Discussion What's your favorite Mythical Pokemon?

Of the 1025 Pokémon species, there are 23 Mythical Pokémon. However, unlike most Pokemon they are very rarely able to be obtained in-game and thus are almost never included in anyone's playthrough team, especially if you played from release date before any distributions (possible exceptions being the Mew and Jirachi gift Pokemon in BDSP). As such, they are unique among Pokemon since they are usually only obtained in the post game once you've already completed the game and people don't have the same connection to them as they do other Pokemon.

As such, do you have a favorite Mythical Pokemon? And if so, why are they your favorite? Is it the designs? The lore? What is it you like about them?

Discussion The newer games feel too much like a school field trip or a guided tour and not enough like an adventure

1.4k Upvotes

The games used to be about the childhood experiences of going outside and playing unsupervised. Satoshi Tajiri based it on his own childhood experiences of going outside and catching bugs. And you really felt that in Gens 1-6

Then from Gen 7 onwards, there's "adult supervision" everywhere. Not just in the games, but the anime too. That feeling of being an unsupervised kid is gone, you're constantly being watched

Discussion I’m still confused about alpha pokemon

I kinda assumed that they were created by the space time distortions, but I really can’t find anything about that. I have seen some stuff on Bulbapedia about it coming from the concentrate of real like competition, but again, nothing confirmed by lore. So, were they born this way, or created by the space time distortions??? They don’t go away after we finish the main plot, but neither do the space time distortions, and since I can’t study the genetics directly before and after the space time distortions appeared I can only theorize. So, what about you guys? Where do you think they come from? Were they always there and are just mostly gone now, or did they disappear because it’s not genetic?

Discussion How does the Minor Division in Galar even Work and where are there Gyms?

How does the Minor Division work? Do they even have Gyms or they just wait around until the next year to get promoted. I was thinking of a Sword and Shield sequel fan game and the idea is that you have to face the minor division before you get to the major division due to a lack of an endorsement but it that actually how it works? It's very confusing and wish GF actually fully explained how it works.

If you have any ideas, that would be appreciated.

Discussion Clutch Evolution – A friendship-based mid-battle evolution mechanic

Hey everyone! I’d like to share a mechanic idea I've been working on, aimed at adding emotional and strategic impact during intense Pokémon battles — especially in Nuzlocke runs or first-time playthroughs.

Clutch Evolution – Overview:

This is a special mid-battle evolution mechanic triggered only under specific rare conditions:

  • High friendship (e.g., 200+)
  • Survival with 1 HP due to bond (similar to current Gen VI+ mechanics)
  • Close to evolution condition (e.g., 60%+ progress toward the needed level, bond, etc.)

When all these are true, the Pokémon will evolve mid-battle, with a unique animation and dialogue like:

“Your [Pokémon] refused to go down... and something inside it began to change!”

Stat increases apply immediately, giving the player a clutch chance at survival — a mechanic designed to feel like anime-style hero moments.

Why add this? - Makes friendship more meaningful in battle. - Adds drama and uniqueness to emotional battles (e.g., Gym Leaders, boss fights, Nuzlockes). - Still balanced with rare triggers and limits (e.g., once per battle, one-time use per Pokémon, etc.).

Would love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or suggestions. And if any fangame devs are reading — feel free to use or adapt this!

Discussion Sabrina - The Most Misunderstood Character in Pokémon? (Post revision)

TL;DR at the bottom Redone a post I made earlier so it's not 3,000 words long.

Now we all know about how two of the spinoffs (Adventures manga and the anime) depict Sabrina as a villain, but how many of you know what she's actually like?

"Your love for your Pokémon smashed my psychic abilities... The ability to love, I think, is some kind of psychic ability..."

This becomes a crucial part of her characterisation, even if it comes across as a little bit 'magical girl-y'

In HG/SS, she asks the player for their phone number, saying she "thought they'd make a good friend.". Even in Pokémon Masters, she asks the player what do "normal friends" do. This really gives the impression that she probably doesn't have many friends (Aside her Pokémon best friend, Alakazam).

In LGPE, she says she wishes to "live freely", almost as if it's not her holding back her psychic powers, but them holding her back from who she wants to be.

Surprisingly, despite Sabrina being seen as 'scary looking' by fans, NPCs don't seem to find her scary, several characters praise her coolheadedness and prettiness with no mention of fear from anybody.

In Masters, she's actually shown to be shy, going from her mannerisms, and surprisingly seems to get embarrassed easily.

She's also not a fan of fighting or conflict. In Masters, she gets uncomfortable even at seeing arguments, and she even solves a problem by calming down an aggressive Pokémon with bell ringing rather than a battle.

TL;DR: If you read her dialogue in the games, you'll realise she's absolutely nothing like the cruel and nasty villain the early spinoffs depicted her as, and not the powerful psychopathic murderer some fans like to depict her as in fan creations, but instead a shy woman with supernatural powers who's looking for friendship and much prefers peace over violence.

Discussion What's a good challenge or restriction to play with when playing a game for the first time?

I love playing pokemon but I do prefer to play with a challenge implemented (Nuzelocke).

I'm looking to play througg some of the pokemon games I haven't played - basically gen 4 And forward.

Was wondering what would be a challenge I could implement that isn't too challenging but still keeps ilne engaged and thinking.

Discussion Fake Pokémon Games kinda a rant?

Upvotes

Got sold a counterfeit Pokémon Heart Gold, was so excited to play it until I put into my original childhood 3ds and was greeted with "Deep Labryinth USA, INC." I was devastated, I am so tired of people scamming others just for their own benefit. Please be careful everyone when it comes to buying older games. For context I had lost my old version of Heart Gold as a kid, which is the only reason why I don't have it now. I am extremely frustrated and sad. With that being said, help cheer me up by telling me your favorite Pokémon game, feature in a game or favorite Pokémon/Pokémon fun fact!

Discussion "Little League" gym leaders?

Have you heard of Little Cup? It's a competitive mega game using only Level 5 pokemon. With some caveats, but the gist is all pokemon are unevolved pokemon that could evolve, and are level 5. There's a banlist of pokemon that can't be used and all.

What if there was a trainer school, and what if the 8 best young trainers were invited to be "gym leaders" for a weekend? For like a school fair? And the only pokemon challengers could use are level 5 too? It's a little pokemon league!

What ideas for gyms do you have? Each gym has a challenge that fits within a classroom, and a leader with 4 Little Cup-legal pokemon.

Here's the first one I came up with!

Little Leader Cary

Team: Pumpkaboo, Shuppet, Honedge, Litwick

Cary is a known loner, spending more time with pokemon than with his classmates. Naturally, he understood his pokemon more than most, leading to him becoming a very skilled trainer.

Gym challenge:

The lights are off, the classroom draped in black and purple cloth. The only illumination is the scattered jack-o-lanterns across the room.

"Welcome, challenger, to my spooky haunted mansion! Your challenge..."

"...is to find my friends!"

His pokemon are in various locations, hidden in or as decorative objects; a candle, a knight's armor, and a puppet, and one of the jack-o-lanterns too. The layout makes it hard to reach the candle without walking in front of some of the assigned gym trainers.

There is a trash can. There is a Trubbish in there. He belongs to one of Cary's friends and gives you a Leftovers.

Excited to read what you guys come up with!

Discussion Is Bea in college?

I'm a big fan of the gym leaders from Gen 8 (I think they and the trial captains are some of the most fleshed out in the series), so I've been going through their concept arts and translating the text present to see if I can find anything cool, since translations can sometimes lose a bit of meaning.

For Bea specifically, there's a bit of text next to her in casual clothing that reads "Gakusei no sugata," with the guidebook translating that as "school clothes." However, the meaning of "gakusei" also translates to "student," especially those in university. Given that her Crown Zenith trading card depicts her running through what appears to be Hammerlocke in this outfit, does that mean that Bea goes to the Hammerlocke University mentioned in-game? What do you all think?

Discussion Terminology? Ie: Pseudo

I have a question about terminology for certain classes of Pokémon. There’s legendaries, pseudos, mythical etc.. My first question is, is there a term for Pokémon like Magikarp or Golisopod, where the first stage is small and relatively weak and evolves into a super strong second stage. My second question is there a term for three stage evolutions who aren’t as strong as pseudos but considerably strong stat wise(games) and cool factor(other media) ie: Mamoswine, or Dusknoir.

TLDR: Are there fan given classifications past pseudo/legendary?
