training Another Great Day At Sig Sauer Academy

My wife and I decided last summer that we wanted to exercise our 2A rights but do so responsibly. We are fortunate to live near the Sig Sauer Academy in New Hampshire so we’ve been able to avail ourselves of their outstanding facilities and training staff.

We completed Handgun 101 in October, Pistol Mounted Optics 102 in January and today we did Handgun 103.

I cannot say enough about the professionalism of their staff and facilities. To top it all off, you get a very generous discount to use in their Flagship Store as well as an additional 10% off follow up courses.

If you have the chance to train with them, I’d encourage you to do so!

I made my first post in this thread shortly after I bought my Rock Island TM22 Standard. I’m not certain I had even fired it yet.

I’ve had the privilege of enjoying a few range days since my first post. My shooting partner and me made some low-grade targets out of cardboard, painters tape, and marker. This specific target was 20-25 yards out, resting against a particle board wall. I tried head shots (specifically aiming for the area from the eyes down to the blue “mouth”) and center mass shots (the blue box, including the tape itself.) I was pretty satisfied with the results. How do you think this very new newbie did?

ammo Please tell me about aluminum cased 9mm ammo

Late last night I was doom scrolling and thought I found a good deal on 1000 rounds of CCI Blazer brass ammo. However, this morning I discovered that it is the aluminum cased variety. I have zero experience shooting this. Does anyone have experience shooting this? I trust CCI to make good ammo, but I see a lot of conflicting info about aluminum cased ammo. Thanks in advance

After considering all the comments from my recent post, I finally made up my mind which pistol to buy. I went to a pawn shop yesterday and I saw the pistol and I fell in love with it. Price was the same as it was online so it made since to buy a new pistol!

discussion On the fence

I joined this sub around January, and have found the perspectives offered here really enlightening and thoughtful, as well as thought provoking. As someone who until this moment in history never considered gun ownership, I wanted to share my dilemma and see what people had to offer for thoughts.

I have been a progressive all my life. I was taught that guns were "bad" from a young age. I was born in the mid 70s, my parents were active in the civil rights movement and anti war. Guns were weapons; we were peaceful.

I am a student of history, and Jewish, and have often pondered what I would do were I to be faced with the kind of threats my ancestors faced. I have been watching in horror as our country embraced fascism. Unmarked masked state agents arrested the Tufts student blocks from my home. I have never wanted to own a gun, been quite terrified of (sometimes awed by) their power. I believe that guns increase the risk for owners and anyone around them. I don't think a good guy with the gun is the answer to a bad guy with a gun, as that has been disproven in many school shooting examples. And yet...

I don't want to wish I had gotten a weapon of protection for my family when I had the chance. And so last weekend I took a safety course and applied for my LTC in Massachusetts. I found it quite scary to know how many people are carrying. I plan to return to the range to try out some 9mm pistols. But I still do not see myself as a gun owner, and cannot imagine a scenario where I would kill another person. I would rather give away food, my television, whatever is needed by the desperate than engage in taking a life. Those who I fear most are now carrying badges and I'm certainly not about to take on a group of ICE agents. Still, there is a voice inside that says why not be prepared... but prepared for what?

I'd love to know why you have purchased a gun and why, and in what specific situations you imagine you might have to engage in using it. No judgements I promise. And thanks in advance for helping me sort this out.

gear Dual Use Ear Muffs?

Hi all! I'm going to see a concert soon and need some solid ear protection. I've tried so many different in-ear buds to reduce sound and while all have worked to varying degrees, I'm autistic and the sensation of something in my ear makes me more prone to melt downs. I don't have this issue with ear muffs/other over ear protection. If you use over ear protection for concerts or practice: do you know of any over ear protectors that let you still hear the music with good quality?

Here's how that fits into this sub: the only thing I can think of is Walker ear muffs/other gun range ear muffs, but the ones I've tried before have a very crackly sound quality. I'd love if the ear muffs I get for this could be repurposed for gun ranges when I'm not at concerts too, but obviously sound quality isn't really the priority for people there.

guns Follow Up to Handgun Suggestion Request - Final Four

Post image

I went to the range to test out the following pistols after getting advice here, at the range and doing some research online: 1) Springfield Echelon 2) Sig Sauer P226 3) HK VP9 4) CZ SP-01

The picture is the target after testing out a full mag for each pistol above at 12 feet.

I thought I would love the CZ based on handling the gun in the store but I just didn’t vibe with it while shooting it. There’s two shots that went way above the target poster in the picture.

The HK was nice but I didn’t like the paddles for the mag release.

I really like the P226 and Echelon equally. Ultimately I want what’s safe and a good first handgun.

What is this subreddit’s advice? The guys at the range said the P226 was battle tested but more expensive.

discussion Nervous about going to the range as a trans person.

My brother and I recently bought our first guns, a Savage Axis .30-06 and a Savage Stevens 12ga. We proudly got them used and I'm exited to learn how to care for and use them. I come from a very anti-gun background, so I'm still nervous about the whole thing, but guns are pretty normal in the culture I've transplanted to, plus with the way things are going politically, I feel safer just having them in the house.

I contributed financially, but the guns are in my brother's name just to make things simple as I have not changed my name or gender marker yet. My license still says F and my birth name even though I pass and live as male. I am currently in the process of changing my documents, but it could take months and I'd rather not wait that long to start training. Has anyone been through this before? Am I making it out to be a bigger issue than it is? I feel unsafe in republican spaces but am usually not flagged as suspicious to them since I'm a passing white man, but the moment anyone asks for my ID, I'll be sweating bullets (no pun intended).

Thanks in advance, and any first time owner advice is much appreciated.

question Hat suggestions?

To break up the (perfectly valid) doomsday posts, I thought I’d ask for people’s suggestions for range hats. I’m leaning towards an army cap-ish style. I’ve been meaning to get one for a while, but I’ve been procrastinating actually getting one. That is, until earlier this week. A friend was shooting his Garand, and a .30-06 casing ejected straight up from his rifle, dinged off the target rail mechanism, and rebounded to lodge between his eyeglasses and face.

Yeah, I think it’s time to stop procrastinating 😅

events Protest

Hi Friends - headed to a protest tomorrow. I have my CCW and carry most of the time in public. I was going to leave my BG2.0 at home, my husband wants me to take it with me. I’m not sure if I’m ready to take on the responsibility of carrying at a “protest”. Any thoughts or guidance?
