Here's how Luigi Mangione changed the behaviour of inmates, guards in prison in Pennsylvania
 in  r/TheAdjuster  Jan 26 '25

The entire cell block was locked down whenever he was removed from his cell.

Inmates got threatened after the shouting & light-blinking during the NewsNation interview, got told they'd better not do it again.

No systemic change, if that's what you were looking/hoping for.

Even worse is that news articles from well after the correction was made continue/d to repeat the error. So much for stringent fact-checking, I guess. 🧐

Why do people keep saying that the evidence police have is flimsy?
 in  r/BrianThompsonMurder  Jan 22 '25

That's certainly a possibility, though I have yet to see any official info / identification released regarding the backpack he was carrying in Altoona. I suppose that's the key question here.

Right on. As far as I have been able to find, there is nothing in terms of photos or further details to back to this claim, added to LM's own statement that he didn't have a faraday bag, which is why I am extremely skeptical and think the prosecutor's statement was misinformation or disinformation.

Me neither. I would expect at least to see some aluminum foil or similar lining in the evidence photo if that were the case.

The bag is pictured in the evidence photo:  https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/luigi-pics-4.jpg?w=939

It is a Nani brand (made in Hawaii) cosmetic bag, of the same style (but different fabric print and maybe smaller) as this: https://poshmark.com/listing/Nani-Island-Cosmetic-Pouch-Zippered-NWOT-Black-White-Pineapple-Print-Hawaiian-65bb7e8681078a3e94abeea0

As sold, it is a plain canvas pouch bag with zipper. It is neither waterproof nor faraday, unless someone modified it after purchase.

Good share. BTB & ICHH are on my regular subscription/listen list.

Definitely perspectives of interest to anyone who wants to hear more about class/wealth inequality, carceral justice, domestic t3rr*rism, US healthcare/insurance concerns, mutual aid & preparedness, and other leftish/progressive topics & concerns.

Commissary List for MDC Brooklyn: What LM Can Buy
 in  r/FreeLuigi  Jan 13 '25

Stamps have long been prison currency. Just because he can't buy more from commissary doesn't mean he can't get them from other inmates, for a price.

Can we have an honest conversation about his guilt or innocence?
 in  r/BrianThompsonMurder  Jan 13 '25

Thanks for sharing. I find myself in the "not enough verified evidence to commit to a conclusion" camp, and have a hard time fully relating to the people who have already decided before the trial has begun.

I find myself needing to see corroboration of police reports and statements, for instance, rather than just believing them on the authority of police -- you know -- the same people that publicized one of the wrong D words before issuing a correction that like 85% of the world seems to have still not received.

Everything the police say without additional corroboration (e.g. video footage of arrest & inventory process in PA, photographic images of the handwritten notebook pages) falls into "Big IF true" for me, but that IF is lifting like Atlas at the moment.

Not surprised… 🙄🙄
 in  r/FreeLuigi  Jan 13 '25

Pure speculation on my part, but considering he ate steak as a child, and the food & protein available will be less than ideal, he may consider putting pause on the vegetarian diet, similar to how some women do during pregnancy. If he were veg from childhood, I'd consider it pretty unlikely.

Article from Altoona on December 12th. Interesting article about LM whereabouts before arrest.
 in  r/FreeLuigi  Jan 11 '25

As noted below, the worker assumed LM was a veteran. This article states that the motel is across the street from a VA (Veteran's Affairs) Medical Center -- this is the first time I've heard that specifically, but it really makes sense then why the desk employee might be accustomed to seeing vets coming in and not think anything unusual about it.

What is something that is considered a faux-pas in all of America that you would tell all non-Americans to avoid doing?
 in  r/AskAnAmerican  Jan 11 '25

It can also be done at Trader Joe's for canned & bottled drinks, but it's such a big exception to the norm that they put up specific signs explaining that it's a thing you're allowed to do.

LAX really isn't that bad. However, getting to or from the airport via ground transpo blows.

Angry at Health Insurance but okay with Homeowners insurance?
 in  r/FreeLuigi  Jan 10 '25

I think some people care because they have name/face recognition of the celebrities or because they can see the celebrity posts about it, but idgaf about the celebrities. I care about the 66 year old who died with a garden hose in hand trying to save his home since childhood in Altadena. (And the "common people" like him that have lost life /property. And yeah tbh, everyone who's sucking in that toxic smoke rn and can't do anything about it because their apartments have louvered windows or leaky doors.)

I assume you all used a latte printer rather than by hand, but nice choice all the same

LM confusing social media presence
 in  r/FreeLuigi  Jan 05 '25

Fair, the daily experience may not be obviously different for lots of people. I was speaking based on what I have read over time and what OP indicated without assuming their location too narrowly. But it is a fact that generally across numerous European countries, people have greater legal ability to enforce a right to privacy online that is not available to most Americans. Some countries seem more serious than others; my understanding is that Germany tends to value this right pretty highly and exercise it regularly, for instance.

Books for LM Update - Most books are being returned to sender.
 in  r/FreeLuigi  Jan 05 '25

In the long run, you're absolutely right, and I do (unfortunately) think there will be time and opportunity later to send thoughtful off-list items. In this early onslaught, I just don't understand why people have felt the need to go so wildly rogue (yes, like romantasy!) when he basically left a wish list.

In a better circumstance, he wouldn't be limited in how many books he could receive and possess. In which case I would mind my own biz about what anyone else is sending, because undoubtedly there ARE books people would send that he's never considered but would enjoy. For the moment, prioritize is the word that comes to mind. But I do think some time down the road, the opportunity will be there for folks to pleasantly surprise him with a selection.

And same, I truly hope he's seeing this outpouring of support and taking it to heart.

Lol, I agree it's a good book, and I've got no quarrel with it, or with it being on his list 😆. It's the ones that's AREN'T on his list that I'm giving side eye

LM confusing social media presence
 in  r/FreeLuigi  Jan 05 '25

If you live in Europe, you live in a very different cultural attitude about online privacy compared to the US.

This interview goes into a little. https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2017/08/when-it-comes-to-internet-privacy-be-very-afraid-analyst-suggests/

Generally in the US, if a millennial or younger DOESN'T have some sort of personally identifiable social media, that is the weird Luddite outlier. And even with older folks, it's common. Of course, anyone could also have more anonymous "throw-away" accounts in addition to their public-facing ones, and it's normal to curate some level of public vs friends-only on individual posts, but it's pretty expected to have at least SOMETHING that someone could Google your name and find. If you don't leave any identifiable trace online, that's when people in the US are most likely to think it's kind of weird.

Mail to LM Master Post
 in  r/FreeLuigi  Jan 05 '25

Best practices for multiple pages? Is it better to write one sheet double-sided, or two sheets single-sided? Is there any approved method of keeping the pages together other than folding the corners together, or stapleless staplers that cut and interfold the paper? Best practices of MDC delivers 100% photocopies instead of originals? (Wondering about required margins to not have content cut off at the edges, as well as likelihood of problems with ink bleed if double sided.)

Thank you!
