3M surface protection installation

Hi there!

I recently purchased a new vehicle and the dealership recommended the ceramic coating to protect the paint, however it’s quite pricy and they still haven’t called me back to schedule an appt yet so I’m having second thoughts… a family member has had a professional install the 3M Surface Protection on his newest cars… so I am wondering if anyone can recommend an installer and/or might know the cost? Opinion Reminder: Bring Your Reusable Cup!

Posting because I see a depressing amount of people at various coffee establishments around town not using reusable coffee mugs.

So this is just a reminder that reusable coffee mugs are readily available! Please do this small thing and help avoid trash where possible.

Some reusable mug advice:
1. Get a glass mug - stainless steel has a tendency of absorbing coffee flavour and being harder to clean. My fave is the Keep Cup. They sell it at The Good Planet Company downtown in various sizes.

  1. Add it to the list of things you check you have before you leave your house/apartment: Keys (check), Wallet (check), Phone (check), Cup (check). (And if you're me, water bottle (also glass) (check)).

Is it a small thing? Yes. Is it also one of the easiest ways to reduce waste? Also yes.

You've got this! No more excuses!

ISO someone with a Cricut to make a 1-off gold foil sticker (will pay for supplies and labour)

Not sure if this violates rule 4. Please take down if so.

Hi, all. I'm a recent university grad who just one a big award for a very big accomplishment during my studies. The award has "gold medal" in the title, but it truly is in title only. There is no cash prize (this was made clear when I applied for the award), no physical medal, not even a certificate to recognize years worth of work.

So, I'm taking matters into my own hands. My friends and I went to Value Village and found a silly gold medal from some event for $2. Now I want to emboss a circular gold foil sticker with the award title and stick it on the back (flat) side of my shiny new medal. I think this can be done with a Cricut and I'm wondering if anyone locally wants to take on this project?

TL;DR: Does anyone with a Cricut want to help me make an embossed gold foil sticker for an award that I'm very proud of but felt was a bit underwhelming based on the work put in to earn it. I will pay for any supplies and for your labour.

Thanks to bus drivers on McKenzie

I've been commuting on my bike along McKenzie for over 25 years. It's been a great relief to see the bike lanes gradually appear, and I feel a lot safer these days. Especially with the divided bike lanes, there's now a sort of dance that buses and cyclists have to indulge in, where a bus driver will often have a choice between passing a cyclist and turning into a bus stop right in front of them, or kindly holding back to give the cyclist time to get past the bus stop before turning in. I'm grateful and impressed almost every day on my commute by how patient and professional the bus drivers are in this respect, especially when they have to do this repeatedly because the traffic conditions mean that the bus and the cyclist are going about the same speed and the same situation arises at every stop. The drivers of the 26 and 51 especially are very kind and thoughtful around cyclists in my experience, and I'd like to just give them a shout-out so they know how much we appreciate it. Thanks all of you.

Help Victoria's Historic Tam Kung Temple Win a National Heritage Competition!

Fellow Victorians,

I'm volunteering with the Tam Kung Temple in our city's historic Chinatown, and we need our community's support! The temple was recently designated as a National Historic Site (as covered by Victoria Buzz) and now we have a chance to win $50,000 in preservation funding.

We're currently in 2nd place in a national heritage competition called the Next Great Save Competition, trailing by about 3,800 votes. With your help, we can bring this win home to Victoria!

The Tam Kung Temple is the oldest Chinese temple in Canada and a vital part of Victoria's cultural landscape. The funding would help us restore and maintain this local landmark that's been part of our city's history for generations.

How you can help:

- Watch our story (2 min): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GNfQWNGEopw

- Vote daily until April 17th: https://nextgreatsave.nationaltrustcanada.ca/2025/

Every vote counts (you can vote once every day!), and this would be a huge win not just for the temple but for Victoria's heritage preservation efforts as a whole.

Thanks for supporting a local historic treasure. Every vote counts, thank you!

Canadians travelling to the U.S. are warned to expect extra scrutiny at U.S. border

Canada updated its travel advisory to the U.S. Friday warning of “significant” discretion border officials have when screening travellers entering the U.S.

The advisory now has a new paragraph warning people to “expect scrutiny” of their electronic devices and to anticipate possible detentions while awaiting deportation.

Victoria-based immigration lawyer David Aujla recommends avoiding the situation by not bringing a phone into the U.S. at all, saying there is a “very real fear” that anti-Trump material on devices could provide an opportunity for border officials to probe even deeper into a person’s life.

Question Burning on Car Parking Roof/Structure??

Hey everyone,

I've lived in Victoria for just over a year now, and when I came home there was a man on top of our covered parking structure with gasoline, a propane tank, and a lit flame thrower, just walking around sometimes bending down.

I'm not from around here and grew up somewhere with a huge wildfire risk, so my alarm bells were going off, but is this okay?? Like a form of getting rid of moss from the roof or something? Or should I be concerned?

Thanks everyone!

Question Do bikes get stolen with angle grinders downtown?

Do bikes get stolen in busy parts of downtown (that are locked up with good bike locks)? I'm specifically wondering about busy downtown streets. It's hard to imagine someone walking around with an angle grinder and doing it in front of people here, but I've seen videos of it happening in other cities so I'm not sure.

What about wheels that aren't quick release, etc?

And would this happen if you're in a restaurant say, for a few hours in daylight?

How to get a job when you’ve never had one?

Hey everyone, So long story short.. I’m 24F, have struggled a lot with chronic illness the last 10 years which left me unable to work. So I have never had a proper job before. I’ve recently gone through treatment that has me better enough that I can go about my days semi normally. I’m finishing my high school and am going to start college in September. But I want a part time job in the mean time as I’m doing my schooling. I’ve applied to over 30 jobs and haven’t heard back from a single one aside from one my dad hooked me up with for a interview but still didn’t get the job. The only things I know I kinda of qualify for are housekeeping/cleaning jobs but due to my disability I can’t do that much labour work. And I know I’m not hearing back due to my lack of experience. I also don’t have any references… and when I say any I mean I literally have no options atm. So I feel at a loss. I’ve tried to go through the Foundry to help find a job but they don’t have any options for me that aren’t don’t require labour work.

If you have any insight or help for me on how I can find work I’d appreciate it.

My boundaries around work make it a bit more hard as I said I can’t do heavy labor but I also have celiac so I can’t work around fast food etc.

Question People with young kids - what names do you see most commonly?

Currently expecting my first child, and I don’t really know or interact with any young kids…. yet. I know the most popular names in BC based on the government website, but I’m wondering what’s popular in our little city!

We’re not opposed to using a popular name but want to make an informed decision, and would like to avoid our kid being one of many in their class.

So parents of young kids… what names do you see most commonly in your baby groups, daycares, and preschools?

Edit: not looking for advice on what to name our kid, just looking for names most commonly used.

Is it possible to buy tickets from SaveonFood memorial center without an US number?

I’m a tourist, I’d like to see a match at the Save on Food memorial centre but to buy tickets online I need an US number. Are there other options to do that without having an US number?

Have a good day everyone!! :)
