopefully someone out there can help me out!

Seems like it was some sort of police show or something and the new guy arrives to a crime scene with an older detective and says something about how they have to maintain their objectivity. The older cop (maybe cops? Not certain) then explains that they are actually in their jobs for their experience, intuition and judgment... for their SUBjectivity.

This must have stuck with at least ONE other person. Any ideas? It's been driving me nuts for months.

Spoilers Can someone explain to me the ending of Serpico (1973)

Can someone please explain to me the whole ,,deal" at the end of the movie when he got shot? At first I thought they are going to bust a deal with corrupt cops, where they split their money, but I guess I'm wrong. I really liked the movie, I think it's maybe top 3 roles by Pacino, but not understanding the end just drives me crazy....

Discussion Examples of movies that hide the plot/plot twists early on?

To start, YES I HAVE READ THE RULES AND KNOW THERE IS A RULE ABOUT SPOILERS. If, despite the way I'm setting this post up, it is considered breaking the rule, I apologize and ask that it is promptly deleted. I'd like to see examples of movies that in one way or another reveal major/minor plot twists or general plot beats early on in clever ways. I'll give an example as the movie that led to me being curious of other movies, and suggest that all answers be set up in a two-tiered fashion. Put the movie title in one spoiler, then the answer in another spoiler. That way people can peruse this thread while skipping movies they haven't seen yet. Obviously this will still give away that there is a plot twist, but still. I think this is a fun topic and hope others agree. I'll start, and remember the first spoiler is the movie title and the second is the explanation of how it fits this topic.

The Thing (1982)

In the opening scene when the men in the helicopter are chasing after the dog, they are yelling things in Norwegian. When the dog starts licking one of the guys, the one that the Norwegian accidentally shoots, he yells, in Norwegian, "Get the hell away from that thing. That's not a dog, it's some sort of thing! It's imitating a dog, it isn't real! Get away you idiots!" As cool as this detail is, I imagine it's a bummer for anyone who watched the movie knowing the language. Then again the plot is in the trailers and stuff so unless you went into the movie completely blind, it's not a big deal.

Looking forward to more examples :)

Question What was the best 'NY City' movie ever made? For clarity, I mean gives you more of the genuine 'feel' of NY City.

Upvotes

For me it's The Paper. With a truly stellar cast, great story (if compressed into just 24 hours), nicely interwoven storylines, funny, empathic and just captures so many of the facets that make NY a pretty unique city.

I saw it in NY, on my own as it was during the day when everyone else was working, when it first came out. I knew naff all about it before going in and came out loving it.

Discussion What makes Das Boot so darn good?

To me (and a lot of others of course) Das Boot is in the top 3 of whatever list you can think of. I rewatch it maybe every 3-5 years or so and every time I am blown away about that this movie from 1981 not feels old one bit in the technical department.

Except the exceptional direction, execution and cast, What makes it remarkable is that is not just "another great war movie" where you at some point, directly or indirectly will be fed with morals, and the movie will make sure that by the end of it, you will know the good guys from the bad ones. I don´t say it is necessarily a bad thing but I think it is much more difficult to make a ww2 movie that will not in the slightest give a hint of the moral shortcomings of the germans (or the japanese).

This is I think the core to what makes Das Boot a unicorn. It balances a really touchy subject so masterfully that no one can blame it for being either too political and pretentious, but it´s not lame and totally avoiding on the other side either. It just feels very real and honest.

So what is your take on Das Boot?

Question Term for Single Frame of Movie that Tells a Story

Looking for the term used by filmmakers to explain a single shot that's intentionally composed to highlight the elements in the film to explain the story

The way I had it explained to me was a single frame that could be cut out and shown to someone, and they would have a great idea of what the movie was about. I believe it may be a French term, but cannot remember

Mise-en-scene comes to mind, but I don't believe it full explains what I'm getting at — Thanks for any help you can provide!

Question Question on “13 Going on 30”

In the film it’s revealed that Jenna has been leaking ideas to Sparkle’s editor in chief, Trish. One of her notes to Jenna says:

“Jenna, Thanks for all your great ideas. This is the best yet. You'll make a great editor in chief at Sparkle.”

Lucy cashes in on this discovery by giving Jenna’s big idea for Poise’s makeover to Trish and she leaves Poise to become editor in chief at Sparkle.

Here’s why I’m confused: If Trish was already editor in chief, why would she want to hand over that position to someone else? Maybe it’s assumed she would then assume (or create for herself) some other, higher title at the magazine?

I know, I know…. Doesn’t matter in the whole scheme of the movie. I happen to be a magazine editor, so I noticed it. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this—or understood it. Or did I miss something?

Thanks!

Discussion Crocodile Dundee (1986) is a film of its time. 80s Film nostalgia. It got two sequels. What did you most like about the film?

It's insane how successful Crocodile Dundee was back in the 80s. 174 million dollars domestically.

I didn't realize Paul Hogan was a comedian or his character was supposed to be funny. I still had a great time watching Crocodile Dundee and I am bitter Linda Koslowzski never got a break outside of Crocodile Dundee. He got the credit yet she's the one who dominated the last act as her character runs for the Train station.

A heartwarming film, personally.

Question How scary is the movie "The Substance?"

How scary is "The Substance" and how intense are the bone cracking moments, especially with its hyperrealistic and grotesque imagery, and does it live up to its body horror genre? I'm curious to know because i have a phobia of bone cracking. Are the bone cracking scenes frequent?Do you think someone who doesn't like bone cracking should watch? My friend is making me watch it and I don't think I can get out of it. Please help!!!
