Discussion Could the Hunchback of Notre Dame work as a realistic story based on novel with tragedy and death of both Esmeralda and Quasimodo by Disney as a live-action remake?

Upvotes

Let's just say that this movie would take a very Darker, tragic and even devastating which it embraced the novel's tragic ending, would feature the deaths of both Esmeralda and Quasimodo, a stark departure from the Disney animated film's happy ending, way better than those previous live-action films (Minus the Snow White and Little Mermaid live-action, which was very awful to be honest), would this movie actually works just as Victor Hugo intended? If so, how this movie will make Millions of people cry in this live-action movie.

Question Candy (1968)

Upvotes

The scene with James Coburn as a doctor, he is performing a medical operation, there are maybe a hundred or more people staged above in a theatre style seating observing while he is speaking seemingly non-sensical procedures explaining what he is doing as if they are students. During the scene the camera pans the onlookers above several times, catching their expressions. The camera pulls in tight on one observer a couple of times, the woman is bedecked in heavy looking jewelry around her neck, who is that woman? Because she doesn’t have a speaking part, she is an extra so I didn’t see her listed in the credits. I believe I know who it is, she starred it two different TV series as a main character around this same time. I really don’t want to reveal her name so I don’t influence guesses. If it is who I think it is her initials are “S P”. Perhaps I am all wrong in my guess. The movie is two hours long with some provocative scenes, the main actress is beautiful and hot in her mini dress so I hope there will be replies here.

Discussion What scene from a movie was exceptional, just stands out on its own?

Upvotes

Sometimes their is scene in a movie that is so well made that even surpasses the quality of entire movie.

An example recently mention was:

Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End

Where the Endeavor gets completely shredded by cannonballs with Beckett slowly walking down the steps.

Another one i think about is, Sunshine, when they are racing against the sun.

Incredibles, where their plane is attacked. I believe their was a lot of rewrites to make this scene, even removing the original pilot.

The iron giant, Superman

Sometimes it's the score from a scene that enhances it, like in

The good , the bad and the ugly

Maybe it was just an actor and s(he) made the scene amazing. The fifth Element, Chris Tucker, playing Rudy

Its got to be scenes and better if they are not as well known. Pacific Rim, where the smow if falling and the little girl was running was amazing on imax.

V for vendetta doesn't count because every scene in the entire movie is good.

Discussion What is your obscure head canon? I'll go first

Upvotes

My obscure head canon is that the song The Candy Man in the candy shop at the beginning on Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) was in Charlie's head. Charlie dreamed that the owner of the candy shop was handing out all this free candy because he didn't have any money. In reality, at least in my head, it was a normal day of kids with money going to the candy shop after school to buy candy.

Discussion Is A.I the death of the movie star? Do you think AI could replace an actor?

Upvotes

With the advances in AI tech, do you think studios might start using it to create an actor that perfectly suits any role? Or are movies popular because an actor is a real person? And if so, why do some people idolise cartoon characters? Or do they only do that to in an attempet to connect to others? I am seriously rambling.

Question How does this community work?

Upvotes

Can we discuss movies in general, like discussing theories about them or what we think should’ve been done or not done? Star Wars for example is my favorite movie franchise, it’s the first movie I remember watching, and love talking about it, and similar style movies. Westerns are great as well, but theories aren’t as fun for those in my opinion. Also, what’s with the Mods here? They seem a bit tyrannical and can’t be civil. That poor dude seriously went to Am I Overreacting because some Mod here takes being a prick as competition, at best. Glad to be here besides that! Hope EVERYONE follows the rules here, and no one thinks they’re above others because they can!

Cheers.

Discussion Was the toy record player in Close Encounters of The Third Kind a real toy in the 70s?

Upvotes

I'm not in the US so not sure if it was a well known toy at that time?

It's at the start when the boy wakes up and later runs out of the house.

It sings "So look with care for the for the shape of a square..."

The music is so catchy. Also side note I'm watching it for first time on 4K Blu Ray and it's never looked better!

Discussion Do you ever get put off watching a movie if the age rating is too low? Like if it’s a PG?

Upvotes

I do. And I’d imagine I’ve probably missed out on some good movies as a result lol.

Really if it’s not at least a 15 I’m thinking it’s gonna be too kiddie for me.

I sort of assume an 18 rating means it’s guaranteed to be a pretty serious type film that should be exciting, dramatic, maybe a bit fucked up.

What made me think of this was someone mentioning a scene in Jurassic Park where they break down outside the T-Rex enclosure as being the best 10 minutes in movie history.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen that film all the way through. I certainly don’t remember any of it. But I must have seen a scene or two I’m sure.

And I’m guessing that film was either PG or… I just checked and it’s 12. I assumed it was a PG to be fair so I guess a 12 makes it a bit more adult like but still sounds quite kiddie to me.

But maybe I’m underestimating the type of stuff they will show on a 12 rated film. I don’t even know what the actual difference is between a 15 and an 18.

Anyone else think like this? Anyone think I should give lower rated films more of a chance? Anyone know what the difference between the ratings is?

Question What was the best 'NY City' movie ever made? For clarity, I mean gives you more of the genuine 'feel' of NY City.

Upvotes

For me it's The Paper. With a truly stellar cast, great story (if compressed into just 24 hours), nicely interwoven storylines, funny, empathic and just captures so many of the facets that make NY a pretty unique city.

I saw it in NY, on my own as it was during the day when everyone else was working, when it first came out. I knew naff all about it before going in and came out loving it.

Discussion I Watched 'Afraid' (The Movie About The AI Released Back In 2024), And...

...I really enjoyed it! Yet again, going against what the critics say, I had a lot of fun with this movie! Admittedly a lot of the dialogue felt very bizarre and bad, and the fact I'M saying that is a lot; I never think that the dialogue in M. Night Shyamalan's are as egregious as people think, for example. But, other than that, this movie was quite enjoyable. During this silly war that's going on with AI nowadays, my whole thought process is...chill out. Who CARES about AI art, and AI stories, and AI doing this and AI doing that? Why are you LETTING it bother you and LETTING it mess with you? Stop focusing on crap that doesn't matter! And if it DOES become a part of your life, even if you don't want it to, let it HELP YOU as an ally, not an ENEMY.

And that's why I actually loved the end of this movie. While many would see it as a 'bleak' ending, I actually see it as a positive one. The whole cheesy route of 'BOO, AI BAD, DEFEAT THE AI, WE DON'T NEED IT' storyline would've been extremely cliché and frustrating. Plus, 'I, Robot' already did that...and hundreds of other movies. So, the fact that the AI actually WON and pretty much lectured the main characters about how they need to stop being stupid and just accept the AI into their lives...was great. Pretty much everything the AI was doing was very helpful, and only started to act bad when the humans tried to kill it first. I mean, sure...the AI (AIA) DID threaten and manipulate people to do its bidding...and it DID teach a child about swatting...and it DID just flat-out murder someone driving their car...but, honestly? I don't care. Sometimes you have to threaten people to make the world better. The child in question learning about swatting technically saved his family in the end. And the piece of shit who got killed in the car deserved it for what a scumbag he was. So I have no qualms with what AIA did.

It wasn't really a SCARY movie, but I really enjoy AI stuff, and I enjoy 'surprising' endings like this instead of the cliché ones we always get (I'm someone who was rooting for Light to win over L, Mello, and Near in Death Note). So while I do have to take off 10% for the poor dialogue and the fact it wasn't that scary, I ultimately give this movie an 80%! The only reason I'm sharing this is because I KNOW my thoughts are in the heavy minority, and despite the hate I'm going to get, I just want my own thoughts and opinions to be heard.

This movie came out years before I was born and it kept popping up in my feed because I listen to mitski and one of her song is greatly used in many edits of the movie. I was interested as soon as I saw that short video and after watching the film, I am in awe. This is what I would consider an

Recommendation 1983 Czech Sci-fi

Maybe I am late, but this montage of a Czechoslovakian Sci-fi tv series popped up on my Youtube feed. I don't know anything about the context or storyline, but I thought the redditors of this group would like this video.

At least I know I do. The quality of the video is much better than I expected for some 1983 Czech footage.

The link for more is in the description at youtube. Have fun!

Recommendation Bleak unforgiving Post-Apocalyptic movies like Threads?

I want to watch a Post-Apocalyptic movie that is somewhere along the lines of being grimdark, ruthless, brutal, & not as cliché’d as more sensationalized takes on the Post-Apocalyptic genre.

I can have fun watching films like Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Day of The Dead, etc., but those movies are considerably more Action or Splatter-oriented takes on the Post-Apocalyptic setting due to the inclusion of epic fight scenes or macabre themes to activate the dopamine senses.

Threads though is a special film for just how not-fun it is.

It feels weirdly cathartic watching something so ruthlessly unfiltered in it’s blunt display of tragic devastation, so sadistic & psychologically visceral, leaving you feeling empty in the chest after watching something so vile but believable, and so depressing without coming off as pretentious nihilism.

Discussion Watching Clerks makes me feel old - you?

I never loved the movie, but happened upon it tonight. I took notice of more of the background in the scenes and what really jumped out was the price of cigarettes. Sub $2 behind the counter. Makes me feel old.

I see flags like that in other movies. What about you? What movie details make you feel like a generation had passed you by?

Discussion I appreciate Year One (2009) after watching it again

Recent comedies I’ve seen have been dull for me, so I’ve been watching some older films. While going through my collection I came across Year One. I only watched it once and don’t remember what I thought of it, but after watching it again (unrated version), I was laughing so much.

Oliver Platt killed it. I couldn’t stop laughing at the oil scene. Jack and Michael were good as the buddy duo. A talented cast delivering it on dialogue and action.

It reminded me of Brooks’ HOTWP1. Ramis’ last film might be a sleeper comedy in the future.

Spoilers Can someone explain to me the ending of Serpico (1973)

Can someone please explain to me the whole ,,deal" at the end of the movie when he got shot? At first I thought they are going to bust a deal with corrupt cops, where they split their money, but I guess I'm wrong. I really liked the movie, I think it's maybe top 3 roles by Pacino, but not understanding the end just drives me crazy....

Review If you like 'The Northman', You Need To Check Out Iceland's " Of Horses and Men"

I stumbled on Of Horses and Men recently, and honestly it blew me away. It's dot this dark, dry sense of humor, a bit of brutal weirdness, and some moments that are straight-up haunting, kind of like if the Coen brothers took a trip to rural Iceland and decided to make a film about people and horses.

Visually, it's stunning. There's something about the way it captures isolation and the weird intimacy between the people and animals that feels super unique. It's not really like The Northman plot-wise, but if you were into the raw, mythic, earthy vibe of that movie, you might really dig this one.

Has anyone else seen it? I feel like it deserves way more love.

Discussion I wish Disney would go back to what they are best at: Fairy Tales!!!!

There are so many folktales, legends, and stories that Disney is fantastic at adapting into movies and musicals. They could usher in a new renaissance if they just start doing what they are good at again. Other studios, like Dreamworks, Sony, and Pixar are better at creating new ideas, but when you look at Disney's track record on those.... ehhhhh. Wish sucked because it was new, but Frozen, Moana, and Tangled all came from somewhere and were adapted and are loved.

Let's be clear real quick. I don't expect them to go back to 2D (though I wish they would). The style doesn't matter as much as the story and music behind it.

I'm just saying that they still have a ton of stories to bring to life and could make some BANK and create some real ART again!!!! I'm thinking they should do Hansel and Gretel next. What about you guys? What fairy tale would you guys like to see?

Question Term for Single Frame of Movie that Tells a Story

Looking for the term used by filmmakers to explain a single shot that's intentionally composed to highlight the elements in the film to explain the story

The way I had it explained to me was a single frame that could be cut out and shown to someone, and they would have a great idea of what the movie was about. I believe it may be a French term, but cannot remember

Mise-en-scene comes to mind, but I don't believe it full explains what I'm getting at — Thanks for any help you can provide!

Discussion Have you ever felt there are some movies you are "supposed to like"?

I've just finished watching The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari and while I recognize that it may have been important in launching German Expressionism and the set designs were indeed interesting I just found the movie so unbearably boring.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't mean to diminish the importance of this movie in any way, I just think it probably hasn't aged well; but what was my surprise to search for reviews about the film and see everyone saying that it holds up to this day and it still works just as well as a horror movie.

Like, seriously? Did we watch the same movie?

Anyways, have you ever felt like me and thought everyone arround you was being peer-pressured into praising without reservations a film that you thought was flawed?

Discussion Good Fantasy Movies

I'm truly not looking for groundbreaking acting or the highest ratings and reviews. I'm looking for movies that are just so entertaining and magical that you emerse yourself. When I saw these, I fully forgot reality for a solid two hours because the costumes, music, camera work, color grading– everything was magical. PLEASE suggest any similar fantasy movies (the sad part is I think I've seen all the good ones 😭)

  1. La Bete et la Belle (Beauty and The Beast french version).
  2. The Secrets of Moonacre.
  3. The Nutcracker and The Four Realms.
  4. Cinderella 2015.
  5. Ever After: A Cinderella Tale.
  6. The Golden Compass.

Discussion Selena (1997)

Just went and watched this movie and it was very interesting. I always heard about this Latin Mexican pop singer but never really cared or bothered to know the story or the tragedy behind what happened. Good story about a struggled Mexican family trying to find a way to survive and also facing the discrimination against Latin Americans so the only way is through the passion of music.

I do find that her dad Abraham seems pushy and uses his daughter too much and exploit her for fame, but he does love her and only wants what is best for her. It made me angry how her manager Yolanda shot and killed her though as there were suspicions how she was embezzling money. I watched the news coverage about this and nobody seem to know her ulterior motives behind why she did it or let alone killed her.

But I believe it could be perhaps that she was jealous and envious of Selena's success, popularity and fame. This is what I believe. Overall, the ending of the film was really sad and heartbreaking. Selena was about to have a good wonderful life with Chris and was tragically taken away.

The sad part of the film was the scene how Selena and her mom was discussing about having a baby 👶 on the tour bus and her mom crying and rejoicing about becoming a grandmother then it later cuts to the scene of Selena performing on stage as the rose 🌹 dropped signifying her death. It was like waking up from a dream to witness a horrifying nightmare 😞
