General Question My Luna moths got exposed to 50F temps will they hatch later?

Post image

I put them in my siblings room because my room was to cold, and I walked in to my siblings room to see the door outside open at night (probably for hours, around a day) the temperature has been normal and warm, before we had a cold snap.

Will this negatively affect my moths? Will they pop out later?

They’re still alive they both wriggled. They arrived on march 22nd and have been out of the fridge and in 70 degree temperatures

General Question How do I encourage moths to eat something?

I have an idea for an artwork, and without knowing much about moths, I wonder if it is possible to encourage clothes moths to eat holes in fabric. I guess my question is, what are the ideal conditions in which this might happen? Could I set something up outside that attracts them? Would it be bad for the environment to attract moths to a nexus? How long would it take? Btw I live in Brooklyn, nyc

Hi, fellow moth enthusiasts! I really want to rear some Polyphemus, Cecropia, and Luna caterpillars this year. Any suggestions on local breeders/hobbyists who might have eggs?

General Question Looking to Source Tineola bisselliella (Clothes Moth) Eggs or Larvae for Art Project

Hey all! I'm working on a fashion/art project that involves organic fabric distressing using live clothes moth larvae (Tineola bisselliella). I'm based in Ireland and looking to source eggs or larvae to start a small, contained colony.

Totally aware they’re pests.. this is for controlled, intentional use only (contained lab setup, no risk of spread). If you know anyone who maintains a colony for research, pest training, or if you've caught some yourself and are open to sharing pls DM me!

General Question Found this corn earworm in one of the 5 ears of (!!) corn i bought at the grocery store

Thumbnail

freaked me out at first but i identified it, cut off the end of the corn and put it all in a jar. It was squiggling around the night that it happened but i didn’t put anything to cover the jar. I check back the next day and i don’t see anything except for what looks like white mold around the areas that were eaten. Is it possible it escaped and is wandering my apartment? Is it possible it’s somehow inside the ear of corn and i can’t see it? Also, if there is no soil for the pupa what happens?

General Question Help to save this little guy

I found this moth on the floor in my house so I brought it outside and offered some sugar water. I've tried to gently coax it onto a flower and discovered that it can't fly. I keep lots of inverts but don't have any experience in this area. What is the best thing to do?

I'm in the UK btw

General Question Cecropia Pupa alive?

Hi all! Please be nice about this as it is my first time with Cecropia. I have had him out for about 4 weeks now. His abdomen doesn’t wiggle anymore but it seems to move back into place when I push it. It seems very stiff though. They say he should emerge from 4-6 weeks. I am just very concerned. Thanks.

Captive Help! I made a huge mistake and removed this pupa from its cocoon. I need advice to maximize its survival, if possible...!

Post image

I opened up a cocoon out of curiosity. It was on the ground in the cold. I figured whatever was in it would be dead or would die once it reached freezing temps later this week.

Lo and behold, it is alive and moving, I've checked on it throughout the day. I don't have an incubator so I have it in a glass jar with a slightly damp napkin, and the glass jar is wrapped in a heating blanket. Is there anything else I can do to maximize its survival?

I appreciate any advice!

General Question What do I do!?

I found this male Polyphemus moth in the grass outside by my school building an hour ago, it was flapping wildly and eventually stopped. It will randomly start shaking (I think it's trying to warm up?) and then it stops. Idk what to do, it's wing is a bit ripped and it's missing the front half of both front legs. Idk what to do with him, is he dying? :(

I've got him in a grassy bag right now, open top but he can't climb out. And I can't feed him, since he doesn't eat. (I don't think Polyphemus moths eat)
