Some dark fantasy style ASCII art for a game that plays in the terminal
 in  r/linux_gaming  Feb 22 '25

I love your art!

There is an utterly amazing app called REXPaint by the creator of Cogmind. It doesn’t generate anything for you, so the art stays pure. But in my humble opinion it is a way better tool than a text editor. Check it out — if you haven’t already, of course.

Cheers!

How to know what is meaningful?

To my dismay, I realized that it is hard for me to even discern what is meaningful, let alone attain it. The set of meaningless things is infinite, so one cannot really reason by the process of elimination here.

To add some clarity to my question: there are many things that I find “interesting” or “attractive”, “beautiful”, “exciting”, “enjoyable” or “satisfying”. Yet none is exactly the same as being meaningful. In fact, I fear that a majority of those are mere shallow distractions from meaning, perhaps, proverbial honeypots for the soul.

I am not asking what is meaningful—rather how to tell what is. Or, to the blessed few who have found that meaning: what does it feel like?

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

New to painting and feeling discouraged. Do you like my art? My friends/family don't.

The first one feels like spring and hope. Don’t be discouraged.

God, I thought I was alone in doing that, and I was too ashamed to check, since I am a grown-ass man.

Ore processor won't relinquish refined substances (Alpha 19)

Can confirm, u/SarcousRust was correct, and this was an unfortunate rounding artifact. Processing more ore had tipped the count over and the processor had released full units of respective resources.

Huh, come to think of it, the increment can indeed use 2 or even 3 digits of precision. I’ll let the two machines run for a while longer and report back :)

Although, I might add, if true, such rounding up is a bit misleading.

Hey everyone! So I have an Ore Processor and a Metal Refinery. The processor has accumulated 1 unit of base metals and carbon each, but they just sit in its inventory, and the Refinery stays idle while its UI claims that neither metals nor carbon is available on the ship. What gives? =)

10 out of 10 on the red flag list. I would probably say the same for the “green flags”, but that would be a touch self-congratulatory, so it’s not for me to judge here.

Is it safe to go clubbing as a woman alone in Calgary?
 in  r/Calgary  Jul 05 '24

I would venture to say that in any city in the world an 18-year old girl, alone and new to the town, is vulnerable going to places with alcohol, drugs and venting steam.

wiki or knowledge base with discord integration

Anything new out there? Having some sort of a wiki (even as simple as the one on Github) would help immensely for preserving and developing community lore.

In our case, we have a server for an emergent role-playing game, and player-generated lore accumulates almost exponentially.

I would point out that top arguments against developing specifically an AGI seem much more specific than that.

For example, one states that AGI is an entity of potentially unlimited computational (“intellectual”) power, unbounded by human ethics. That’s the misalignment argument.

And now think about the endless times when wars and mass destruction was caused by ye olde humans, whose actions were “misaligned” with the desire to live experienced by their subjects as much as opponents.

Discussion The love of roaming

Would anyone else say that wandering about seemingly without aim is something they are particularly fond of?

In childhood, roaming the parks or even quaint winding streets of the old city was a special treat for me. All sorts of strange and fantastic images would pop into my mind, blending the environmental aspects with stories and characters from books and games. I used to talk to myself under my breath all the time, addressing those characters and “discussing” with them those liminal dimensions for which I had no rational concept back then. My childhood wasn’t the worst by any means, but I badly needed spaces where I would’ve felt safe and in control, — and those long strolls felt oddly rejuvenating.

Much later in my life I learned that hippocampus — a weird crooked structure at the base of our brains — exists in part to host neural maps of the physical environments we inhabit. But more astonishingly, some studies suggest that those neural structures represent maps of objects architecturally much the same as maps of ideas and experiences. Our life may be literally a navigation through the fields, forests and stygian caves of our thoughts and memories.

Now I suspect that my roaming was not quite as aimless as it might have seemed…

What do you think makes dnd fair when the dm knows all your weaknesses and you know nothing about enemy?
 in  r/DnD  May 10 '24

The characters and situations the DM creates for you may or may not be adversarial. The DM themselves, as a role, is your friend with whom you play cooperative make-belief.

Also monitoring would help to see if there are any memory or potentially other resource bottlenecks. 2.5 PB of storage is no joke to go without one.

This has been the bane of my existence since childhood. Night is like a drug for me: it feels so safe and relaxing that time and time again I stay up waaaay too late, ruining my energy the day after and threatening my responsibilities.

I am addicted to the Night.
