MI Portage/Kalamazoo Michigan checking in!
Early estimates were 4,000+ people, stretching for 1.5 miles on the busiest stretch of town.

PSA: you don't need a sign
I couldn't decide what to write on mine (and I have access to a TON of cardboard) so I just brought the supplies (cardboard and a Magnum-sized Sharpie) and offered them to people to make signs. They loved it, and I met a bunch of people and heard their stories and reasons for being there.
I also brought a trash grabber stick-thing and plastic grocery bags and picked up while I walked. People thanked me and even helped where they could. "It's not my mess, but it is my world." "Leave a place better than you find it"
At the end of the day, just being there is what counts.

Impact of the Executive Order on Kzoo Libraries
I feel like millions of dollars for "golf trips" for one man and his friends are a bigger waste of taxpayer money than libraries or museums for citizens 🤷♀️
But who cares about the general populace learning our history and/or educating ourselves towards a better future for EVERYONE?
Edit: Sorry, I didn't know for sure if it was sarcasm. I see a good amount of people who say those things in all seriousness.
I hate this shit, too.

Hands Off! Protests Against Trump Planned Nationwide for April 5. What to Know in Michigan
Oh! I could see a cohesive collection of signs being like, "Hands Off!" spelled out with 8.5" x 11" papers/signs and then individual posters with the things that are being affected: National Parks, Libraries, Social Security, etc.

Hands Off! Protests Against Trump Planned Nationwide for April 5. What to Know in Michigan
I really wish there was a database of sign/messaging ideas. I have access to SOOOO much cardboard, I'll probably bring extra, but I need ideas for what to put on them.
I LOVE the simplicity of a crown with a "no" symbol over it, but I feel like the signs also need to have specific information to communicate WHAT is happening that we're upset about. "Hands Off!", sure, but a lot of these people are only hearing soundbites and may only be watching Fox News, which doesn't cover the truth of it! So "Hands off..." what? Our signs need to communicate what the nightly news hasn't.
I use the Titanic when I discuss what's happening, pointing out that "there aren't enough lifeboats on our Titanic, either ", meaning the things that are being destroyed are supporting a lot of people who will LITERALLY die without it. But that's a lot to swallow, and might not be able to be represented in signage.
These messages/symbols have to be interpreted by people driving by at 35 mph, so billboard advertising principles apply...
What ideas do we have?

Impact of the Executive Order on Kzoo Libraries
"From the Director, Michael Cockrell Kalamazoo Public Library has received many inquiries regarding the recent Executive Order signed on March 14, 2025, which seeks to eliminate the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and how it will affect KPL services to our patrons.
IMLS is a federal agency that funds libraries, museums, and related organizations in the United States. The Library of Michigan distributes this funding to libraries across Michigan to support vital resources and programming. KPL uses these funds to provide our cardholders’ access to the Michigan Electronic Library Catalog (MeLCat), which offers millions of books, CDs, DVDs, manuscripts, and other materials from 170+ libraries across Michigan.
In addition, KPL relies on IMLS funds to support our MeL Databases, which provide instant access to articles from tens of thousands of magazines and newspapers. Students and professionals in Kalamazoo utilize these databases daily for research and occupational enrichment.
For KPL, the loss of IMLS funding will require either an alternative funding source for MeLCat and MeL Databases or a reduction in services to our patrons. Other libraries in Michigan will face much larger struggles.
“A dismantling of the Institute of Museum and Library Services would have negative implications for every American and the library services on which they rely,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice in a statement released by the Michigan Department of Education on March 20, 2025. “This action would decrease access to books and other library materials and harm residents in Michigan and across the country, especially those in small and rural communities.”
We sincerely thank our patrons and the Kalamazoo community for their continued support, and we encourage them to stay informed on this issue."

California working on trade with other countries to get around tariffs. Can Michigan jump on this train?
Whitmer has already been talking to European countries about this kind of thing.

Carney: The system of global trade anchored on the United States.. is over. Our old relationship of steadily deepening integration with the United States is over. The 80 year period when the United States embraced the mantle of economic leadership… is over.

In Kalamazoo we had a couple "coal rollers" (my husband jokes that they are scared little squids, so they "ink", lol)
A couple shouting "Trump Trump Trump!" as they've passed, but most cars honked in support and I have heard of any confrontations
