Wizardpost Any lore on this magic item?
Found this object with a very strong aura. Wondering if anyone has any ancient texts that mention heavy metal rods that make the air spicy? Possible curse maybe?

Buddy of mine found a RARE purple one of them over yonder village, necro’d his hands clean off after a few months
405
u/evil_math_teacher Evil Wizard Jan 31 '25
So the purple one is necrotic damage, what is the blue?
306
u/KandiStar Dark Witch Jan 31 '25
radiant damage
110
u/KALW_original Jan 31 '25
Technically, it's heat damage, but since it doesn't actually cause fire, it can't be labeled as fire damage. So radiant is a suitable explanation.

u/123qwet12 Jan 31 '25
Stronger necrotic damage, very nasty stuff. Accidentally licked one of these babies once and I do not exaggerate that out of all 1699 of my deaths, that has been the single most painful
71

Obviously cold damage. Come on man, it's like you never played video games.

u/DatOneAnimator56 Gravitationer Apprentice Jan 31 '25
You are all fools, it's psychic damage. Master's got one of these in his younger years. 'Sez he almost went insane, done some self harm to try and distract himself from the mental pain. The damage you take is you trying to attack yourself (mostly from spells) and usually you never notice. Master was lucky he found out about the psychic aura.

'Tis used for sickening radiance as well as nuclear fireball?
13
u/Arik-Taranis Jan 31 '25
Fool! If enchantment to create and wield a heart of fire were so simple, the world would have perished long ago. It is an esoteric process, involving a thousand-step refinement of the second form of Uranus, a gasket of true starblood, and rituals of detonation known only to the brotherhood of Alamos, among many, many others. Turn back now, lest the curse of the isotope befall thou!

Unfortunately, he wasn't quite so adept at nuclear containment, and wound up irradiating himself, his home, and his neighborhood. Pretty fascinating, and tragic, story.

Fae treat, often used in negotiations or gifts. Kinda like a coffee bar. Do be clear when trading to avoid marriage and other common fae cons. Don't forget to hide it in an iron and lead box, so they don't eat it before the deal is struck.

u/stunt_p Jan 31 '25
It's safe enough. The half life of cobalt 60 is about 5 or so years. Since 1967, there have been 11.5 half lives have passed, making it effectively gone.
93
u/TwixOfficial Transmuter Jan 31 '25
Definitely cursed. Looks like an enchanting experiment gone wrong. That first big rune is a sigil used to produce the effect, I think, but it looks like it was already scratched out so you might just be dealing with the lingering curse rather than an actively cursed object.
25
u/Agent_03 Jan 31 '25 edited Jan 31 '25
I once worked in an enchanter's lab with similar items.
It STILL doth bear a truly puissant curse, for behold: it lights the room with the blue aura of Cherenkov. With a merely strong curse, the aura can only be seen faintly when immers'd in a vessel of water, but if the curse is truly potent it can be seen with the vapors in the air alone. Normally the Device of Geiger would be needed to detect a milder curse; that the naked eye beholds its aura leaves this enchanter's robes soiled with fear for the bearer.
I fear the curse has already inflicted itself upon the holder. Let us work with haste to assemble shields of lead that we may contain such a virulent curse lest it fell others. Edit: a fellow enchanter has worked the runes and divined that this curse is lethal in no more than in 5-15 minutes to the bearer, less if held closely. Or, almost immediately deadly when the artifact was originally enchanted and forged.
7
u/zackadiax24 Totally Not a Lich Jan 31 '25
Yeah, that may have been mine. A couple hundred years ago I was trying to make a large supply of items enchanted with nuclear magic as they where getting ready to ban it. Fun thing about the councils rules is they only cover spell casting, not spell releasing such as in magic items.
That was one of my first attempts. I thought I had somone bury those.

The fact that this picture is so clear and so close means that camera might be an actual magic item.
14
u/Perfect_Birthday_867 Jan 31 '25 edited Jan 31 '25
It's unlikely that the Co-60 source shown is able to produce the gamma radiation to affect camera equipment (or even produce cherenkov radiation, or more accurately, it would be unlikely to produce cherenkov radiation to a significant enough degree to be visually significant). My eyesight isn't too good, so I can't tell if the source date on it is 63 or 03, but either way, the half life of Co-60 is 5.27 years and given that even if I fail conservative and say 03, more than 4 half life's have past meaning it would have decayed to around 196 Ci, which although still significant and would pose a health risk, it is not nearly as much of an immediate concern to equipment or personnel, and casual contact with it for a short time would likely cause only minor issues if any. If it was initially counted and labeled in 63, then obviously, you would see an even more dramatic decrease in the radioactivity present in the source and wouldn't be likely to pose a significant risk.
Edit: I am leaving this here for integrity purposes, but check the response to my post to see the appropriate corrections.

u/Agent_03 Jan 31 '25 edited 21d ago
Behold, it hath lived 11 half-lives and yet even thus diminished the original curse was so puissant that even at a tiny fraction of its former strength it still slays those nearby. A less lazy enchanter than I has worked the runes and divined that even today this item's curse is lethal in no more than in 5-15 minutes to the bearer, less if held closely. Or, almost immediately deadly when the artifact was originally enchanted and forged.
The flaw in your logic is that even a single Curie denotes a substance of strong aura, for it took its original value from the mighty emanations of a gram of radium. Worse, it measures the number of emanations per second and not the force of such rays nor their impact upon the material body, and per decay Co-60 yields 2 truly dire rays of gamma. The gamma may pass undeterred through even dense matter and wreaketh havoc within the body whole. Even lead (among the mightiest shields against radiant damage) needs 46 mm (!!!) to reduce the radiation to a tenth of its potency.
Lo, if one wishesth to divine further one must account for subtended solid angle and distance from the source. But per their calculations at one meter the dose is approximately 40-45 Sv/h, and 0.4-1 Sievert sickens the body with radiance where 2-10 kills painfully.
Suffice it to say that I would never hold this cursed item in my bare hands unless willing to lose them and potentially my life as well. For this cursed artifact the incantation "drop and run" is firm guidance and no mere gentle hint, and should be obeyed FORTHWITH!

All is for the good, for the mystic art of dosimetry indeed hath many subtle traps to ensnare the unwary. Edit: I appreciate you leaving the original intact for integrity purposes, that others may learn of those subtleties and how they can mislead even those with the best of intent.
Cobalt-60 is a most noxious substance, with power far excess of most normal sources of radiant damage one would encounter.

It was even used to curse the material that would otherwise be used for destruction spells.

What a rare find! That's one of the components for the advanced spell Nuclear Fireball!
3
u/Agent_03 Jan 31 '25
Nay, although sometime mistaken by less proficient wizards for such a component, this rod cannot generate a fireball. The true components for such a 9th level spell are orbs of purest plutonium or uranium-235.
This rod doth bear a truly puissant curse of radiant damage that will slay all nearby if not contained in a vessel of THICK lead to limit the curse. A gifted diviner assisted by sufficiently cautious artificers can use it to peer through objects that are normally impenetrable to even the most gifted gaze... but its use requires the highest caution.

Behold: you can SEE the unholy aura of Cherenkov with the naked eye from just the vapours of the air! That is only seen with the most potent of curses, and even then usually it requires immersion in water.
This must be contained in a vessel of thickest lead FORTHWITH, lest it slay not merely the bearer but also innocents who may be nearby!

Much lore, some say it is a cursed artifact, destined to plague those who touch it with an onslaught of incurable illnesses.
Others still say it is the powersource a mad artificer used for the most lethal explosive ever contacted in thier realm. Still others say it was merely one of the most efficient batteries that artificer ever made.

I remember this one from history class! The famous mage Oppenheimer and his coven used similar materials as components for a spell similar to fireball, although on a much greater scale than ever imagined. Unfortunately, it had to be used on the Empire of Japan in order to end their shenaniganry. From here, it was only an arms race, as the United States of America and Soviet Union engaged in a a variety of proxy wars and diplomatic standoffs, although the undeclared war between them remained very cold. However, it is not just used for offensive spells, being a crucial ingredient for the thaumic reactors used in power labs and the metal fish of my Navy cousins. It should be largely safe to use, with PPE (Proper Protective Enchantments) of course.

This item has expired in potency. It’s a cursed item that loses half its potency ~ every 5.2 years. Given it’s the year 2025 at lest referenced to the calendar used in this item it has lost most of its power. It’s gone through ~12 half lives meaning it’s still mildly angry and cursed. so if you spend too much time around it may be able to cast a delayed death curse.

It also appears it is inscribed with the random mutation rune which over time can cause mutations to anyone affected by its AoE. Pretty strong item if you ask me. Has a lot of magic energy that can be harnessed if you know what you're doing.
1
u/AlrikBunseheimer Jan 31 '25
I think the runes on it say you should immediately drop it and run away. The longer it stays close to you the bigger the curse. You will be cursed with a terrible disease, your skin will become red and burnt. Then you will start to vomit after 6 to 8 hours. You will have a headace and if this stays too long too close to you, you will get bloody diarrea, basicially exreting your own organs.
