The entire point of the goats…
 in  r/severence  12d ago

I didn't find it that hilarious. Honestly, I found the writing lazy and uninspired for most of this season. The only two good sequences that I found in the finale to be on par with the creativity and absurdity of the first season were the conversation between iMark and oMark at the birthing cabin, and the elevator scene with Mr. Drummond.

Israel has murdered journalist Hossam Shabat in Gaza today. This was him embracing his mother after months of separation during the "ceasefire" last month.
 in  r/chomsky  13d ago

Hossam Shabat was one of six Palestinian journalists accused by the Israeli army in October 2024 of belonging to the armed branches of Hamas and conducting Islamic Jihad in Palestine — a recurring accusation already used against other Al-Jazeera journalists killed by the Israeli army, namely Ismail al-Ghoul, Hamza al-Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya. An RSF investigation found that the documents published by the Israeli military on Hossam Shabat severely lacked proof these journalists were affiliated with the military and in no way granted a licence to kill.

Yes, you may have the best of friendships and loyalty, and genuinely, the character of the "friend" might be nice. But if the weapon is found in your hands at the time of murder even if you haven't murdered the person, you will be held guilty until proven innocent.

Crazy that you compare cannabis use to murder. I get the 'law breaking activities' metaphor. A lot of people use cannabis and those who do, including me, want the regressive outlook towards it to change in malayali society. We need to move from sensational stories and scare tactics towards harm reduction and awareness about responsible use. All this hype about "hybrid kanjavu" is , at the end of the day, meant to mislead, because people might think it means some scary new variant with hard drugs mixed in.

A Drug like cannabis is here to stay, after all, it's just a plant. If we accept that it's not going to completely go away, we will start looking for more effective solutions to ensure that younger people are less likely to use it and adults use it responsibly.

Marco banned from Television screening
 in  r/InsideMollywood  Mar 05 '25

The people who pay for the account should control that. There are parental controls that can be turned on for kids' accounts. Why is that the responsibility of the government or the OTT, other than providing the necessary filters and tools?

The stupidity of this
 in  r/scienceisdope  Mar 04 '25

Maybe you don't like the style/approach of their content (I don't either), but there is nothing stupid or inaccurate about it. They probably wanted to bring the point across without too many tangents, so they ignored neutron stars etc. But it's essentially the same content as this video, based on the physics that we know: https://youtu.be/4IxuXuLbMoQ

Stop being so arrogant and childish. Even if you believe that science and rationality contain the ultimate knowledge, we still don't know everything.

Could this be true. I am having a hard time believing it.

Add to it the fact that (as per this wiki article) phages are used as indicators of water quality since it mimics the behaviour of many viral pathogens and their presence is strongly associated with the presence of fecal matter.

Yodhavu +91 9995966666 Kerala police new initiative to report drug mafia.
 in  r/Kerala  Feb 06 '25

If you are asking in good faith, I can give you my personal perspective. There are many responsible users of drugs including cannabis, LSD, MDMA and even cocaine. So if the criminality involved in the sourcing of these drugs are eliminated, I see no reason for it being criminal. From the point of view of an individual, drug use is a victimless crime ("crime" only because it's defined as such in law). So decriminalising makes sense to a lot of people including myself.

However, there are societal level harms which need to be addressed. I don't think India and Kerala have the state capacity to legalise and regulate these drugs. But decriminalising small quantities informally is possible (just as an internal policy in law enforcement), and that's probably also the optimal solution, rather than investing a large portion of our already under-capacity and incompetent police force for this.

Most people (users and non-users) are not informed about the effects of most of these drugs. At least one of the reasons is that there hasn't been enough research on the effects of these because of stigma. A lot of psychoactive and psychedelic drugs are not physically addictive, although they can be really damaging for very young people. But these problems are not exclusive to hard drugs, almost all of them apply to cigarettes and alcohol as well.

Being a mother in the west would be a dream, I thought. But compared with Uganda, it was a nightmare | Patience Akumu
 in  r/Switzerland  Feb 06 '25

And I absolutely empathise with that. My problem is only with the tone of this article. It's an opinion piece, so her perspective is interesting. But not acknowledging her privilege and acting like her experience is the standard in Uganda is kind of shitty. I'm all for bashing the endlessly individualist and capitalist western society. But she lost me at the average Ugandan family being able to afford domestic help.

Having lived for most of my life in India, I would rather live in a society where everyone gets at least one day off work every week and everyone is treated with respect regardless of their socioeconomic class. Unfortunately, that is impossible in societies where an average family can afford one whole human's labour to do their chores, cook their food and change their baby's diapers.

Reading this article, I felt the same cringe I feel when listening to some of my fellow Indian immigrants talking about themselves and their experience as an "average Indian". Like she says in this article that an average Ugandan family can hire a house help. I don't know what they think average means, but I highly doubt that making it to Switzerland and even deciding to live between Switzerland and Uganda while visiting family regularly counts as the average Ugandan experience. This whole article wouldn't have sounded so tone-deaf if she didn't try to make it like her experience is the norm in Uganda.

Around 2 Lakh people leave Indian Citizenship every year
 in  r/india  Jan 27 '25

I got the point, that it says so in the constitution. I think you didn't get my point, that it's not relevant for today's conditions. The constitution has been amended so much that there is that old joke of a librarian replying "we don't stock periodicals" to someone who asked for the Indian constitution.

No intention to reside permanently but want to keep family ties: Take the OCI, it serves the purpose.

Like so many people said, OCI is just a lifelong visa. Yes, I admit there are policy issues related to voting. That is a hard problem to resolve, since ours is a representative democracy and non-residents don't have skin in the game when it comes to our electoral system. But just like how we Indians approach every policy problem, I say just kick that can down the road and let people vote in the constituency of their purported residential address in India. I, for one, am not going to vote anyway, and I know very few peers who do.

Anyway, in the grand scheme of things, it is just a mild inconvenience. I don't reside permanently in India, but I have no intention of renouncing Indian citizenship either. Not because I have any intention of permanently residing here ever in the future , but because of sentimental reasons. So there you go, people can go on living their entire lives without ever living here, but still keep their citizenship.

India should approach these things with extreme self-interest. Right now, it is in India's interest to bring in concurrent citizenship to incentivise rich and talented tech workers from fully severing any connection to the country.

Around 2 Lakh people leave Indian Citizenship every year
 in  r/india  Jan 27 '25

That's why it is an anachronism. It is not relevant for the current day and mores. There are people who would ideally like to split their time between two countries, because of family ties, nature of work or just personal preference. As a country with a high rate of emigration, it is in our favour to introduce concurrent citizenship.

It’s obvious people who renounce Indian citizenship have no intention to reside here.

What is this circular reasoning? A lot of people wouldn't renounce Indian citizenship if concurrent citizenship was possible.

Don't know about commercial cinema being lesser cinema, but this is a lesser video because of the annoying edits and inserts. This tiktokification of videos is worse than Balayya movies.
