These cats are amazing, they can jump and snag birds right out of mid-air in pitch black darkness at an incredible 'hit rate'

Your floof looks perfectly normal, but if you look closely, you can see Gaia is slightly cross-eyed, which to my lizard brain screams "beware."
17
u/Away_Combination6977 14d ago
I honestly don't see the cross eyed. It only looks like Gaia is focusing on something slightly further away from her. Likely due to a really good zoom lens on the camera?
She's also looking more upwards, and the pupils are more dilated.

u/acceptablemadness 14d ago
She's adorable. I've seen her a couple times and she was sleeping on a little kitty hammock just like a housecat.

I want to see her newborn kittens when she has them in a year or so. They're probably pinkie sized.

I know not to mess with nature or pet wildlife. But in the off chance I’m roaming the countryside of Central Asia and happen across a Pallas cat… I would need to ask my husband to physically restrain me from petting the kitty.

Wild dogs are the only predator with a higher kill rate, but wild dogs hunt in packs and these cats hunt solo so this makes this cat the deadliest solo predator.

With the domestic cat ranking 4th on highest success rate of all cat species.

Generally speaking, success rate goes up as size goes down. Domestic cats are little balls of murder.

Except for my little monster. I once saw him stalk a mouse … the mouse turned around and threatened him. He backed off and the mouse went on his merry way.
I’m afraid in the wild he’d starve to death, unless he found a cat food tree.
39
u/Finrod-Knighto 15d ago
That’s just a predatory instinct solo hunters have, because they cannot afford any sort of injury as that would mean starving to death. It’s why cats “play” with their food. They only commit to a kill when it’s guaranteed and safe. There’s also the fact that rabies and other such diseases exist and if you can’t get the perfect kill on the mouse (there’s a chance of it biting you), it’s not worth it. Plus, domestic cats hunt purely for simulation too, which makes chasing in that situation even less worth it.
28
u/Malthus1 15d ago
I think he’s just inexperienced. He’s never been taught to hunt, other than toys, and doesn’t know exactly how.
My previous cat, a female, was an absurdly accomplished hunter. I watched her go after mice in the backyard - none of that hesitating and batting them about with claws, she pounded out of ambush, bit their necks, and they were dead in less than a second. They were dead without a single chance to defend themselves or escape. She even got some rats that way, and I didn’t even know there were rats in the back yard.
She was very selective in what she killed - she hated to go after birds, would only and exclusively kill (and if I didn’t stop her, eat) rodents. She never played with them and was all business, like a little furry assassin.
The contrast between my previous cat and my current one in hunting behaviours could not be more stark. My previous cat could easily have supported herself hunting; my current cat, bless him, is a hopeless hunter. He relies on being cute for his living!

u/Malthus1 14d ago
Considering he’s right now curled up on top of a pile of soft pillows, with his tummy full of his favorite scientifically designed cat food (he’d turn his nose up quite literally at anything lesser), I’d say he’s chosen a pretty good way of earning his living …

One of my cats growing up as a kid brought down the global average.
Disclaimer: I don't keep outdoor cats as an adult. This was how my parents kept cats when I was 10. I wouldn't make it if I lost one of my kitties.
He tried so hard to hunt all of the time. Stalked bird and anything else you can think of. He lived into his 20s without successfully killing so much as a spider. As a kid, I spent hours watching him try.

Black footed cats are one of the rarest wild cats. Where country do you live in that there would be a chance your cat is really a hybrid?
34
u/genifurboat 15d ago
I'm in Texas. We, unfortunately, have a lot of exotic breeders. The rescue believed it was one particular breeder. One of the vets of a different rescue (where we got another cat) rescued Bengals. She's been helping us with behavioral issues. A lot of it comes down to her just being wild.
Xena Warrior Kitty was given-up by owners who lied about her age. She was young. She's still very small but fully developed.
15
u/Acgator03 Bengal 15d ago
Do they know this exotic breeder actually owns a black footed cat? Even if they do, BFC hybrids would be worth a ton of money and not something likely to be surrendered to a rescue.
11
u/genifurboat 15d ago
The owners didn't breed her but didn't get her spayed. I think they were going to "breed" her before they marked all over their house. Any Bengal is expensive, but I can't imagine the price of Xena.
The "breeder" is well-known. They even advertised their "new African Black Footed cats" last year and then babies currently. The ads run on local TV. 😔
14
u/genifurboat 15d ago
Also, one of our state politicians who breeds animals to hunt, introduced a bill that will probably pass in September. It's to eliminate Texas Parks and Wildlife. It's going to get worse.
5
u/Acgator03 Bengal 15d ago
Xena isn’t spotted though, so can’t be a black footed cat x domestic hybrid. Just like ALC’s and bengals, that marble pattern would not be present in the wild BFC and thus can’t show up in a first generation hybrid. There’s probably a much higher chance of her just being a small domestic cat.
7
u/genifurboat 15d ago
She's only spotted in her stomach. I'm not a zoologist or a vet, so I can't know for sure. I'm just repeating what professionals have told me. She's ours forever either way because we love her.
10
u/Acgator03 Bengal 15d ago
Most domestic cat tabby patterns have spotted stomachs. Most veterinarians likely aren’t familiar enough with hybrid genetics to realize a marble-patterned cat can’t be the offspring of a wild cat x domestic cat.
5
u/genifurboat 15d ago
One, from a rescue, rescues Bengals who said she was a hybrid. We love her either way.
14
u/Acgator03 Bengal 15d ago
I can’t promise someone who works at a bengal rescue truly understands F1 hybrid genetics. I understand you love her either way, I’m just trying to let you know she can’t be a black footed cat x domestic cat hybrid. Marble pattern is recessive and doesn’t exist in BFC, therefore any direct offspring of a black footed cat cannot be anything other than spotted.

I should add this one dealer of exotics is one of the many "Safari Parks" and "zoos" in Texas. We've also fostered a wolf-husky hybrid. They get these animals and give them up when they act as they should, wild.

It's deadly in that it is very successful in hunting. Most animals are only successful a fraction of the time, they're successful more often than not.
Could they hunt a human? Lol no. Probably fuck up your face if they didn't want your attention, but they're not gonna kill anyone easily.

Every time I see a post about this cat species.
I get very very frustrated. Why aren't we domesticating them?
Look what we did to wolves.
I believe in humanity. We can do this. We can do it.
4
u/Tricky-Shake-2379 14d ago
Wouldn’t they just end up as a regular housecat?
Plus if not, they might hybridize with the regular housecats anyway. I mean they are of the same genus after all.

This cat isn’t really the deadliest to people! It’s like how dragonflies are one of the most efficient hunters. Are they going to kill you? Probably not (don’t test that) but they’re still very deadly when it comes to their killing prowess
3
u/BullsOnParadeFloats 15d ago
It's deadly to bugs and voles.
This thing is the size of a mf teacup. My hoodcats are bigger than this thing.
3
u/thanatica 15d ago
Not neccesarily deadly to humans, I would presume. The thing about the size of a baby bunny.

u/Useful_Secret4895 14d ago

The world's deadliest does not mean deadly to humans. It's just got a way higher successful hunt/kill rate than other felines. It most lives off small mice and insects due to its small size iirc.
2
u/Empty-OldWallet 15d ago
Tell me why if our cats go back to being feral they change appearance but these things are damn cute even though they're wild
2
u/dwarf_bulborb 15d ago
Deadly if you’re some type of rodent or perhaps a bird. They don’t hunt humans so they’re not deadly to us
