Discussion Was the toy record player in Close Encounters of The Third Kind a real toy in the 70s?

Upvotes

I'm not in the US so not sure if it was a well known toy at that time?

It's at the start when the boy wakes up and later runs out of the house.

It sings "So look with care for the for the shape of a square..."

The music is so catchy. Also side note I'm watching it for first time on 4K Blu Ray and it's never looked better!

Discussion Good Fantasy Movies

I'm truly not looking for groundbreaking acting or the highest ratings and reviews. I'm looking for movies that are just so entertaining and magical that you emerse yourself. When I saw these, I fully forgot reality for a solid two hours because the costumes, music, camera work, color grading– everything was magical. PLEASE suggest any similar fantasy movies (the sad part is I think I've seen all the good ones 😭)

  1. La Bete et la Belle (Beauty and The Beast french version).
  2. The Secrets of Moonacre.
  3. The Nutcracker and The Four Realms.
  4. Cinderella 2015.
  5. Ever After: A Cinderella Tale.
  6. The Golden Compass.

Recommendation 1983 Czech Sci-fi

Maybe I am late, but this montage of a Czechoslovakian Sci-fi tv series popped up on my Youtube feed. I don't know anything about the context or storyline, but I thought the redditors of this group would like this video.

At least I know I do. The quality of the video is much better than I expected for some 1983 Czech footage.

The link for more is in the description at youtube. Have fun!

Discussion We're due for another star-studded race & chase movie!

We could be due for another Mad Mad Mad Mad World, Cannonball Run, Rat Race style movie, packed with actors big and small, and cameos galore. It's been 24 years since Rat Race released and many new actors have come to fame since that time.

Is this type of movie even feasible in this day and age? Is the humor outdated? And also, who would you cast to play the leads?

Discussion What movies were saved by studio interference, that most people don't realize?

2.1k Upvotes

Hey there. So I have recently done a post in this subreddit asking about movies that were ruined by studio interference and meddling. And I got a comment saying that the opposite isn't talked about enough. It got me thinking what are some movies that were saved by studio interference/meddling. The best examples I found of studio interference making a movie better were: Predator (1987) The Studio insisted that the movie did not have enough gun fight scenes. As a result, McTiernan added the scene where the team looses it shoot their guns off into the jungle in every direction.

Apocalypse Now (1979) The studio insisted that Francis Ford Coppola, reduce the run time by an hour. So he edited out a number of scenes. If you have ever seen Redux you know how good of an idea it was.

The Warriors (1979): The studio made Walter Hill remove the comic book panels that he had originally put in the movie. The director’s cut reinstates the comic-book scenes that Hill wanted and they just don't work.

Alien (1979) The studio (producers Walter Hill and David Giler) added in the character of Ash, which original co-writer Dan O’Bannon felt was a completely unnecessary addition. If They Hadn’t Stepped In: We wouldn’t have had Ash, which means we potentially wouldn’t have had the whole Weyland-Yutari conspiracy plot.

So with these examples out of the way, does anyone have any other examples of movies being saved like this?

Question Question on “13 Going on 30”

In the film it’s revealed that Jenna has been leaking ideas to Sparkle’s editor in chief, Trish. One of her notes to Jenna says:

“Jenna, Thanks for all your great ideas. This is the best yet. You'll make a great editor in chief at Sparkle.”

Lucy cashes in on this discovery by giving Jenna’s big idea for Poise’s makeover to Trish and she leaves Poise to become editor in chief at Sparkle.

Here’s why I’m confused: If Trish was already editor in chief, why would she want to hand over that position to someone else? Maybe it’s assumed she would then assume (or create for herself) some other, higher title at the magazine?

I know, I know…. Doesn’t matter in the whole scheme of the movie. I happen to be a magazine editor, so I noticed it. Just wondering if anyone else noticed this—or understood it. Or did I miss something?

Thanks!

Spoilers Can someone explain to me the ending of Serpico (1973)

Can someone please explain to me the whole ,,deal" at the end of the movie when he got shot? At first I thought they are going to bust a deal with corrupt cops, where they split their money, but I guess I'm wrong. I really liked the movie, I think it's maybe top 3 roles by Pacino, but not understanding the end just drives me crazy....

Discussion What makes Das Boot so darn good?

To me (and a lot of others of course) Das Boot is in the top 3 of whatever list you can think of. I rewatch it maybe every 3-5 years or so and every time I am blown away about that this movie from 1981 not feels old one bit in the technical department.

Except the exceptional direction, execution and cast, What makes it remarkable is that is not just "another great war movie" where you at some point, directly or indirectly will be fed with morals, and the movie will make sure that by the end of it, you will know the good guys from the bad ones. I don´t say it is necessarily a bad thing but I think it is much more difficult to make a ww2 movie that will not in the slightest give a hint of the moral shortcomings of the germans (or the japanese).

This is I think the core to what makes Das Boot a unicorn. It balances a really touchy subject so masterfully that no one can blame it for being either too political and pretentious, but it´s not lame and totally avoiding on the other side either. It just feels very real and honest.

So what is your take on Das Boot?

Question How does this community work?

Upvotes

Can we discuss movies in general, like discussing theories about them or what we think should’ve been done or not done? Star Wars for example is my favorite movie franchise, it’s the first movie I remember watching, and love talking about it, and similar style movies. Westerns are great as well, but theories aren’t as fun for those in my opinion. Also, what’s with the Mods here? They seem a bit tyrannical and can’t be civil. That poor dude seriously went to Am I Overreacting because some Mod here takes being a prick as competition, at best. Glad to be here besides that! Hope EVERYONE follows the rules here, and no one thinks they’re above others because they can!

Cheers.

Question Term for Single Frame of Movie that Tells a Story

Looking for the term used by filmmakers to explain a single shot that's intentionally composed to highlight the elements in the film to explain the story

The way I had it explained to me was a single frame that could be cut out and shown to someone, and they would have a great idea of what the movie was about. I believe it may be a French term, but cannot remember

Mise-en-scene comes to mind, but I don't believe it full explains what I'm getting at — Thanks for any help you can provide!

Discussion Looking for Fast-Paced Mystery Thrillers with Intense Twists!

Hey everyone!

I'm on the hunt for fast-paced mystery thrillers—the kind that grip you from start to finish, keep you guessing, and hit you with mind-blowing reveals. I love movies where a detective (or an amateur investigator) is piecing clues together, leading to shocking twists and turns along the way.

Some movies I’ve already watched and loved: Prisoners, Gone Girl, Se7en, Searching, Missing.

Would love to hear your recommendations! And if you can, let me know what you liked most about the film you’re suggesting. Thanks!

Recommendation Movie recommendations

Hi, I just finished rewatching Enemy at the gates and was wondering. Is there a movie that has the same action sequence wherein the protagonist and antagonist try to outplay one another by being stealthy and much more cunning than one another.

Im thinking of watching sniper but nof sure if the plot is almost the same.

Cant find this movie for the life of me. I remember the plot being a couple in a tropical location, taking a drink / substance at a bar and then seeing a video of themselves hurting eachother. They both react very odd and the movie ends with some super weird ending. It is a horror movie. What movie an i thinking of?!?!?!
