2025 Salary Thread - Summary Data + Findings

Had some spare time this week so I compiled compensation data from the latest 2025 salary thread.

Before I jump in, here are some notes on how I treated the underlying data:

  • n = 97 US-based respondents. I typically excluded fields where n < 3. Sorry, Canadian friends.
  • Title: I used the generalized title and ignored specializations (e.g. Strategic Finance vs. FP&A)
  • YOE: I used total YOE where available, except where prior experience was clearly not relevant
  • Bonus: I took the target bonus where available, otherwise I used the average of the range
  • Equity: I used best judgement to determine whether this was an annual or 4 year grant
  • Other: I ignored benefits, one-off comp and anything else funky that I couldn't decipher

-----

Okay, onto the headlines.

Compensation by title
Even at the FA level, average compensation was at the low 6-figure mark. Senior Managers were the first cohort to report average compensation >$200K, and Senior Directors were the first to report average compensation >$300K.

Title Cash (Base + Bonus) Comp Total (Cash + Equity) Comp n
FA $96K $102K 9
SFA $122K $133K 28
Manager $163K $172K 30
Sr. Manager $211K $232K 11
Director $226K $247K 9
Sr. Director $302K $353K 4
VP $309K $398K 6

-----

Other insights... I couldn't figure out the best way to import lots of data into a reddit thread, so I've attached some pretty janky slides. Sorry - not my best work but hopefully better than nothing.

Bonuses
90% of respondents reported receiving bonuses. FAs, SFAs and Managers reported receiving bonuses worth ~15% of their base salary, Sr. Managers and Directors typically reported 25%, and Sr. Directors and above reported 30 - 40%.

Equity
A third of respondents reported receiving equity compensation, of which >50% were in Tech. For these respondents, equity compensation typically accounted for 20% of total compensation. This ratio was fairly consistent across all levels of seniority.

Location
There were observable bumps in comp between LCOL > M/HCOL > VHCOL. However, there was relatively little differentiation between MCOL and HCOL. ~25% of respondents reported working fully remote; remote workers reported 5 - 10% higher compensation than their in-office peers.

Industry
Respondents in Tech reported the highest average cash compensation at $188K. This group also topped total compensation ($219K) given their predisposition to receive equity, followed by energy ($210K)

YOE
Respondents typically hit $100K+ by Year 2, and approached ~$200K by Year 8. Respondents reported consistent title progression at 2.0 - 2.5 YOE intervals from FA up to Senior Manager, but progression was more varied at the Director level and above.

---

Let me know if you have any questions about the data and I'll do my best to answer. Sorry again for the janky attachments.

Oh, one other thing... The ranges at each level were pretty wide; in some cases the max was 100% higher than the min. If you figure out that you're on the lower end of your level / YOE / etc. - remember firstly that this doesn't define your worth unless you let it, and secondly to use this as a catalyst for good :)

What would you recommend is the best for a job in this field? MBA, CFA, some type of high level business school program in a FP&A?

Pivoting out of FP&A, does anybody have any ideas?

Hey guys, I am looking for some advice/ideas. Currently I am a Sr. Financial Analyst for a tech firm. I do the very typical financial duties like financial modeling (Revenue), ad hoc modeling, forecasting, close, business partnering etc.

I find that the business partnering part to be the most challenging because of my personality. I don't think my personality is strong enough to be an influential partner. I have no problem doing the data, modeling, presenting the numbers, dashboarding but when I get push back from business partners I tend to shrink and have no comeback to back up my points further. I am not sure if this is something I can fix or if I should just move onto another role.

I am currently exploring other types of roles that can at least pay $150k with my FP&A background with minimal effort in the pivot. I do have aspirations to make at least $200k but I don't know what's a good pivot would with my background and personality.

If you guys have experienced a similar pivot or have any thoughts as long as they are constructive, that would really be appreciated!

Anyone else noticing eroding WLB across all industries?

Seems like more cuts, more skeleton crews, and longer hours. Even friends in finance in various industries are seeing the same trends. We've had two terms with nothing lined up and I don't blame them. How are you guys navigating this with your teams?

FP&A Newbie

Hey Everyone,

I am officially a year into my FP&A career after switching over from Tech Sales.

I enjoy this work a lot more than i did tech sales, so i’m thinking i’m gonna make a career out of it.

I was a BA Major with an Accounting Minor in college. Also have an MBA for what it’s worth. (shitty college i wanted to play D3 Football)

Point is, i never learned DCF, WACC, Budgeting, Forecasting, Variance Analysis, Accruals, xyz finance terms ever in my life.

This first year was just heavy reporting and fine tuning my excel skills. I also work in Adaptive & Tableau.

Although, my fear is that if i were ever laid off from this current job than i wouldn’t have the skillset to obtain another job in FP&A.

QUESTION: Are there (free) online courses i can take to understand all that corporate finance has to know?

QUESTION 2: How far along in your career did you feel like you mastered the general job description every company throws on job descriptions?

QUESTION 3: What’s the best first step? Modeling the big 3? Learning budgeting, forecasting? Learning other tools such as Power BI, SQL, or something else?

I have a job interview next week for a FBP Marketing role, partnering with the Marketing Director in a mid size company.

I’ve not been involved in marketing finance significantly in the past, what are the key considerations / deliverables / risks to manage in this type of role?

Private to public on your Resume

I’ve worked for public companies until now, recently joined a private company with annual revenue in the single digit BN

The writing is on the wall that we will IPO soon

My boss raves about how great this will look on our resume that we were there for the transition. I think he’s over egging it a bit

Career change

Currently an independent financial advisor and considering a career change. I like it but I’ve considered moving to FP&A. What’s the career actually like? I have a masters in finance from an accredited university and have finance experience with individuals and business owners but just on the planning side. How would I find a reputable company that hires entry level?

getting a market rate adjustment

Hi everyone, I’m currently a Senior Financial Analyst at a Tech company, where I’ve been for the past three years. This is my first role out of college—I was promoted into my current position after starting with the company.

About a year and a half ago, I brought up the topic of a raise with my manager, but at the time, I was told there wasn’t any budget for it. My starting salary was $70K, and I’m now at $80k. I don’t have a bonus and I have received ‘exceeding expectations’ on all of my reviews.

Lately, I’ve been researching market rates for similar roles here in NYC and it seems like I may be underpaid by around $30K. I’ve started applying to other opportunities, but I haven’t had much traction so far. I’m looking for advice on how to approach this conversation with my manager—specifically around asking for a market rate adjustment. Any insight or tips would be really appreciated.

First FPandA role! Need advice please!!

Hey everyone! I just passed the first round (HR screen) for an entry level analyst role at an e-commerce retailer and I’m moving on to the second round with the Senior Manager.. There are 3 more rounds total, and one of them will be a case study (HR mentioned it’ll likely be Excel-based financial analysis, but they weren’t 100% sure)

This is my first analyst role so I’m not totally sure what to expect

  • What kind of questions usually come up when interviewing with a Senior Manager?
  • Will it be more technical or behavioral at this stage? If f technical how to prep please?
  • And how should I prep for the Excel case study? Any resources or practice tips?

I’m really excited about this opportunity and want to be as prepared as possible

would really appreciate any advice or insight. Thank youuuu

Performance Management vs Forecast Accuracy?

How do FP&A professionals balance the need for simple, easy-to-understand forecast metrics with the need for accuracy?

For instance, my business partner prefers seeing a forecast of 1,000,000 users acquired per month for the year because it's straightforward for them to calculate and track variances against that number, along with the associated revenue. However, I understand that the actual number of monthly users acquired could vary between 700k and 1.2M, based on historicals, which would lead to significant fluctuations in revenue compared to the forecast.

How to tell if an interview went well

Having trouble gauging how an interview went - it was for an FP&A role and with two people in the team.

The interview was TOUGH because as well as digging through my CV, they wanted to understand my rationale for answers in the take away case study, and gave me on-the-spot current issues within the company and day-to-day/operational problems and how I would solve these problems.

They largely agreed with my rationale/solutions but I stumbled and stuttered a lot at 2-3 points because the issues were complex and didn’t have an easy answer.

So I’m really unsure how I did - they said some things I found encouraging at the end but also don’t want over analyse this.

Seeking advice on career transition/resume

I graduated from a state college in 2024, only had one internship (mostly just cold calling), and currently working as a tax preparer.

I know my experience is not sufficient, and was wondering if there're any positions I could start with and help transition to FP&A? Also appreciate any advice or comment on my resume.

Thank you very much!

Help: simple way to calculate impact of price change and volume change on revenue

Hello everyone,

I have a dataset for product revenue over two periods, the amount of products sold and the price per product.

in period 1, the revenue was 375, with 150 units sold for 2.5 per unit

in period 2, the revenue was 600, with 200 units sold for 3 per unit.

I want to know how much of the revenue increase can be attributed to the price increase, and how much can be attributed to the volume/quantity increase. Those 2 together should explain 100% of the change.

What is the simplest approach to get the correct answer?

Financial Modeling Practice

I am currently doing the BIWS course. I am on the 3-statement modeling module, but I feel like I need more practice with it. Are there any other resources that provide models that I can work on myself, but also provide a video/completed excel sheet so I can see what I'm doing right or wrong?

FP&A one-way interview

Working through a job hunt (while maybe surviving a PiP), hundreds of applications, 3 call backs / interviews, and 1 offer that's not my first choice. I will likely accept the offer, but the start date is a month out, so I can keep searching in the meantime.

Just got another interview request, but it's a one way, record myself interview. Im not a fan of this idea. The job offer i got was all in person meetings. The two that i didn't get, were all virtual interviews.

What have been your experiences with these record yourself interviews?

Roast my Resume

I’m looking for Senior Manager, Associate Director, or Director roles.

Have had very little traction so please roast my resume! I need to make it better.

Just a note: the formatting in “Major City, EU” under experience and education is funky just on this copy. It’s not actually like that.

I got laid off from consulting and now looking to transition to FP&A at the Manager level. The problem is that I have not been getting any interviews.

I figured that my background in strategy and finance would be a match for FP&A. Please give me some honest feedback. Thank you

Programs to test resume?

Does anyone have a recommendation of a software tool I could use to see how my resume would get through AI screeners?

I’ve been applying to lots of jobs (was laid off recently), and for several of the roles, I’ve been getting a negative response about 24 hrs later, and it’s always sent at a weird time. I’m assuming my resume is not making it through whatever AI program those companies are using.

Planning on revamping, but is there a program that would allow me to test my resume before submitting?

CFO wants new employee to present (not great) budget fixes to BoD, doesn’t understand what she’s looking at.

$100M revenue; 200-300 U.S. person company

CFO is very removed from the budgeting process. Hasn’t opened the model once. I am the only other finance employee, but I only joined 6 months ago and had to rush the budgeting process because the previous finance team quit.

The budget is not good. It is fine. But it’s high level, and roughly an assumption driven bottoms up build.

The BoD does not like it.

The BoD feels that pieces of analysis are missing before it can be approved.

I start working on these adjustments and new work, mind you, it’s a lot for one person and I want to get this done quick so the BoD approves it and we can move on.

My CFO doesn’t seem interested in reviewing the changes and has made it clear they just want the work done and complete but the CFO doesn’t really understand any of the changes. They have deferred to my judgement on everything and want me to present to the BoD…

…She is fucking me, right? This seems insane to me. CFO is shirking responsibility for the budget faults?

Am i wrong to be skeptical here? If i’m right, anyone have any guidance on how to move forward?

Hard to find entry level SFA roles?

It feels like every SFA role requires 5+ years of experience. How are people finding entry level SFA roles? The pipeline from analyst to SFA is rough.

Edit: For those trying so hard to misunderstand me, when i say entry level i mean first time doing a role at that level. If that’s still hard for you guys to understand then you have bigger problems😊
