Hello to our dearest r/Vancouver community,
As r/Vancouver has grown in the past few years, we've done incredible things. But sometimes, with internal growth and external forces comes necessary change. Thus, it is with both heavy hearts and full sails that the mod team today announces a permanent thematic shift for the subreddit. Moving forward, r/Vancouver will now be a barge-themed subreddit.
This decision was not made lightly. It comes in recognition of the recent and emotional farewell to the McBarge, our beloved and iconic floating McDonaldās from Expo ā86. Once a shining symbol of hope and floating french fries, the McBarge is now gone. As stewards of Vancouverās culture, we feel it is our solemn duty to honour this architectural treasure with the dignity it deserves.
In addition to the McBarge, we also pay tribute to another iconic aquatic icon: the English Bay Barge. After washing ashore in late 2021, the barge quickly became a pop-up tourist attraction and a place of pilgrimage for locals. Though it too is now gone, its the chaos it brought to our shores lives on in our hearts.
Effective immediately, you may notice:
We thank you for supporting this important cultural pivot as we embrace the barge life. Vancouver has many stories, but todayā¦ we are floating only one.
Yours truly,
The Moderation Crew of r/Bargecouver š³ļø (formerly r/Vancouver)

Just want to say thank you to the fantastic city staff who had to run this election today with 60-80% of their coworkers cut by the current city council. The ones at Carnegie were on 8am to 8pm shifts (likely longer now) and likely all the other staff across the city.
I hope folks were kind to them when they finally got their ballot to vote. They have been working hard and diligently to ensure our right to vote was upheld today!
AND REMEMBER, who were responsible for how the election ended up today, deliberate voter frustration and suppression weāve never seen in this city before.

Voting stations at Brittania and Trout Lake were 200-300 people deep all day today. There are only 8 sign in tables at Brittania. Currently itās an 1.5 h wait. This is totally outrageous.
Huge thank you to everyone who did their civic duty today, it was not made easy.
Priority line is short if need it. Please vote.

While the polling places close at 8, if you're in line -- you still can vote!
Also, next time, don't wait till the last minute :)

How much longer do we need to wait?

Thank you to the very sweet lady who bought a few boxes of girl guide cookies while waiting to vote, and passed one of her boxes down the line for everyone to share. It was the best part of my day today. Also massive props to the girl guide and her dad who sold out three crates of cookies, brilliant work.

Britania was packed, line up at Trout Lake too. We're moving here, albeit with the line continuing to fill in behind us.

There are priority lines at the voting places but people won't necessarily tell you how to access them!
Who is eligible: immunocompromised people, people with disabilities, people with kids, pregnant people, older people, people with sensory issues who can't wait (mental health and developmental ones included like ADHD and Autism)
What you need to do: go to the front of the line or until an election official stops you and tell them you need the priority line. They won't ask you to identify why. I highly, highly encourage anyone who wouldn't be able to vote otherwise to use this! ā¤ļø
Also, the City of Vancouver confirmed that anyone in line by 8pm when the polls close tonight will be allowed to vote.

This eagle had a nice 5lb halibut dinner.
Few more people in area with better phones I'm sure have clearer footage.

Doesnāt look like they bothered to dress Vancouver up as a different city. I see Pacific Blvd sign on the Cambie Street bridge kept as is. Melville Street sign is there as well.
