What are some beginner projects that you think everyone should do?
 in  r/quilting  5d ago

A baby quilt has all the same steps as a king-size quilt, just on a much smaller scale. Even if you don't know any babies, you can usually find nearby organizations that distribute blankets to families in need.

And a pair of quilted potholders is a low-stakes but good way to practice using a walking foot (if you have one) and binding.

Best Books of the 21st Century (So Far)
 in  r/books  7d ago

I like how some of the best books of the century so far according to Kirkus weren't good enough to get a starred review from Kirkus when they were originally published.

Does it need something more?

It looks amazing as it is. Bind it!

My favorite too. The star gets a little lost for me when the center is light, as in options 1 and 2.

Wanting to watch Joan Crawford's movies?
 in  r/classicfilms  12d ago

Trog is an absolutely terrible movie about an anthropologist who tries to communicate with a troglodyte found in a cave but Joan gives it 100%.

Thank you for this! In most things, I am stuck in the 70s.

I’ve had pain there that gets better/goes away with the RICE treatment. Rest Ice Compression Elevation. Do some of each every day for a week or so. Also the towel stretch.

Have you read The Known World by Edward P. Jones? I think a fan of Baldwin and Morrison (of which I am too) would dig it. Historical epic with really compelling characters and an interesting sense of time and place. I loved it.

Quilting suggestions?

Seconding this. I made a quilt last year with exactly your scheme and I quilted diagonally in the neutral squares in both directions.

The news story that inspired Barbara Loden’s Wanda

Wanda fans should check out Natalie Léger’s book Suite for Barbara Loden. It’s fantastic.

Is this enough quilting?
 in  r/quilting  15d ago

Ah, yeah, then you're going to want to go the other direction. I liked the stitch-in-the-ditch suggestion elsewhere on the thread.

Is this enough quilting?
 in  r/quilting  15d ago

This is beautiful! The package your batting came in will likely tell you the maximum number of inches allowed between quilted stitches. It's generally 8 inches or so. Eyeballing this, I'd say you've got that. This doesn't mean that aesthetically you don't need more stitches...(I don't think you do.)

I wanna dive into Charles Portis world, which book to start with first?
 in  r/suggestmeabook  21d ago

It’s really funny, first of all. It’s also short so it’s necessarily more focused as the plot goes. It’s a really simple premise but it unfolds in unexpected ways. Terrific characters.

I think Norwood is just about perfect.
