Athletics/Recruiting Where could I go?

Preface: I have no illusions about my chances and of course will not be using reddit as reassurance if i can or cannot play. I just wanted to see what people outside of my coach, family and teammates think. And I just finished a lift so i’m not sitting on here when i could be training

I am in HS Right now and it has always been my dream to play in college. I’m curious what everyone thinks my chances are. As I am a junior, I am still working to improve and I truly believe I can get there. Obviously you don’t know much about my situation or life, so this is a blind test

Does that mean competition will be less for domestic students going forward?

Application Question Rigor vs GPA

I’m curious how much weight rigor holds.

Like for reference, I am on track to finish with pre calc, ODE, Linalg, Calc 1-3, Uniphysics 1-2, college physics, comp 1-2, pols 1-2, hist 1-2, gen chem 1, intro to econ, philosophy ethics, art app, and speech.

So if I’m finishing with a 3.7-3.9, how does that compare to people finishing calc 1 with a 4.0?

College Questions Waterloo Quant Traders?

Hi all, I am a senior in high school who likely will be at the University of Waterloo next year (math or Ee/ce degree). I am interested in Quant Trader roles, as I am quick at mental math, have done well in math contests, and enjoy games like Poker (I am not a genius at math however). I was wondering if anybody here goes to Waterloo or knows much about the recruitment for Quant Trading specifically at Waterloo, as I know it is very good for Quant Developer/SWE, but I am more interesting in trading or maybe research jobs. I looked on Linkedin and there definitely seemed to be a ton of CS majors as developers, but I didn't see as many traders from Waterloo.

I would appreciate any information, thank you!

ECs and Activities book passion project

hi :) i'm about to end junior high but yk they say the best time to prepare for university is now so?? i was thinking about writing a novel and having that as a passion project on my college resume. it's really more of an excuse to write and be able to call myself productive while doing it lol but i think introducing it as a passion project (that's pretty much what it is frankly; a project i'm passionate about) is a convenient intersection of my interests and plans for the future :D

it's just about my only option for a project since writing happens to be the only thing I've ever felt real passion for but I've seen people online ward away from doing it. i try not to rely too much on what i see on the internet since fallacies spread like wildfire but i don't have much to fall back on. i just wanted to know if pursuing it as a project is feasible and actually beneficial to me. i'm pretty sure i'd do it regardless but it would at least dissuade me from allocating ALL of my efforts to it. i have the general impression that passion projects should be related to your major or field of interest, and i know that i want to go into psychology or social work of some kind. writing novels seems a bit disconnected to that? it doesn't exactly highlight or utilize any traits integral to those practices, hence i'm worried that my project will have no or a negative impact on my applications.

i know i might have a lot of time left, but i'd rather not carry false hope that i can do something with my passion for a few more years. any insight would be appreciated :)

Emotional Support I can’t afford my dream college/and maybe not college at all without slaving away

I’m just sad and maybe need some support or encouragement because I got accepted into SCAD and I will never be able to afford to go. The state of the country isn’t helping either. It would make me need to take like 100k out in loans and I’d never make that. I want to work in animation and I’m so jealous of all the rich people that get to go to big art schools. I already tried the community college route, I got my AA for cheap out of pocket and I am planning to transfer but it really didn’t save me any money :/ I got the full Pell grant because I’m really poor and everything but I still can’t afford it. I’m trying to go to a different state school back in Illinois too and it’s way more affordable but still, no matter WHERE I go, an art degree that would benefit me I would need to work a job and save just to pay the difference that loans can’t cover :,( it’s so impossible to feel hope. I want art more than anything.

Advice Stuck between my in-state college or a out of state college… help!!

I can’t decide if I should go to my in-state college (Michigan state) or an oos college (Ohio State). I feel like OSU has better options and programs and I like it better, but MSU is cheaper. If I went to OSU, there’s a chance I’d have to take out 5k a year in loans.

I’m just so torn. I know graduating debt-free would be amazing, but I just prefer OSU so much more.

College Questions UC Davis or Georgetown?

I was accepted to Georgetown as a biology major and to UC Davis as an animal science major. I am currently planning on taking a pre-vet (or possibly pre-med) path, and I am trying to decide between these two schools.

This might sound crazy since UC Davis has one of if not the best program for pre-vets in the country. However, there are just so many things I don't like about Davis, especially the large size, quarter system, and apparently "boring" area. I'm not sure if I would be as academically successful there (due to the first two reasons), but I would have a lot of opportunities to work directly with animals.

At Georgetown, I don't know if I would receive any support as I try to apply to vet schools or if a school like Georgetown could still help provide a favorable outcome in that admissions process. It would likely be much harder to find opportunities to work with animals, but it would probably still be doable.

I'm also not 100% sure I want to be a vet, so I'm worried about making my decision based on a career goal that may very well change. However, I am 99.9% sure I will pursue something related to biology. I'm also considering pathology as an alternative career goal.

(Also note that cost is not a concern, as I'm incredibly fortunate that my parents have been building a college fund for my entire life and I got pretty good aid packages.)

College Questions Help me decide!

Hello,

Hope you all are having a wonderful day! I was just wondering if you could help me decide on where to go for the next four years. My choices right now are the University of Southern California and Brown University. Although I am unfathomably grateful to have gotten into both schools, I am still having a tough time deciding.

Please assume that I am a prospective engineering major, lives in California, and would be on full ride for both schools.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Advice UCI, UC Davis or USC? (as a bio major)

I'm stuck between UC Davis, UC Irvine, and USC-- any advice is welcomed!
I'm thinking of exploring R&D in the science fields, but here is the breakdown from my surface level research

USC (prestige)

pros

-private school; more support

-farther away from home

-connections for future jobs

-liberal arts (if i want to pursue an art minor)

cons
-competitive for STEM majors

-expensive (however, I am considered low income and first gen so maybe they'll give me better aid?)

-they gave me spring semester rather than fall

-most bio majors go into pre-med which im not sure if i want to go down that path

UC Davis (best vibes)
pros
-campus greenery + college towns

-research and career based

-strong bio programs

-vibes better

-better weather + air quality than LA

cons

-closer to home

-not as prestigious

-quarter system and not semester

UCI (middle ground?)

pros
-growing science programs and new science buildings

-campus greenery as well (but not as much as UCD)

-more collaborative and laid back

cons
-quarter system like UC Davis

(from my research UCI and UCD are pretty similar)

Advice How to choose a summer program for high schoolers

A lot of my students are beginning to hear back from summer programs they are considering. Some students are lucky enough to have multiple options to choose from, and others might have one option but are deciding if the cost and time are worth it.

Here’s what I want you to know:

Admissions is about storytelling.

Attending a summer program in and of itself will not have a major impact on your admission outcome. But remember, it doesn’t exist simply as a line in your activities section. It may provide material for an admissions essay down the road, perhaps about an academic interest, teamwork, or a challenge.

For example, imagine answering the UC prompt #6 (which, btw, I recommend you answer):

6. Think about an academic subject that inspires you. Describe how you have furthered this interest inside and/or outside of the classroom.

You might respond with an essay with a storyline like this:

I always enjoyed science classes, but didn’t understand the application/ that changed when I took AP Biology and did ___ lab and learned ___/ I had to learn more, so I attended ____ summer program where I was able to apply ___ to ___ and was surprised to learn ___/ these experiences together have solidified my interest in applying ___ principles of biology to a pre-medical track in college/ I’m particularly interested in continuing my investigation of ___ in college.

So, the program becomes part of your story as you make a case for admission.

It isn’t about achieving admission to a program and showing it off like a trophy, it’s about describing who you are as a learner/student/researcher/interesting person.

Because ultimately, admissions, and highly-selective admission in particular, is about storytelling. That is how admission offices make a subjective decision about who to admit between equally amazing and academically qualified students.

So, one way to think about your summer is to think about how any program, activity, job, volunteer position etc. would contribute to your story. It is also important to remember that this is only one perspective you need to consider. Cost, time, interest, fun, travel, family needs—there are many other perspectives besides admission that matter a lot too.

Good luck out there ✌️

Advice Cornell or Berkeley/LA (in-state) for Chem

Hey guys! Please help me figure out which school to choose. Cornell is ~93k (will prob need to take out loans after sophomore yr) and Berkeley/LA is ~47k. I'm not completely locked in for chem, so I'd like the option to potentially switch majors further down the line (maybe even pre-med in the future). I'm leaning towards Cornell, but idk if the cost is worth it. Please share your thoughts!

On another note, what is a good way to get more aid or scholarships?

College Questions CMU vs Tufts vs UGA vs UC Berkeley vs Michigan vs UNC Honors - Help Me!!

I am not sure where to commit too. I am either pre-law or pre-business don’t know yet. I am going to grad school after. I feel like all my schools have cons and I cannot decide. My intended major is public policy/ psychology. I am def more humanities person. I get financial aid from private schools. I swear I was rejected from all the schools that are more humanities based.

Tufts - Don’t like the vibe, don’t like campus, Boston is cold, 20k a year, lacks name recognition, ppl are not my type

CMU - extremely rigorous, too CS/stem focused, no school spirit, don’t like campus, never heard of people going to law school after, 40k a year

UNC Honors - 85% of ppl from North Carolina, ik in state folks who got like 1300 on their SAT’s and got in and just ppl who didn’t work as hard in hs and they have to pay 6k while I have to pay 60k. What sense does that even make.

UMich - 80k a year. Too cold. Huge. Far from home.

UC Berkeley- 90k a year. Huge. Going to grad school after. Very far from home.

UGA - in state but was waitlisted for the honors college, so not going there after I worked my a** off in hs.

‘I was waitlisted at WashU and Stanford so praying I get into one of those. But out of the choices I do have, where should I go?

Advice Pre-College Programs

Hi! I'm currently a sophomore in high school and was wondering the value of pre-college programs to universities. I've applied to Notre Dame and SMU's summer programs for engineering and am currently working my way through Cornell and RICE's. Are pre-college programs really gonna help me or are they a waste of time and money?

College Questions Is HTVSP worth?

Basically title. I am wondering if it is worth the 5k and if it has any effect on collage apps. Seen mixed opinions. Also if not the program, does the internship itself look good? Like could I say I was a virtual intern and leave out HTVSP?

College Questions uchicago vs cornell

im an environmental science major with a focus in marine biology. i’m research focused and for undergraduate i’m stuck between these two.

i was thinking i’d go to cornell and apply to uchicago for grad school but i know how selective it is and idk if i wanna risk the chance to not be accepted in the future to either.
