Discussion / Other What do you do with random misc gear?

I've been brutally downsizing my gear, and during this process I've noticed just how many little misc items have built up. The lens support that comes with gimbals, straps, dividers for bags, tripod plates, tripod spiked feet, additional lens caps, storage bags, lens cloths! etc. Items that are in perfectly usable condition but have not been used since I purchased the "parent" item. Since starting this process I now find it annoying all the extras some gear comes with that I have no choice about (action cameras especially).

So during my current mindset shift I've been wondering what others do with these items. Do you throw them out because you're not planning to sell the parent item anyway? Let them build up and find a storage solution for them because you never know when it will come in handy?

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Heavy lens distortion in famous TV series?

Post image

Watching Shogun TV series. Overall quality looks good, but what's the thing with lens distortion? When filming indoor scenes - the entire movie looks this way. The lenses are having heavy focus breathing when focusing between far and near elements, the lines are not straight. Is that a special idea they wanted to achieve, or....?

Hello people, I am currently creating a shortfilm wood turning a lampshade. This is the wide shot and I took a lot of effort in lightning up the scene. I don't have a proper strong enough soft box for the key side so I have to go with a quite hard light on his face.

The other thing I am struggling is the light tubes in the background. Do they appear to bright? Unfortunately they're not dimmable.

I would welcome any kind of feedback here! Thank you!

Discussion / Other Editing Sequence FPS question

I shot everything in 60fps so I can slow down whatever I need in post.

I'm editing on a 30fps timeline.

When I import a clip to the timelines in 60fps, and then slow it to 40% it looks choppy.

Why is this?

Should I have been editing on a 60fps timelines and exported in 30?

Discussion / Other "Can you edit six 45-minute tv show episodes I shot for $4k total?"

If you like a cringey videography story, that speed runs every red flag into one client, this is for you.

I get a call with a woman I met once years ago, calling me about her big new project that she needed an editor for. Imagine a 45 year old snookie 🚩. whenever I get one of "those calls" I always screen it just to see if I can pass it on to a beginner in my rolodex who doesn't care about neediness.

She rambles on about this raunchy mom-com-talk-cooking show that she already had filmed, but needs an editor for. Every new unveil she makes, is a zero coming off the budget, because I know the more someone wants, the less they have to pay.

"Wow, yeah cool. You seem really passionate about this. You're trying to sell this to TV networks I bet, aren't you? We putting it on YouTube? first to get some traction?"

"You get it. Exactly. Across all socials to get some traction and sell it to a big Network. They just gotta see how funny we are, because right now, they don't know us!🚩"

Fast forward, the scope of work is:

- (6) completed 45-minute episodes edited in a "music video style" with motion graphics and memes🚩

- teaser trailers and segment intros🚩

- Due date: May 1st (28 days) because show "debuts" on May 2nd 🚩

"Wow, you guys are quick movers. That's a pretty tight deadline you got there! What kind of budget you working with?"

She goes, "Well, I started this production company. We're a bootstrap Operation here 🚩"

I'll cut it with the red flags, im getting annoyed myself.

She rambles some life story about pulling strings and favors before landing on a budget of $4,000 total for all six episodes.

I said, "okay, ummm... I dont think im the right person for the job, that's a little bit low for what is realistic."

She went down some tornado about how she has this really amazing editor, the problem is he doesn't communicate with her after a while (I wonder why). She ended by asking me how much I charge.

"For something like this, I really don't know. There's a lot that needs to go into it, and realistically to get all the graphics and intros you need done would realistically take about two weeks, and that's before we start editing the first episode. Editing a 45 minute TV show will realistically take 2-3 weeks of non-stop editing. $4,000 is realistic for maybe per episode." ($4k is still too little btw, but it isn't an insulting number)

She was absolutely floored. "We just dont have that kind of money." Granted, I bet you she spends $4k x 6 on bodywork annually.

For the beginners here: This is where the conversation should always end at the latest. The territory I'm about to tread into is just for pure entertainment and masochistic reasons. My morbid curiosity wants me to spend more time on her, because it's been 6+ years since ive gotten to bask in a situation like this.

I give her some advice, "Well, if your goal is to sell the show, I think it would be in your best interest to invest as much money as possible into your pilot episode. Becasue realistically, a TV producer is going to watch the first thirty seconds before landing on his opinion right?"

She answers that she has too much invested in all the episodes and doesnt want to drop them they all need to be done by May. To which I reassure her that she doesnt need to abandon them, the pilot is just a commercial for producers, and once that goes viral on YouTube it will make sense to invest resources into putting the other episodes together.

At this point I say, "I know a guy who would be perfect for you."

There's this beginner editor who I knew from college that has this super power to just... be so freaking attentive that he would annoy even the most needy of clients. and I just wanted to see this marriage happen.

But in order for me to pair them, this lady gave me some homework... gather all of his reels, motion graphics stuff, etc. I basically just said no. Any editor that takes this is going to be taking a haircut on rates anyway. And after more pestering, I actually got annoyed and just gave the lady his number.

Granted, I got permission from the editor to connect them. And I prefaced it as an opportunity for him to practice rejection with a price. Because this job wasn't a job, he would probably never even see the money, use it as a sales call opportunity to say no with a price tag.

I hear back from the editor a few days later. He was asked to do an unpaid test edit. Which pisses me off.

The ask was to match a two shot with a single that the lady didn't think would match up well. He did it for some reason and sent it back. The lady responds hours later:

"Hey, Hope you're doing well. Just wanted to say a big thank you for taking the time to edit our project. It looks really good, but it's not exactly what we had in mind. The other editor was able to add more effects by zooming in on certain parts and incorporating lots of visual effects with motion graphics. My co-host and I are really hoping to find someone who can take it to the next level with some extra motion graphics. Thanks again!"

And here I am, going from excited for the memes, to pissed off and upset - even though I knew exactly what this was, it still surpassed my expectations because of how she treated my editor, and this whole audition process. I almost want to write to her and tell her how disrespectful that was to take advantage of someone who just wanted to help - but I know to bite my tongue instead of hers.

Hopefully you guys get a laugh from this thought:)

Should I Buy/Recommend me a... Recommendations for a video focused hybrid shooter

So I’m more focused on video (recaps, mini docs, commercial work) but I also do a lot of photography (portrait, sport/athletics). A lot of my work is faster paced, so a good rolling shutter is helpful!

I also like to be minimal/carry less gear, while still bringing what is necessary to create the quality I/the client needs.

With that, what would you do/invest in?

I was thinking an FX3/A7iv combo, or just a canon r5 mark ii….i don’t have any experience with canon, but I think they have great offerings right now, and I always love the images I see from them.

I don’t care about swapping systems, and at some point I think I would invest in an fx6 or c80, depending on which route I go.

Thank you for any input you have!

Technical/Equipment Help and Information Tape suddenly not reading?

Thumbnail

Hello! My mom gave me her old video camcorder that she used to bring around during events at school and well, this badboy witnessed me and my brothers childhood entirely!

It still works perfectly, we bought an extra battery and new tapes. I rewatched one of the tapes before and let the battery charge after. However, after trying it again, it suddenly doesn't work anymore. It still turns on, you can still navigate stuff but it suddenly doesn't read any of the tapes nor record anything on the new ones as well.

There are these two blinking errors (the red ones) on the screen that I'm not quite sure what means? It's not SD card related right? Since this particular model doesn't support SD cards, only tapes.

Please, if anyone is familiar with these old camcorders help me :(((

I'm exploring new ways to drum up business. I do decent SEO, running aggressive email campaigns (not helping much though), and getting back to networking groups - might even join a Chamber of Commerce again.
Curious what worked for you.

Appreciate any insight or stories you’re willing to share!

Discussion / Other The Unexpected Challenges of Semi-Professional Videography

I thought I had learned the basics of videography as far as I knew—exposure, white balance, aperture, ISO, shutter speed, bitrate, color profile and the choice between lenses with autofocus or manual focus. However, I quickly discovered there’s an entirely different layer of complexity involved.

Videography presents a host of practical challenges, especially at a (semi-)professional level. It’s far from being a simple ‘plug-and-play’ experience, and what surprised me most is how rarely these challenges are discussed. While many people cover the basics I mentioned earlier, the deeper technical struggles are often left out of the conversation.

For instance, I purchased a Panasonic GH5 for its 10-bit video capabilities, drawn to the promise of superior image quality. Yet, I soon found myself needing to download an external media player just to play 10-bit videos, as standard software couldn’t handle them. Additionally, I realized that Free DaVinci Resolve doesn’t support editing 10-bit footage, pushing me to search for alternatives.

On top of that, mastering color grading proved daunting. Most tutorials focus on V-log, which is great, but Cine-D and HLG workflows feel significantly more complex to grasp. To make things trickier, using focus-by-wire lenses added its own set of challenges—precision focusing can be inconsistent and frustrating compared to manual focus on traditional mechanical lenses.

In short, the technical and artistic demands of videography turned out to be far greater than I anticipated. Still, despite the struggles, the journey remains fascinating and rewarding.

Cheers,
A novice filmmaker

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Hollyland Mics 😵‍💫 HELP PLS

Hi guys! I have a videopodcast with 4 people talking close to each other on a table. Person 1 and 2 have Hollyland Lark Max mics either them (stereo, 1 track) and Person 3 and 4 Hollyland Lark M2 (stereo, 1 track), the 2 receptors connected to 2 cams.

Do you guys know whats the sweet spot for settings so I dont have distorted audio, but also dont get bleeding with each other mics? I know it depends also on how loud people speak, but I mean, how would you start setting up the mic gains, receptor output and also camera gain to not have a noisy or too quiet signal? 😵‍💫

Business, Tax, and Copyright Buy gear NOW to avoid higher prices after tariffs?

Any Americans here considering making gear purchases NOW instead of later this year as planned so you can avoid potential huge price increases due to the tariff situation?

I had a few things in mind I'd probably buy this year if I found a good sale, or once I had a gig signed that could specifically benefit from it, but I'm considering grabbing them now before prices likely go crazy.

Additionally, if I buy now at reasonable prices, perhaps these items will retain value or increase in value on the used market assuming higher new prices also affect the used market upward.

Is this logical thinking? Thoughts?

Used old travel footage to test this Plugin, wanted a retro/Wes Anderson vibe.

Just worried it's too much for saturation as I stayed just below the "legal" broadcasting colour sat scopes.

Notes? Thank you.

Business, Tax, and Copyright School theater videography rates

What have you guys been getting in terms of pricing for capturing student plays? Do you stick to the normal by-hour rates or do you cut them deals? (Schools do the plays every year, so it’s regularly predictable income.) I’m aware of the copyright issues - you can’t sell the videos, but you can charge a rate for capturing the play for their archival purposes if they’ve purchased that option with the owners of the play.

In the days of yore, the school A/V club would handle this for free, but around where I’m at none of the schools have one of those, so I’ve been starting to get requests to do this.

Anyone work in this market segment that can chime in? Thanks

Behind the Scenes Feedback/Help with Lighting and Camera set up for YouTube

Hi! I am new to making content on YouTube and I need help with my set up. I have to tried to learn as much as I can about lighting and also having camera set up etc.

Here is my set up now and what I have done:
Panasonic g7 with kit lens ( Zoomed in as much as I can)
2 Amazon lights adjustable color temp
2 home made grids ( couldn't find proper ones but new ones coming in a month)
Standing Led for the light on my shoulders and face.
My iso is on 400 - also I think my color temp isn't as it should be maybe?

My questions are :
I love my background will change my posters and also maybe get non glare glass or remove glass. Because depending on light you can see the reflection. I know the light is better at 45 degrees but the light reflect so clearly in the back.

What is wrong with my face? I know I have somewhat oily skin but is there anyway to mitigate this? How do I get that great facial lighting with my current equipment? Is my color temperature wrong?

I would really like to optimize what I have to the best I can. Looking for any feedback or Criticism. If it means buying new equipment I am looking to avoid this as i used this as an excuse for the longest and key buying and buying but never recording. BUT I will still take note.

it seems i cant post photos:

How do I do this? / What's This Thing? Reflections and Brightness when filming windows outside

I'm a beginner in videography and currently using a Sony A7 IV with a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 G2. I film content for a business that decorates shop windows, usually during the daytime.

I’m running into two main issues:

  1. The footage often ends up looking overexposed, and I have to lower the ISO a lot just to manage the brightness — but the results still don’t look great.
  2. Reflections on the windows make it really difficult to get clean shots.

I’ve heard that ND filters and CPL (polariser) filters might help, but I’m not sure which one I need, what thread size to get for my lens, or if either would even fix the problems I’m having.

Any advice or recommendations would be really appreciated!
