To The People On This Sub Freaking Out…

I just went back to 2007-2009 and read some of the forum posts in the Boglehead thread. They were saying the exact same thing people here are worried about. “What if this is different?” “What if X?” “What if Y?” — Look, you should NEVER have invested money you need to touch in any way in a short time frame. If you did, that’s on you but every investing strategy for the layman states that there must be a long time horizon for domestic and international equity investments.

Word of advice: STOP LOOKING AT THE COST OF THE ETF OR MUTUAL FUND. What helps me stay rational minded is changing the focus from how much an ETF costs to how many shares I currently own of that ETF. That matters a whole lot more in the future.

Best of luck - do not sell.

Investing Questions Is it worth selling everything now, and DCAing in bigger chunks over the next few months?

Hi guys, I was wondering if it would be worth selling right now, and DCAing back in straight away, as a strategy to "normalize" future losses

Keep in mind that I 100% believe in the bogle strategy, the idea isn't to wait until the market gets better.

Say I have 10k, and I put in 100 every month. What I'm proposing is to sell all 10k, then put it back in monthly at 1100 straight away.

In theory, if the market has a long way to go until the bottom, then atleast what I've already bought wont drop hard from the current prices as I'm dcaing, on the other hand, if the market will improve then I'm buying upwards.

Ofcourse the country argument is that I anyway bought these stocks dcaing, so maybe this will all have basically no impact.

Looking forward to hearing from you guys

Investing Questions 401k rollover to IRA - Pros and Cons

Upvotes

Mom inherited Dad's 401k, roughly a year and a half ago, and now the plan is planning a move, this summer, from Vanguard to Empower.

I haven't been thrilled with the hoops and poor service Vanguard has imposed, but blame the employer plan rules more than Vanguard, as I have my own 401ks with them without all the drama.

I'm very unfamiliar with Empower and wonder if I should take this opportunity to rollover and consolidate into one of her IRAs at Schwab (presumably the traditional, or a new rollover one).

From what I understand, 401ks have more protections from potential judgements than an IRA. Not expecting anything like that to happen but you never know what life will throw at you.

Are there any other pros and cons of doing a rollover?

I want to think before I leap but need some support on what to even consider.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

VFORX - Annual Dividends

Since this fund pays dividends at the end of the calendar year, is it convenient to transfer all your assets to this fund just before the x date to get the dividends and then repurchase your other options? It feels like cheating...what am I missing?

Investing Questions Is a three fund portfolio still the recommended option currently?

We all know currently the market is in a (hopefully temporary) downturn.

I am looking to put in another 30K into my solo 401K so I need to decide how I'm going to split this money.

Currently I only have 100% VTSAX about 200K but was looking to potentially do the three fund portfolio and add in both VTIAX and VBTLX with this incoming money.

I'm far away from retirement age so time horizon isn't an issue for me. Retirement will probably be about 30 years away assuming it is still 65 in the future.

For this 30K what is a recommend split? 70% VTSAX

20 or 25% VTIAX

5 or 10% VBLTX ? Or is it better to just not do bonds right now due to my age?

Note - this is through ascensus so I only have the mutual funds options not ETFs

Also I have to pay $20 fee per year per mutual funds so idk if that makes any difference

Investing Questions Not trying to “ Time” the market

I decided two weeks ago to move my IRA from an investment advisor once I saw the light of becoming a Boglehead. I initiated the ACAT a week ago today and all my assets were in my fidelity account last Thursday. My plan is of course to go to the 3 index fund strategy, like I already did in my company 401 k plan. The question is do I sell everything now ( I have winners and losers in the IRA but with an overall gain) and initiate the 3 fund strategy ASAP ? With it being in my IRA I am obviously not worrying about any tax consequences. I am a 60 year old that earns a decent income and have no plans on retiring till I’m 70 as I am in good health and enjoy what I do for a living. I know we are in for a bumpy ride over the next few months as well😀.

Thanks

Investing Questions VT and chill approach - how long does it take to rebalance?

I started my investment journey a year and a half ago and came across this sub during the peak of the bull run from the S+P 500. I decided to diversify further and opt for the VT and chill approach which I am glad I did with the benefit of hindsight!

Now VT is still quite heavily titled towards the US as it stands and given the volatility of the market when would we expect VT to tilt more towards ex US? Given what trump is doing I would be more comfortable diversifying in the world index even further.

Need help investing

Hello! I'm new to investing and but I've read in this forum and I've recently gotten some money and was getting ready to invest but I still just don't know how to go about it. I do want to invest money that can lay around for 20 years at low cost and low maintenance. I was told to buy this MSCI world ETF (Isin: LU0274208692) by a friend. But she is in Germany and I don't know which bank I can use in the US to make such a transaction. Or how to easily do this with any bank. I only have a bank account with a local bank. I would be grateful for a recommendation. Thank you!

Investing Questions FLOT

Be gentle, please - put some short-term cash in FLOT rather than SGOV, what is my true downside exposure? Dropped 1.44% Friday.

Is it an interest rate technical move or is it reflective of concerns on the underlying bonds?

Late start on retirement planning...advice on managing roth ira and brokerage Porfolios

I'm going to stay maxing out my roth ira and putting as much thereafter into a brokerage. How best to build these Porfolios? More specifically, should or how should the be diversified. Ex: if I'm doing VTI, VXUS and AVUV in the brokerage, should the same be in the roth? Any advice on how to best manage the two is appreciated

Investing Questions Citibank vs JP Morgan Chase

Comparing Citibank versus JP Morgan Chase as an all-inclusive organization for banking, credit card, investment needs. Curious what people's experiences are with using their investment Services and comparing both companies against each other. Yes, I know Fidelity, vanguard, Schwab or the recommended go-to's, however my question still stands please.

What’s actually happening when the market abruptly tanks?

Prices immediately dropped as Trump was mid-tariff announcement. Are people just sitting there listening and then selling in anticipation of everyone else selling?

And what are they planning to do with the cash? Puts, hold and buy “the bottom”, something else?

Investing Questions How to invest weekly if you can’t buy fractional shares of VOO

Upvotes

I am 20 years old and relatively new to investing. I want to start dumping $75/week into VOO through my Charles Schwab rIRA. However, it doesn’t allow me to purchase any fractional shares of VOO. What should I invest in, because I don’t want my $75 sitting around as cash until I get enough to buy a share of VOO (around $400 rn)

Do you/should you adjust Contributions with Scheduled Wage Increases?

As the title says, do you guys and galls adjust your Contribution Percentage with scheduled raises? I work for NYC and Just received a 3.5% wage increase. I currently have my 457 funded at 25% (which should put me at maxing it out around June). After that I plan on contributing 10% to my 401k (BC why not). I Still have one more contracted wage increase of 4% in March 1, 2026.

Would y'all adjust your contribution with the raises or just stay the course and stick to the plan and see it as maxing it out earlier than intended?

Investing Questions Investing on Foreing Index Funds

Im interested in investing in foreing index funds. Do they have the same applicable concept as discussed here and the books? There are multiple things that I have never thought I should rely on but now with the current political environment they seem truly threatened. Social security, perhaps much more costly medicare medicaid and although a bogglehead weathers the storms whcih I've been doing, did Mr Bogle account for autocracy in his discussions? If the concpet is the same, then I'd just need to understand if taxes are the same if gains are unrealized. Im looking at Canada as my potential target. Any insight on resources are welcomed. Thanks.

VTWAX - When does the actual buy occur (on vanguard)

It would be my first time buying VTWAX , I read that the buy is triggered at the end of the day? And the price doesn’t update minute by minute hour by hour -

This is all new to me as I’m used to VT.

Is there transparency to the price? Does it track VT or sort? Also how do they even allow so many buys at one time of the day .

Thanks fellas

Investing Questions Any Help with buying into Europe?

Hey guys, little context first. I work with a retired, very well off Wall Street guy at my job and we will talk investing every now and then (although lately, quite a bit). He told me he and, an extremely wealthy friend of his, are very interested in Europe right now and he suggested that it was time I bought a Euro centered Vanguard fund. Couple questions: Is it time to invest in Europe? I am torn between VTWAX and VGK, any thoughts or neither of them?

I'd like to pull the trigger tomorrow morning although I'm going to assume this whole week is going to be a blood bath so I can wait as well. I'm either going to go ahead with this Euro plan or invest in my normal funds / Roth IRA.

Thanks everyone!

Did anyone have problems with Vanguard's brokerage on Friday 4/4?

I've had a weird experience with VG brokerage which makes me simultaneously doubt myself and doubt VG. I wanted to liquidate 1000 shares of a regional bank ETF on Friday so I put in a market order for 500 shares and then another market order for 500 shares after the first went through. The problem is that the second order just sort of hung out and didn't fill. After 5 minutes of it not filling and watching plenty of volume I canceled it. It did not cancel or fill all day and this morning 4/7 I see that it filled this morning. I find this very disturbing almost like I am being gaslit as with their revamped website order duration is day so I don't understand it being in force over the weekend into Monday, I don't understand why it didn't fill immediately when it was a market order. It makes me think I am losing my mind or fat fingering but I cannot see how fat fingering could have done this.

It makes me seriously consider abandoning VG where I've had accounts for 20 years.

Anyone else had this kind of experience?

Investing Questions Staying the path, but a little more aggressive?

So I’ve been a Boglehead since 18, but I also daytraded on the side for about 5 years, at which point I decided to stick to Boglehead full time as, like many, I realized it wasn’t worth it (not to mention I would’ve performed better doing 100% Boglehead).

My question is this. I have a set monthly deposit, a set semimonthly 401k, and a set, Roth IRA contribution.

I had some dry powder which I’ve been DCA on this dip, which frankly has been stressful as the dip keeps on dipping, and gives me PTSD from daytrading, which led me to think about it from a different perspective.

If you were young (20’s) and not responsible for other people financially. Would you continue your strategy, but up your monthly contributions in the short term during a market pullback like this? This would mean either working more for more income, or cutting costs where feasible and essentially operating slightly outside of one’s comfort zone.

Once the market rebounds, I’d imagine lowering my contributions back down to what is comfortable.

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts. Thank you!

Adjusted My Vanguard Portfolio in Light of Possible Trump Tariffs 2025— Feedback on New Allocation?

With the potential return of Trump and a renewed wave of tariffs, I recently restructured my Vanguard long-term portfolio to better align with expected trends — including domestic reshoring, reduced global exposure, and a tilt toward growth-oriented U.S. sectors.

I am 30 yrs old. Automatic investments biweekly. This portfolio is aimed at long-term capital growth with strategic rebalancing. I’ve also updated my cost basis method to Specific Identification to reduce capital gains taxes when switching funds. Please advise.

Prívate equity

Hi! First, hold the tomatoes; I really a boring, undaunted BH; however, I want to invest 10% in PE. I started a SDIRA with Alto, but, compared with a brokerage account, it’s a lot of work (and expensive) to maintain. If I have a Series 7 (or regardless), what’s the easiest way to invest in PE?
