Driftscussion Steering wheel hand placement

Hi all, I was watching some drift clips and a question popped up in mind.

I've noticed the two things in my limited experience of watching clips/videos online;

  1. Drivers who let go of the steering wheel during the self steer part of the drift and catches it while maintaining both hands at 3 and 9 o'clock position.
  2. Drivers who follow the self steer with either one of their hands whilst the other is at 3 or 9 o'clock position.

I personally tend to do the first one and I would correct it with the gas pedal or some counter steer. As for the 2nd one I tend to see it on drivers with smoother transitions and drifts with minimal counter steer and seems like they've got insane throttle control. It's more aesthetically pleasing to see this technique as well. But I've seen both used in street drifters to grassroot drivers and all the way to pro level drifting.

Is this a matter of preference, skill level, car or suspension setup? or all of the above? I'm still trying to understand things here and I'm building up my seat time. So do educate me on this please :D

Finished my third event. No handbrake, stock power, just a mini mantis kit for the C5, coils, and some cooling upgrades. Still got a lot to learn but this has to be the most fun I've ever had in a car.

Driftscussion Question for drifters (E36)

Been looking for E36 M3 for a while now and see majority of them are abused (expected?). My question is: what usually goes bad suspension and chassis wise on drift cars? Can there be a permanent damage to it or i can simply replace bunch of parts and make it stock? This particular one hasn't been modified on the interior, just added turbo and whatever driveshaft things you guys replace.. Thanks!

Driftscussion Question about Track Days

So I was thinking of going to a track for the first time on an open drift day coming up to get more expercince sliding my car as my only experince consists of empty parking lots, snow days, rain days, intersections in the middle of nowhere, and a couple hairpin turns. I'm very careful where I practice so i'm not putting others at risk only myself. Because of this i have already in learning had to replace a control arm.

Again though i'd like to be legal and go to a track but it dawned on me what if someone hits me on accident or trys to tandem with me and bumps my car, i get it comes with the sport and I cant be mad about it but i'm not trying to drift to learn styleish slides, i'm trying to learn more in a rally sence so I can take turns faster. Any advice or thoughts? I was really looking forward to going but now i'm not so sure.

Video More caterham drifting

Since people seemed to like my previous video, here is the “in car” shot. Sorry about the beeping, that’s the traction control getting angry with me. Things to note are the home-made g-meter on my dash showing just below 1g laterally. As it’s a race car I have a hi speed racebox mini s strapped to the cage just above the mirror. That’s what is giving the gps signal to race chrono which is then syncing the video from the GoPro to provide the overlay. Very neat. You can see how little lock I have. The car is running a quick rack so just under 2 turns lock-to lock. Safety sticker was supplied by https://www.instagram.com/driftbricker and has successfully protected me for about 3 years.

Ok. So the annoying beeping was the indicators. They’re easy to catch.

Video Drifting a totally inappropriate Caterham 7

Hey there.

I’ve been doing some drifting at Santa Pod DWYB this year and I’d like to improve. Anyone got any advice for me?

The car is a 2 litre, 225bhp caterham which weighs 650kg (around 5000 bananas for you imperial folk) with me in it with the weight mostly at the rear as it’s front-mid-engined. I’ve been running super cheap 205/60r14 tyres and ended up dropping them to around 20psi to get more grip. I’ve also run some old r888rs in 215 width at about 40psi (double the usual pressure) but found the switch from no grip to grip really spikey. With all that power and low grip and weight I can unstick the rears just using the throttle in 3rd gear which is fun, but I’m struggling with left foot braking to slow myself into corners whilst sideways (I end up just spinning).

I think I’m too also sticking to the racing line trying to hit the apexes which leaves me struggling to keep the drift through the straights. I probs need to aim for a more mid track wider line. The car is obviously not an ideal choice but then neither is a landrover and the Avin the Crack boys seem to be enjoying it. There’s some more vids on insta https://www.instagram.com/uber.niche/ including some in car stuff so you can see how hectic it is.

Things I’m in the process of working on:

  • More lock- in gonna get some shorter steering arms cnc’d. I’ve reverse engineered the design from 3d scans of stock ones. I reckon I can get a fair bit more before hitting wishbones.
  • A hydro! - I’ve bought a cheap AliExpress one to see if it fits and if there’s room to mount it Obviously this is a terrible idea. AliExpress hydraulic joints blowing on track spraying me with boiling fluid at 120mph would be bad.
  • Better tyres with more grip - I’m a bit limited as my drift wheels are an unusual size 205/60r14 which no one makes wider or gripper tyres for (I can get r888r but i think that’s just too much). I think some nankang ns20 might be better. At the moment I’m mid-throttle for almost everything cos of lack of grip. I don’t really wanna be bouncing off the limiter as it’s a pretty highly strung engine as it is and I’m on the limit of what the rods will take
  • Just getting good - have a look at my insta, tell me what I’m doing wrong. Unfortunately someone getting in the car with me is tricky as adding an 80kg person makes the car 20% heavier and it’s all on the rear axle so…

All advice and questions welcome.

Please leave the “OMG just buy a 325 and weld the diff you knobber” comments. I have a 130i that can drift but my 7 is way more awesome (it has ITBs and spits flames)

Cheers J
