Looking to find a specific backing pad for a die grinder, the only ones I have are stiff but I would like to get some that are more flexible and curl up on corners so I can grind corners better. Any suggestions are appreciated

Saw this and have no clue what it is. Believe it might be a reducer that broke and was machined into a rounded cap.

Screwdriver question

My dad gave me this screwdriver/security bit set and I cannot figure out how any bits or attachments are supposed to go into it. The first picture is of the screwdriver tip, it's got what I think is a magnet in the tip but wont magnetize to anything and has an aluminum sleeve that pulls down and is spring loaded and nothing comes off. Theres an aluminum sleeve adapter thing that fits on the bits, and some standard size bits that would fit in a dewalt drill; a short Phillips and a long Phillips bit, a small drill bit and some other tools for disassembling electronics. No clue how to get stuff into the screwdriver.

What is this tool for?

It’s obviously some tool for making holes bigger, but for what? A friend gave it to me with no explanation.

Also this one. It’s a number 58 w a W on it. Different than others I’ve seen and not sure what it is exactly and what it may sell for.

You can see no 58 and then a W to the right of it. Is the W part of the stamp? Or maybe someone initial?

Vessel USB Screwdrivers

My electric screwdriver finally broke, and I bought a Vessel USB driver and a bunch of their bits. (220USB-S1) Its super nice, but I'm considering returning it. My only issue, is the Micro USB Type B. And this is probably just me being neurotic, but I wanted your opinions.

The Japanese versions use the old USB Micro Type B charging cables, and the japanese hex bits with the 13mm groove on the end.

The models with a U (which I'm guessing means made for US) use USB-C, and the US style hex bits the the 9mm end groove.

I like the bits they offer in the Japanese 13mm style, but I'm not sure if I'd rather have that, or the USB-C.

I also don't really need the Hi Torque version, so I'm not even considering those. What are your thoughts?

I'm looking for a foot pedal to variably control air flow (deeper you press, more air comes out). However all I've found is foot pedal on/off switches. Does this exist? Anyone know where I can find/make one?

Pretty much what the title says. I'm building an alcohol fueled blow torch/pipe and instead of using my lungs to get the needle shaped flame, I'd really like to set it up with my air compressor.

I also need to be able to vary how much air comes out so as to control the flame or entirely turn off the air so that it becomes just an alcohol lamp. However I also need to be able to use both of my hands to hold glass for lampwork or for doing small bits of metalwork/soldering. And I figured a foot pedal control (like for a sewing machine, tig welder, etc.) would be perfect but couldn't find any that weren't just switches.

If you're curious about the torch, google "Hanau alcohol torch" for something similar - the difference being that you use a little hand pump for that one to provide air and vary the amount of air. These aren't like a forced gas torch like modern torches. It's basically a small lamp flame with a metal nozzle that directs the air into the flame and produces the jet - a very very old way of working glass that dates back to prior to the renaissance - and I think a pretty cool one!

Thanks!

Edit: Also I'm not against building one or making one that uses digital controls as I have the necessary skills to put that together with a Pi Pico or similar. I'd just prefer to save myself the work if they exist and aren't too expensive.

A4 cut gloves for pipefitters and welders

Post image
1 Upvotes

Does anyone have experience with a good cut resistant glove for pipefitters and welders that don’t suck? We used to use the normal leather work gloves (left) but our companies policy has changed. They now require A4 cut gloves (center and right). The gloves on the right are super thick and hard to work in. They also suck in hot environments. The middle pair aren’t bad but obviously can’t grab hot material or weld in them. I’m trying to find a better option for our guys. Any input helps, thanks.

Face Vise Problem

Just got a broken vise from my dad.

He got it from my grandpa when it broke 30-40 years ago.

My Dad had the 1/2 nut (not sure what the proper term is) replaced and figured it might have just worn down over the decades, and now it’s my turn to do the same.

Does that seem to be the problem?

How would you folks go about fixing or getting this fixed?

How the heck am I supposed to get this bearing out?

Post image

Before I take a Dremel to it what should I do? I've tried hooking behind it, but it won't budge. I don't have a slide hammer. This bearing does not want to come off the shaft or casting. Before I can replace it with a bearing that has balls the remnants of this one need to come out

Ciceri Smith's Micrometer

Found treasure I forgot i had in a dusty box under the bed.

A friend gave me this about 20 years ago.

I can't find much information about this other than it is a100 year old digital micrometer. Others I have seen inside the case says Ciceri "Smith" sans the 's ,and the 4 digit ones are really cool and quite valuable.

hanger/strap nailer angle compatibility: 30, 33, 35, 36 degrees WTF!

I have a hitachi/metabo hpt strap nailer. 99% of the time for me these are into NON-treated wood. I now need drive enough hanger nails into treated lumber that I'm looking to shoot them. Bright or electro-galvanized nails are not allowed into treated, at least here - IE lowes & HD sell nothing that's hot-dipped in that angle. I'm also sort of in the market already for a hanger nailer that will take 2-1/2" nails not just the 1-1/2.

What the h3ll on angles of paper-collated strap/connector hanger nails :(

  • metabo: 36 degrees (no hot-dipped sold locally at all)
  • dewalt/stanely/bostitch: 35 degrees
  • simpson themselves: 33 degrees
    • also grip-rite, pro-fit (lowes), and a few other brands I haven't purchased before)
  • the Senco advertises compatibility with 30-34 degrees
  • paslode: 30 degrees

To what extent are any of these cross-compatible?

In particular, have you used the simpson 33degree hot-dipped successfully in the metabo, or dewalt/bostitch guns?

Thanks!

Metal chop saw modification

I got a used Evolution Rage 4 with a 7 1/4" carbide blade. Its a nice saw with good cuts. Some things I thinking about: -line laser and work light -Better clamp for less deflection -Holding smaller workpieces (150mm min) -Holding the cut off piece I might need a new base for that... Got a welding machine, a okayish drill stand and a cutoff saw (badumts) Did some of you modified your machines or build your own? Also:little ripple in the cutface, is that normal for the orange multiblade?

Are there multiple sizes of screw bits under each size (PH2, PH1, PH00)?

I have bit kits each with multiple copies of the same sizes and I got to looking at them and they don’t all fit into the screw the same. I’ve had an issue with Philips screws getting stripped (the small ones) and it got me wondering. If this is true how do you know which PH[X] to use?

Just discovering the wonderful world of Circlips! Looking for advice on pliers.

I have just taken a look at our lawnmower and purchased a replacement “circlip” (cool name), I’ve now gone down a rabbit hole of circlips and pliers! But it’s super confusing. I’m looking for a tool that would do this Circlip.

I have come across circlips on the past at home, so would be willing to buy a set if that’s what people would recommend, but I at least need to be able to work with a Circlip of this style and size. I’ve gotten as far as working out that it’s an external clip, but most of the tools I can find seem to have two prongs for holes, which this clip doesn’t have!

Looking for UK available brand suggestions. Thanks in advance!
