FOOD I just saw the most disgusting thing in Kapiti

I was at the newly opened One Sushi in Kapiti and an old man came to try their food. He asked alot of questions, became puzzled by the concept of chicken katsu and then asked the staff to put salt in his sushi. They asked him if he meant Soy Sauce. With a slight offended tone he replied "No! I want Salt!". The guy at the counter salted the sushi while the old man told him to put more salt.

A crime has been committed.

WELLY Why don’t buses have windows that open?

Post image
16 Upvotes

The older buses (the Designlines for all you bus nerds) had little latches on the top of the window that you could open to get some fresh air in. But most of the newer (especially electric) ones seem to be sealed off, and with air-conditioning that either doesn’t work or sounds like you’ve got a jet engine sitting beside your eardrums (usually both).

Why? Is it a safety issue? An idiot-proof mechanism to stop people ruining the interiors by leaving the windows open in the rain? A public health measure to remind people, actually, Rexona is not an appropriate substitute for showering?

SELLING After 13 years it's time to sell my flat (private sale) and everything in it. Going fully nomad.

Upvotes

https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/property/residential/sale/listing/5251327860

Private sale, I'm not a real estate agent, and I don't want one, no offence - don't contact me if you are one.

CBD fringe, warm double glazed flat and amazing views 565K

Fully furnished home or ready-to-go rental within 20 minutes pleasant downhill walking distance through the park to Lambton Quay and The Terrace in the CBD, or over the hill to Vic university.

Check the listing for open homes or txt to make an appt.

All furniture and contents shown is available with the sale if wanted as selling due to travels.

This very private ground-floor 1930s art deco flat has native timber flooring throughout with underfloor insulation, heat pump, dehumidifiers and double glazing, with a small sheltered garden area with amazing views (and sounds) of Botanic gardens and harbour.

About 60 well lit steps up to the place, but making up for it are views, security, and saving on gym membership!

This is a private sale, a laid-back sale process for me and more flexibility for settlement dates for you if needed. Standard Sale and Purchase process to be led by each party's conveyancing lawyers.

Body corporate levy = $475 p/m* As of April 2025
Total of 1540 sq/m land area is shared by body corporate.

NOTE: This levy covers the building insurance (which is normally a mortgage requirement cost regardless - house insurance alone for Wellington is usually over $300 p/m), shared commercial-grade laundry facilities (large washing machine and drier, and their maintenance plus electricity costs!), maintaining shared walkway areas inc. gardener, painting work, etc.

This well-run body corporate has sensible rules including being cat friendly, finances and 10+ year plan. Documentation available on request.

TIP: Plans for a small deck area/walkway for the harbour and gardens-facing front of the unit is also approved by the BC - an opportunity for you to add another small outdoor area and future value!

  • LOUNGE: furniture, large double-glazed window with botanic gardens + harbour views
  • KITCHEN: dbl glazed, incl. electric oven, ceramic hob, extractor fan + fridge freezer
  • BEDROOMS (x2): furniture, fitted wardrobes, harbour views, dbl glazed
  • BATHROOM: dbl glazed, new shower and sink unit, wall heater, heated towel rail, great extractor fan.

WELLY Bucket fountain mini replica

I would love to bring the chaos of the bucket fountain back home from my travels.

Is there anywhere that a small/souvenir version can be gotten? It doesn’t matter if it works at all

HELP! Taxi availability to the airport

Upvotes

I’m flying out of Wellington on Thursday 6am, would you recommend me to just book an Uber to the airport or is there a better way? I’m worried that there might be no taxis around at 4am on a weekday.

PETS Best cat collar?

Upvotes

A cat now lives with me. I bought her a collar from a pet store, not the cheapest one, as it had safety connector so that if she got caught on something it would pop off. I've witnessed this prevent her neck being broken so I think that was a good purchase!

However, it was also a bit of a slippy collar, I was constantly readjusting it so it was the correct fit and not way too loose on her. And she's since lost it.

For the cat owners with the insane adventurous cats with high intelligence but low wisdom, what collar do you use? I want to give native wildlife the best chance to get away from her (she's an outdoor cat, and she's not mine, so no discussions about that please, I'm not in need of convincing). And I also want something that will stay on her unless it pops off due to the safety release, and gives her a fair chance to be seen by cars.

All the stuff I can see in shops or online looks pretty samey and I feel like I won't know if it'll come lose quickly or not until I buy it, so hoping to get some good recommendations!

Hi, I was having some drinks at the Welsh dragon last night and ran into a couple dudes who had the coolest souls I've come across in ages, a tall bald fella named Flynn and his mate Max with glasses. If it sounds like someone ya know please get in touch! Chur

HOUSING Our pipes burst and our landlord won’t pick up the phone

Should we hire a plumber ourselves and hope the landlord reimburses us when they eventually respond to our messages/calls? I don’t want to end up in a situation where they refuse to pay because we got an option that they consider to be “too expensive” or some shit

HELP! Important nose surgery referral declined twice from public system

I'm lost as to what I should do to fund my nose surgery as my private insurance has a exclusion due to my allergies. This surgery includes a septoplasty, bilateral mini fess with reduction open olfactory recesses and turbinoplasty. This is not severe enough according to Capital coast/wellington hospital as they told me they only fund people with cancer basically. I know this will drastically increase my quality of life as smell and breathing through my nose has been severely restricted since I can remember. I don't have 28k out of pocket so any advice to get this surgery ASAP will be appreciated.

HELP! Help, Medical waiting lists!

Im on the waiting list for a couple things but the biggest thing is routine ultrasound found an unknown lesion in organ, that requires further investigation. Wait times for general surgery to access for MRI and biopsy is 12-18 months, but if this is cancer I could die on the waiting list. I don't have health insurance.

SPORT Any run clubs that welcome slow runners?

I'm keen to try out a run club, just to see what all the hype is about! But I am a pretty slow runner (7-8min/km) and definitely don't want to stand out, or be the last one to finish.

Are there any run clubs around that have slow runners too? Preferably that run after work or on the weekends.

POLITICS Former mayor, Andy Foster doesn't want public sector agencies to have legal obligations to promote diversity and inclusion

Andy Foster, the former mayor of Wellington and now an MP for the NZ First party, has proposed a bill to remove parts of the Public Service Act that require leaders of public service agencies to cultivate and promote workforces that reflect the diversity of NZ. You have to wonder why this bothers someone so much, like is he afraid that - as a senior white male - he'll lose his power? Why else would the effort to pass the bill into law and the messages it sends seem worth it to him?

Are there any nice cafe options for settling in with a coffee before I nail myself in a CrossFit class?
