Question Burning on Car Parking Roof/Structure??

Hey everyone,

I've lived in Victoria for just over a year now, and when I came home there was a man on top of our covered parking structure with gasoline, a propane tank, and a lit flame thrower, just walking around sometimes bending down.

I'm not from around here and grew up somewhere with a huge wildfire risk, so my alarm bells were going off, but is this okay?? Like a form of getting rid of moss from the roof or something? Or should I be concerned?

Thanks everyone!

BMW mechanic?

Could anyone recommend a shop to take my bmw to? I have a 2010 bmw. 3 series, the starter stopped working yesterday. I had to tow it to the dealer and they want $2000 to replace it with a remanufactured unit. Can anyone recommend any repair shops that specialize in German cars in town?

Question How to take sailing lessons? (group or private)

Hi I'm looking to learn how to sail with the goal of buying a sailboat for this summer or the next.

What would be the fastest way to take sailing lessons and get all the required info to buy my own boat?

I would prefer group lessons of some sort but would be also open to private options.

Opinion Reminder: Bring Your Reusable Cup!

Posting because I see a depressing amount of people at various coffee establishments around town not using reusable coffee mugs.

So this is just a reminder that reusable coffee mugs are readily available! Please do this small thing and help avoid trash where possible.

Some reusable mug advice:
1. Get a glass mug - stainless steel has a tendency of absorbing coffee flavour and being harder to clean. My fave is the Keep Cup. They sell it at The Good Planet Company downtown in various sizes.

  1. Add it to the list of things you check you have before you leave your house/apartment: Keys (check), Wallet (check), Phone (check), Cup (check). (And if you're me, water bottle (also glass) (check)).

Is it a small thing? Yes. Is it also one of the easiest ways to reduce waste? Also yes.

You've got this! No more excuses!

"We have important news to share with you. Eagle Rise Veterinary Hospital will be temporarily closing as of April 6, 2025.

Like many veterinary teams across the country, we’ve been facing ongoing challenges with staffing. After thoughtful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to temporarily pause our services.

Your pet’s well-being remains our top priority. To ensure continuity of care, all medical records and upcoming appointments will be transferred to Glenview Animal Hospital"

Is it possible to buy tickets from SaveonFood memorial center without an US number?

I’m a tourist, I’d like to see a match at the Save on Food memorial centre but to buy tickets online I need an US number. Are there other options to do that without having an US number?

Have a good day everyone!! :)

Bachelorette in Victoria

Hey all, a small group of us are headed to Victoria in mid-July for a bachelorette. Looking for recommendations for a late morning activity that's outside but close to the wharf, not looking to drive anywhere. We are open to hiking, walking, farmers markets, etc. Something lowkey to enjoy the sun and warmth for a few hours! Anything helps!

Help Me Find Lawyer recommendations

I need a lawyer who can help me with an unresolved workplace sexual harassment situation.

Sorry, I’m not going to give details here, this town is too small, but it’s enough to say that the harasser is still employed and I’m expected to continue working with them like nothing happened, despite an internal investigation finding them guilty of the reported incidents.

Looking for someone local who can help me understand my options. TIA for any suggestions.

Best thrift store for used books

Hi all -

I’m wondering what everyone’s favourite thrift store is for used books (novels). I know there are places like Russell’s but I’m looking for places with a bit cheaper options. Thanks!

Any Hobby watchmakers out there?

Hey folks, I'm just getting into watch repair as a hobby. I’ve got my first vintage ETA 1080 torn down, and I’m learning as I go. The problem is that all the watch oils (Moebius, etc.) seem to be sold in quantities way beyond what I’ll use, especially if I decide this hobby isn’t for me long-term.

I was wondering if any experienced hobbyists here in Victoria would be open to selling me small quantities of the basic oils and greases I’d need for a basic service (9010, 9020, 9415, 9501, etc.). Just enough to get a couple of movements under my belt without wasting a full bottle. I’m happy to pay fairly

Any recommendations for winter tire change-over and/or tire storage?

Hello! I’m new to town and was wondering where locals go to do winter tire change overs?

Any recommendations for storage?

And if you have any idea of costs, I’d love to know as my budget has taken a kicking during the move here!

Thanks so much

Finding a Pet Sitter

I recently moved and the pet sitter I have previously used who was reliable and trustworthy does not work in my new part of town. I'm looking for a way to identify a trustworthy pet sitter and have found Pawshake. Do people have experience with this site? (https://en.pawshake.ca/petsitters/victoria-bc)

Question Travelling without a personal vehicle

My condo apartments getting plumbing work done and according to them there won't be any water for 2 days. I have always wanted to travel to Cowichan village or Villa Eyrie. However I can't drive long distances due to a medical issue. What's the best way to get there? Transit or cab? If it's a cab does any one know how much it would cost? Appreciate suggestions on how to get there.

Help Me Find Mechanics in Westshore area

Just for general servicing and upkeep, no major body work. I was going to Langford parkway but I had a caliper seize recently and when kal tire was repairing it, they saw a bunch of loose bolts and other unusual stuff in the undercarriage that I can’t exactly recall. I get servicing regularly and I was unsettled that Langford parkway didn’t spot this, which is why I’m after a new shop. Plus their wait times to get in are long.

Any shops worth checking out anywhere in the westshore area?

Downtown Langford - much much taller.

I was visiting a friend’s building and saw a sign up in their lobby about Langford’s new town plan.

Wowzers. They’re wanting to be Metrotown, but not at the mall (Westshore town center).

It’s not my municipality (anymore), but I think the “downtown “ on Goldstream is pretty good especially from what it started as 30 or 40 years ago. Yeah, it feels a little fake, Disney fountain? but is pleasant for walking, and has great amenities. I would have it in the running along with Brentwood Bay, Oak Bay, James Bay as a livable spot to suggest to someone moving here.

So my thought: Is downtown Langford old enough to be called “old town” and a new downtown made? Improvements and development could benefit a wider span of people if they happened elsewhere.. meanwhile they could retain the good part they have.

PS - I ‘ve lived in 4 municipalities of “Victoria” including Langford, apologies in advance to the mods if this isn’t Victoria enough. If the airport is fair game, then I figured Langford is too.

Imagery I wasn't able to get a photograph of a lightning bolt during our recent thunderstorm but I got this nice image of the breakwater that day.
