I know, I know.. people ask this often and the search bar is great.. but the ones I’ve seen already have a start somewhere.
I recently discovered how cute shrimp are as pets and would love to start a tank. Looking at cherry or neo as I have axies and in the future would love to get a very laaaarge tank to give the shrimp enough hiding space. I’ve heard a few make it work. But for now, looking to tank them on their own and maybe just toss a few in for snacks at times (since I know living temps are different) ): mean, I know… life cycle man.
Was wondering if anyone has a moment if they could give me a basic run down of what I need, best size tank, filter? Air? What plants do they like? Substrate? Should I give them any tank mates? Can you put more than one kind of shrimp together? Anything I should know before starting out?
I’ve seen some amazing shrimp homes here so I feel this is better than conflicting info on Google without anyone to chime in.
Thanks in advance! (:

I’ve heard they are way more hardy and sustain themselves easier. They are smaller though I think.

Hello! I have an issue as per the title. Last time I posted I got a ton of help. We let the tank sit for a month and everything went well. Water parameters are normal. We have had the shrimps now for around a month and we think we can see eggs at one of them. However since a couple days they have been gathering at the top. Not all but it’s not their normal behaviour.
Is there anything I can/should do? Like I mentioned in the title the tank is filterless so I don’t know how to add oxygen.
Thank you for your help!

This tank has been running for about 6 months now, I started with 4 neocardinia and now there’s around 20. I’ve noticed groups of baby shrimp on many occasions but I think the filter is sucking the majority of them up because I rarely see new juveniles. I’ve tried covering the filter with a sponge and putting a sponge inside the pipe to slow down the flow, but they keep getting clogged up and constantly need rinsing out. I’m tempted to just remove the mechanical filter, but I’m worried about crashing the cycle. The substrate layer is very thick, it’s well established now and it’s heavily planted, I believe this is enough biological filtration to keep the skrimp population happy and healthy but I’m not sure. Has anyone had experience removing their mechanical filter from their shrimp tank? if so what effect did it have on the tank?

I like them because they bring a tank together. For some reason it feels more natural to see a zillion little pikmin crawling around doing their own thing. It’s kinda like a snapshot of the wild or at least a garden. Same reason why I like snails
They’re also useful. Eating leftovers and other whatnot in a tank. Because of this they really don’t need much. At least that’s my experience with red cherry shrimp. Of course I still feed them directly but you cannot deny their utility.
Lastly I just think they’re cute. I think people have a general dislike of tiny crawly things with lots of legs, so this may be a contributing factor. I don’t know they just have a polite disposition that I appreciate.
But what about you guys? Why do you like freshwater shrimp?

Fed my tank an algae wafer and noticed my berrried mama shrimp doing this. Is she okay? Is this normal behaviour for a berried shrimp? Can I help her?

I’ve finally got my tank into a stable condition with my shrimp and haven’t noticed any dead ones in months now, which is great news, but my pH is slowly starting to rise. have a 5 gallon tank with nothing but plants, snails and neocaridinas. before I continue here are my current tank parameters:
ammonia 0 nitrate 20 ppm nitrite 0 ppm GH ~150-200 ppm chlorine 0 ppm KH ~180 ppm pH ~8-8.2 pH
Which is pretty good but what I noticed is the pH level is starting to get quite alkaline. I know neo’s prefer slightly alkaline water but it’s gradually increasing, I think my last test a few months ago was closer to 7.9-8ish, which isn’t a very rapid increase but still an increase. My question is what should I do about this? I don’t want to very rapidly change the pH levels because I know that shrimp prefer stable, non fluctuating water parameters more than anything, but I’d like to nip the problem in the bud. What can I use to stable it out around the 7.8-8 pH level?

I got a berried shrimp late January. By late February 20 of these now juveniles were born. She got eggo again in mid March or so and gave birth earlier this week. She had around 50 children in 2 months!!
1, 2, and 3: pics of the juveniles ( on 3 there is a newborn barelt in focus). 4: mom with juveniles.
5, 6: newborns.

Just bought a small sponge filter for my 12L shrimp tank. Can't find a suitably small pump online (preferably something like an air pump I can hang outside the tank). Any recommendations please??

My mum accidentally took home a baby shrimp from the beach(in UK). Does anyone know what type of shrimp this is and what to feed it and how to keep it alive?

Finally cycled my tank again after having to restart following a copper plant fertiliser incident... New occupants have just been added 🥰

Just got this guy a few days ago, today I noticed some white around his nose and I turned away for a second and most of it was gone. However there are some white dots on his side, is this scut or something, or just harmless coloration I hadn’t noticed before?

Hi everyone ! This is my very first message on Reddit and first tank ever (10 gallon) ! Inside I’m got 6 green neon, 2 snails (clithon) and 5 yellow shrimps, next week will get a Betta 🫡 (hope he will not eat everyone…)
So, I wanna ask y’all, is my shrimp pregnant or just eat to much 😂? Thank you y’all.
