TIL in 2010 Bill Murray & members of the Wu-Tang Clan were hanging out at SXSW when they entered the packed Shangri-La bar together, whereupon Murray spontaneously decided to hop over the bar & become a surprise temporary bartender who served generous tequila shots regardless of what patrons ordered

I think a long time ago bill Murray realized he can just go behind any bar and start pouring drinks and people will let him. There's multiple stories of him doing this at different places.

596

u/THE-NECROHANDSER 1d ago

Buddies parents had a vacation home in Charleston and would regularly tell us about him being a menace in the gated communities. (Mostly drinking and driving)

385

u/hotelrwandasykes 1d ago

I believe that lol. he may well have never actually hurt anyone but these stories def give a "they let you do it when you're famous" vibe

168

u/bizzaro321 1d ago

Oh no he’s a sleaze too

72

u/456dumbdog 1d ago

I don't want to excuse too much of his behavior but the culture was different and being shitty was encouraged. A good dude in the 90s is very different than a good dude today.

41

u/UnpluggedUnfettered 1d ago

You mean like Harrison Ford and Tom Hanks?

24

u/Ironboots12 1d ago

Wait what’s up with my boy Tom

62

u/UnpluggedUnfettered 1d ago

He is currently still being a good dude who was also from the times of the 90s, I believe.

37

u/ScarryShawnBishh 1d ago

Well you made it seem like something happened lol nice gotcha

He sent one of his kids to an abusive rehabilitation facility

3

u/MouthJob 7h ago

Like, he knew it was bad beforehand?

6

u/Ravensqueak 18h ago

I mean Harrison cheated on his wife.
I like the guy otherwise, but that's pretty shitty.

3

u/Puzzleheaded_Try3559 16h ago

He is also Fond of Roman Polanski, the child rapist.

3

u/GIANTG 21h ago

You mean just an affair?

-4

u/Rebelhero 19h ago

harrison ford? Who took advantage of Carrie Fisher and cheated on his wife with her? Who was known as "Generally Unfriendly"?

I stand by what I said and I don’t really disagree with you. There’s a reason I used the word sleaze instead of anything harsher. Plenty of men made it through the 80’s and 90’s without getting handsy.

1

u/J3wb0cca 10h ago

He just got done the other day forcefully kissing some actress on the mouth in an interview who’s married.

69

u/WateronRocks 1d ago

His kids (used to) trade riverdogs tickets for weed lmao. Bill is part owner

42

u/Jlindahl93 1d ago

Bro that’s a solid trade.

3

u/Fascaaay 13h ago

TIL that Bill Murray has kids, six of em, all boys and none of them is Chad Murray.

2

u/UglyInThMorning 12h ago

One of them is the assistant coach for the UConn basketball team

81

u/gameonlockking 1d ago

There's stories of him doing it in the 80's. I even watched a interview of him talking about it. I think it was rogen's podcast.

219

u/permanentmarker1 1d ago

He also does basically a ton of other douche things

58

u/LacidOnex 1d ago

I'm going to regret this, but what's wrong with Bill?

75

u/ShemsuHor91 1d ago

Just a couple days ago, he was doing an interview with Naomi Watts, who is married, and he forcibly grabbed her face and kissed her. It was really disturbing to see, and especially the way he acted about it afterward (thumbs up, "That was easy. That was way too easy." with a sleazy disgusting look on his face). He's getting reamed in the media over it the past couple days and in the comment sections wherever articles or videos about it are posted.

And coincidentally, I've also been seeing a lot of articles about lighthearted supposedly funny stuff he's done, which just happen to be popping up really frequently in the past couple days since that happened. In fact, when I Googled about the forced Naomi Watts kiss, there were a few articles about it and a slew of articles that had come out the same day about some completely unrelated comical thing or other that he had done in his past. Seems like somebody's running damage control.

I'm suspicious of this post itself for the same reason, really. Interesting timing for something like this to pop up on Reddit.

17

u/LacidOnex 1d ago

Thank goodness the real discussion is in the comments. Ty for sharing. That's gross

5

u/Odd_Opinion6054 15h ago

Read up on when he dumped Seth Green into a bin when he was a child because he sat in his chair.

9

u/filtersweep 1d ago

That was super creepy — nothing really ‘funny‘ about it at all. He deserves whatever consequences he gets.

4

u/mit-mit 1d ago

I thought the same about the timing!

2

u/SynthBeta 1h ago

It's not something popping up more randomly. It's because it was weirdly accepted back then.

186

u/Bearloom 1d ago

Threatening costars, groping a production assistant, racist comments towards Lucy Liu, generally being a violent alcoholic.

Many people he's worked with refer to him as The Murricane.

27

u/mistakes-were-mad-e 1d ago

What About Bob feud.

33

u/Bearloom 1d ago

Yeah, that fits under the "threatening costars" and "violent alcoholic" headers.

If it had ended at yelling at Richard Dreyfuss I'd call it fair - he too is known to be an ass - but going on to whip an ashtray at his head gets it counted.

29

u/MajorLazy 1d ago

Least surprising celebrity asshole to be honest

23

u/GM_Jedi7 1d ago

Yeah he's always had this rep since I was a kid in the 80s. Basically all the males from the og snl cast were known as obnoxious asses.

2

u/PatBenatari 1d ago

Garret Morris?

7

u/Bearloom 1d ago

I can't find anything bad about Garrett Morris or George Coe, and what I can find about Dan Aykroyd usually involves people pushing him into reacting.

It's just that people like Belushi, Chase, and Murray (not technically one of the originals, but close) made it seem like everyone was bad.

7

u/duaneap 1d ago

I mean there’s Chevy

1

u/NotNice4193 12h ago

I was surprised when I learned about him years ago. Wasn't surprised at all about Bill Murray. Something about him just seems like he'd be a prick

1

u/lannister80 11h ago

Chevy is waaaaay worse than Bill.

320

u/_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 1d ago

He’s the kind of guy who will jump behind a bar and start serving everyone unmeasured tequila regardless of what they ordered.

40

u/Meecus570 1d ago

That's not really douchey though.

If you want a proper drink ask one of the actual bartenders, if you want some fun order from Bill Fuckin Murray

178

u/The_Flurr 1d ago

That's not really douchey though

It is to the bar.

109

u/_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 1d ago

It also is to the people not getting the drinks they want.

99

u/Malora_Sidewinder 1d ago

If I go up to a bar and tell Bill Murray that I want a whiskey sour, and he hands me a tequila, I knew what I was signing up for.

46

u/luftlande 1d ago

Well, they should have ordered from the bartender, not the movie star that jumped behind the bar and started serving people generous amounts of tequila.

-1

u/523bucketsofducks 1d ago

Bars have guest bartenders sometimes, they usually give you what you order though

8

u/bitterless 1d ago

Yes, and you would think after the first person who ordered a drink from Bill and received tequila anyone else ordered from Bill after would know the deal.

20

u/dude_is_melting 2 1d ago

If bill Murray stepped behind my bar and started giving away my alcohol I’d punch him in his douche face. That is incredibly douchey.

If anybody that wasn’t bill Murray did this would you find it charming?

1

u/shoobsworth 1d ago

No you wouldn’t.

You’d benefit financially from his visit, likely take photos, tell customers, etc

17

u/dude_is_melting 2 1d ago

You’re right, I probably wouldn’t assault an old creepy weirdo, but I’d remove him from my bar and ban him.

lol and you go straight to violent assault. Get help for your anger issues.

5

u/wannaknowmyname 1d ago

A guy jumping over my bar to grab my product, getting in my employees way while he grabs bottles of alcohol unauthorized isn't a good first step. Punching isn't the answer but let's keep focus on the full picture

He recently shut down an entire movie production by sexually harassing/assaulting a much younger female staffer, he ended up paying a $100,000 settlement and the movie never ended up getting made

16

u/Bearloom 1d ago

That movie was also Aziz Ansari's attempt to come back after his "bad date" exile.

3

u/UglyInThMorning 12h ago

That article was so weird, the author was clearly looking for clout. I don’t like Aziz in most things he’s in but getting rolled up in that wave because of a hit piece like that was so shitty

41

Sexual harasses/assaults women. I mean he does it in a lot of his movies where it got laughs in the 80s. He's also generally a dick to work with (late, ignores calls, Geena Davis said he screamed at her in front of 300 ppl).

19

u/sumuji 1d ago

5

u/Holiday_Document4592 1d ago

Who pays for the drinks?

4

u/Crown_Writes 1d ago

The bar happily pays for them. Rail tequila is ridiculously cheap compared to the value of Bill Murray being a guest bartender.

2

u/Jlindahl93 1d ago

He did. He realized he can do just about anything that doesn’t harm someone and no one will stop him.

1

u/lcommadot 7h ago

Had a buddy who was at a restaurant eating and Bill Murray walked by him, grabbed a handful of his fries, looked him dead in the eyes and went “no one’s ever gonna believe you” and kept on walking

u/Infamous-Crew1710 31m ago

He pranked me once, pretended to be a zombie.

0

u/that_one_wierd_guy 1d ago

I think at some point someone must've figured out that's just how he is, and to keep things from going south. put someone in charge of his agenda, who would see bill's gonna be in this area, and contact restaurants/clubs in the vicinity and be like bill might be in tonight, whatever he does just go with it and bill us.

3

u/Crown_Writes 1d ago

I think places just take it as free publicity and go with it. Wasting a couple bottles of rail tequila isn't worth as much as the extra business they'd get from the stunt. I doubt there's someone calling prospective businesses in drunk bill Murrays path

166

u/hanhanbanan 1d ago

He also forcibly kissed Naomi Watts on Watch What Happens Live within the last week.

164

u/ShemsuHor91 1d ago

It's not a coincidence that posts like this are popping up just a couple days after that happened. Google about the forced Naomi Watts kiss, and most of the results are unrelated articles about comical anecdotes involving him. They're running damage control and trying to bury it.

72

u/hanhanbanan 1d ago

I’m not surprised — here’s a link for anyone who Googles and gets PR bullshit. :)

28

u/EnergyTakerLad 1d ago

Ive believed for a long time that he sort of realized famous people can get away with ridiculous things very early on in his life and has just been pushing boundaries since. Like he's been relatively "nice" about it, acting as a bartender, but eventually it had to get out of control. Its almost like he let's his intrusive thoughts just take over occasionally and he's loosened the leash a lil more each year.

Wu-Tang Clan is so weird in retrospective. The first song on one of their albums, Wu-Tang Forever, is just Popa-Wu espousing 5% Nation Doctrine. An entire opening track on an album dedicated to saying how good their racial supremacist cult is.

149

u/The_Funky_Rocha 1d ago

RZA and GZA were barely better at that later on, but fuck is Liquid Swords a perfect album

17

u/Terminator_Ecks 1d ago

That opening intro…”My father was famous…”

It’s a goddamn masterpiece from the get go and seeing him do it live is a fucking vibe. We’ve had two dogs since I was a kid called RZA then GZA. My mum says the next one is gonna be Raekwon. RZA the yorkie would respond to my dad calling him Bobby too.

5

u/bukakkebiceps 23h ago

3

u/Terminator_Ecks 17h ago

My mum’s old Facebook header was a sonogram picture where the baby was the Wu symbol. She added lyrics along the top in some meme generator in bright yellow graffiti script that said “I’ve been examined ever since I was semen, they took the sonogram and seen the image of a demon.”

35

u/Blue_Waffle_Brunch 1d ago

There's five percenter callouts on a lot of their albums.

10

u/howelltight 1d ago

Makes sense. U-god was a member

2

u/-Midnight_Marauder- 18h ago

Most of them were at various points. In NY in the late 80s/early 90s it had a lot of influence, there was also Brand Nubian and Poor Righteous Teachers. Pretty sure Zev Love X was too (not sure about when he became Doom though).

15

u/gmishaolem 1d ago

11

u/TraditionalYear4928 1d ago

36

u/anormalgeek 1d ago

Googled "5% nation" to learn more and found a good article specifically detailing Wu-tangs involvement.

https://humanities.wustl.edu/news/enter-five-percent-how-wu-tang-clan%E2%80%99s-debut-album-maps-complex-doctrine-five-percent-nation

19

u/avantgardengnome 1d ago

They had a strange array of interests, that’s for sure. But fringe politics are inescapable in underground music scenes of all kinds, and when one bursts into the mainstream you often see stuff like that happen. I’m certainly no fan of 5% Nation, but it’s not inherently weirder than, say, Rage Against the Machine getting radio play with a song glorifying mass shootings. I just happen to think RATM makes much better points lol.

Regardless, Wu-Tang were innovators and could rap like nobody’s business—easily one of the greatest groups in the history of the genre.

7

u/izackl 1d ago

You are correct. Shit it was Tragedy Khadafi and Dead Pres who put me onto the Behold A Pale Horse book. Reading that certainly made me wonder for awhile WTF goes on behind the scenes in my youth.

6

u/WesleyPCrusher 1d ago

What RATM song are you referring to?

3

u/avantgardengnome 1d ago

Down Rodeo

5

u/RogueUsername13 1d ago

How does Down Rodeo glorify mass shootings? The closest thing I think you could say about it is that it suggests class warfare. But that is not the same as glorying mass shootings

2

u/avantgardengnome 23h ago

Well yes, it suggests literal class warfare, on Rodeo Drive (ie luxury outlets), “on a solo flight.”

Also

Can’t waste a day when the night brings a hearse

So make a move and plead the fifth ’cause ya can’t plead the first

And

Bare witness to tha sickest shot while suckas get romantic

They ain’t gonna send us campin’ like they did my man Fred Hampton

Still we lampin’ still clockin’ dirt for our sweat

A ballots dead so a bullet’s what I get

And

Our target straight wit a room full of armed pawns to

Off tha kings out tha west side at dawn

Admittedly, I thought the lyrics at the end were “just a quiet, peaceful death / one thing they’ll never have” until I looked them up just now. Still, the message is pretty clear.

1

u/RogueUsername13 23h ago

I think the only line that could imply mass shooting and not targeted violence is the titular line and everything else implies violence against the “Kings”

3

u/avantgardengnome 23h ago

The kings out the west side at dawn, ie early morning shoppers on Rodeo Drive in West LA.

My intention here was to defend Wu Tang Clan, not attack Rage, and I see what you’re getting at. Regardless, go ask any old person or anybody less than sympathetic to radical politics whether they see a meaningful distinction between random violence and targeted class warfare that’s worth splitting hairs over.

2

u/RogueUsername13 22h ago

Yeah that’s fair

6

u/CHEMO_ALIEN 1d ago

which rage song was that?

4

u/avantgardengnome 1d ago

Down Rodeo. Which is a banger, don’t get me wrong lol.

4

u/ositola 1d ago

Five percenter spoken word is pretty much on all the albums and a lot of the individual members too

62

u/TheRealRockNRolla 1d ago

Case in point right here. This is annoying as hell to do to a bunch of people who didn’t ask for it.

32

u/gmishaolem 1d ago

Honestly, all the people in this post defending it is way more annoying, because they help normalize it. Let's normalize calling out jerks instead. But as long as heckling, vandalism, and rioting are seen as a-ok for sports fans, I have no hope for anything else.

Honestly Bill Murray sounds tedious to be around, all these stories about him taking food from people, turning up at weddings, inviting himself behind the bar, it's all very 'I'm the main character' behaviour..

You know he's a Reddit darling because in all those posts on Reddit about actors who play the same character in every movie, he rarely comes up despite having played the same character in way more movies than The Rock.

12

u/historicalpessimism 1d ago

16

u/plumdinger 1d ago

Wu-Tang is for the children. So is tequila!

24

u/NzRedditor762 1d ago

Is this the same Bill Murray that sexually assaults women under the guise of just being playful?
The same one that got an entire movie shut down (Being Mortal) because he was forcing himself onto a female staffer?

That Bill Murray?

13

u/BobbyMcPrescott 1d ago

I was reading stories about this on IMDB in the early 2000s. Ever since the evidence of the 2010 incident came out, I have thus known that he either did this regularly and it was a real story or he did it solely based on a copypasta from the early days of the net.

The earliest one I remember was something about someone riding a bike and someone coming along on another bike and knocking them off or something. When the person confronts them it turns out to be Bill Murray and he says "No one will ever believe you". This shit was being discussed before Garfield even released, so there is more to this story, because that's another piece of the puzzle that has been retold in a million different ways in the past quarter century.

7

u/One_Huckleberry_ 1d ago

I remember constantly reading a copy pasta about him taking someone’s chicken nugget at a Wendy’s, dunking it in their shake, eating it and saying “no one will ever believe you” like at least ten years ago

4

u/natfutsock 1d ago

The funny thing is he's started pulling this shit so much that I would believe someone's Bill Murray encounter anecdote.

Imagine if you were the designated driver at this bar and you wanted a non-alcoholic drink, and some asshole who was pretending to be a bartender gave you tequila. Doesn't matter that he's a celebrity, I'd be pissed.

Imagine you're the bartender, and now your boss is going to be pissed the your stock is fucked up.

You guys have clearly never been to sxsw. It used to be filled with stunts like this. Bar owners knew it and rolled with it.

Hell yeah, I was about to link this. I still think “Damn! That don’t sound too good, Bill Murray!” whenever someone coughs lmao.

u/fubarrabuf 1d ago

Well I'm sure the bar owner who bought all that liquor appreciated that

Did he pay for all that booze he gave away?

u/whatisboom 1d ago

Yeah and now SXSW is dead and soulless. Don’t move here.

Was also in town that year and he showed up at a random house party we were at because some cute girl invited him earlier in the day when he was walking around. He was there for like 2 hours talking to random people and having drinks, he didn’t just show up and dip out. One of those funny “oh yeah that happened” experiences you look back on.

I also flirted with Drew Barrymore while we were waiting in line to buy cigarettes out of the cigarette machine, but that’s a story for another time.

That bar fucking sucks so anything needed to make it better I support.

Not giving people what they ordered is aggressively rude.

Something else to attest that this guy is indeed a dickwad.

Gotta admit, "Bill Murray" and "Wu-Tang Clan" are names I never expected to see in the same sentence.

I was at the bar when it happened. It was a blast. SXSW used to be so much fun

He did the same thing with tequila shots at a party I was at near App State. I think his nephew went there or something. He was v nice.

This story is a reddit staple at this point

If you saw the Wu Tang Clan and Bill Murray walking into a bar, you would already assume you were drunk.

I was there. Fuzzy memories of it. Earlier that week, I was turning the corner next to the old venue "La Zona Rosa" and ran into Bill kinda hard - my first response was "Sorry Bill!" and kept walking... then I was like "wtf that was Bill Murray!"
