I can confirm that Sony is especially terrible when it comes to account recovery.
They make you jump through hoops to proof the account is yours and when you've done that they ask for the serial number of the Playstation you made the account on. Now, if that happens to be a PS3 you sold 15 years ago they basically say "We can't help you" and hang up.
If they call back, they have closed the ticket and refuse to help you.
I can attest to this. My old PSN account from the PS3 days is in my old email that still exists, with my real name, and I have tried several times to recover it, and they've always denied me. I don't know the recovery questions because my brother in law made the PSN account for me, and he doesn't remember them. I'm so pissed about this because I'm pretty sure I had the Platinum trophies in inFamous 1 and 2, or was very close to getting them, and my current account has barely any trophies for either game.
Yeah, basically. Honestly at the time it didn't bother me, but around 2020, 2021, and all the recent bullshit with Helldivers 2 and forcing PSN accounts, I started actively hating Sony and slowly moved away from their platform altogether. Got a passable gaming laptop in 2020 and finally cleaned up the small backlog of games I had and wanted to play on my PS4 before selling it. Now I have a Steam Deck too, and am a fully PC-based gamer. I would go so far as to unlink my PSN account from some of my cross-platform games (ie, Genshin Impact, Warframe) but they don't give me the option and I worry that deleting my PSN account altogether will affect those accounts in some way, so I'm just leaving my account there with 2FA on and mostly ignoring any PSN emails and notifications.
Sony is DOG SHIT when dealing with account details. Some degenerate with the same super uncommon firstlastname registered my firstlastname@ email domain on their PlayStation which prevents ME from registering with my own actual email. I've been on the phone with them ~14 times and it's always "yea we will solve this for you" and they never do.
Whenever I have an issue that I need Sony support for, they'll usually tell me it's impossible or that they can't do it. So over the course of a year I'll just open up chats with them until I get an employee that's actually competent, they'll fix my issue in 5 minutes. It's taken me weeks, months, and for even over a year for one issue where every week I was cycling through customer support agents until I found one that could help me. They're absolutely useless.
i have recently been going through the same thing. Lost access to accounts, don't own the console it was created on anymore since it died to the Yellow Light of Death. When I try to contact them again about the same issue they'll immediately close the chat window or hang up the call.
