Need a name for this pigeon!!!

Moist Noodle for some reason came to mind after seeing you wanted water related names.

Cloud is a kinda classic white pigeon name and for good reason.

Whats up with this guy's neck?
 in  r/pigeon  10h ago

I have seen a lot of ferals with funky looking injuries but this might take the cake!

My best guess is that they sustained an injury that separated that piece of skin and flesh from the body but it's still attached at the top by their head. So it's basically skin flap with feathers that are extra wonky from the injury. It's likely drying out and will eventually just fall off. Source: I did this to a large chunk of my heel as a child. Other guess is it's some sort of feather cyst that's causing this super abnormal area of feather growth.

In good new otherwise this pigeon looks very healthy. Hopefully it doesn’t bother them too much.

Their house is a converted baby changing table dresser thing. Although the sign is extra funny given two of my pigeons have wing injuries that limit flight.

Whats this behavior?
 in  r/pigeon  1d ago

That grunt sounds like the standard pigeon “surprised” or “there’s a threat” hoot. It’s used to alert the other pigeons nearby to be on high alert. One of my rescues of 2+ years loves to do it whenever I enter the room he’s claimed that day.

Hopefully they make it back home! I might reach out to the club and send them the picture you took of the pigeon along with your general area or address. In case someone recognizes the pigeon that visited you or if they might want to set a trap around there to catch them.

I also cut up thin cardboard boxes like cereal boxes into thin strips to serve as “sticks”. They really seem to like those.

Always sunflower seeds without shells. Sometimes they are sold as sunflower hearts or chips.

Someone on instagram recommended these plastic wicker baskets to use as nest starters. They are great because they can be easily cleaned with a hose or even in the top rack of a dishwasher.

This website provides tips on how to catch a lost pigeon like this: https://www.pigeonrescue.org/2018/09/11/how-to-catch-a-pigeon-or-dove-in-need-of-rescue/

This group, Palomancy, also has additional resources.

This is u/Little-eyezz00 default message for found pigeons. It’s super detailed and better than anything I could have written so I copied it from their profile.

Nice work!! You definitely saved his life :)

is he eating, drinking, and pooping? Those are the basics and if he has those down, it’s just a matter of finding him a good home. Poops may be runny for up to a day if he has been starving

I can send some local links if I have anything saved for your general region

The FB group sounded promising!

here is a comment that I have saved for found pet pigeons

You can give him water in a deep dish, and any seeds or grains you have like rice, lentils, peas, corn etc.

Pet pigeons usually turn up close to home, so one of the best things you can do is tape up handmade “found pet pigeon” posters in your area.  Posters are the are the best way to get the attention of neighbours, and it is likely one of your neighours is his owner or knows his owner. Also  try to find the owner via  posting on craigslist, local groups, nextdoor app, and classifieds.  If he is a pet, someone is looking for him somewhere.

Local and national pigeon facebook groups are extremely helpful.

If unable to connect with the owner he may be placed for adoption through a local network or pigeon-friendly rescue.  Please make sure they are pigeon-friendly - we can try to help you find a local rescue just ask for help!  If passing along to a vet or rescue please always ensure that they will not euthanize.

Also, if you, or anyone you know, is interested in adopting a pet pigeon, you could hang on to him for a bit and see if he is a good fit. If it doesn’t work out, he can still be placed for adoption after that!

That’s definitely a lost racing pigeon. The leg band and body composition are dead giveaways. Poor baby is lost!

They don’t know how to survive in the wild and this guy definitely needs to be rescued. Then either returned to their owner, who can sometimes be contacted using the id number on the pigeon’s leg band or if the owner can’t be contacted or doesn’t want the pigeon back (unfortunately common) they need to find a home/sanctuary to live in.

Let me gather some more specific instructions on how to trap this pigeon and next steps. Brb

My first pigeon, Pidge, was a rescue so she’s gone through a lot of set ups over the past three years.

The standard large rabbit cage (I like the MidWest Wabbitat cage) or medium to large dog create definitely works. Adding a cheap table top mirror, plastic woven basket, some rocks, and maybe a hide or perch gets you a pretty good starter setup.

My wonderful handy partner flipped a wooden changing table/cabinet into a cage. He put plexiglass panels in the doors as windows, attached a light to the top, and made a shelf perch for her. That was super great especially when our living room had carpet because the solid sides of the cage kept the feathers slightly more under control during molting season.

We just finished building an outdoor aviary for our now three rescue pigeons. It’s an 8x8 foot structure covered in hardware cloth. Definitely don’t need to start which a set up like our outdoor aviary if you only plan on adopting one pigeon.

My second pigeon, Cob, was adopted from Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue. They are located in Chicago and shipped him to my home in Ohio.

While cleaning their cage today I noticed Cob’s feet were extra dirty. So picked him up and started rubbing the dried poop off his feet. Which is when I noticed some fuzzy white stuff on his feet. My partner and I easily removed it with sewing scissors. It looked like he must have been digging at the puppy pads which line his cage and managed to tangle himself. Once removed his feet showed no sign of damage or injury which was good.

We used this as an excuse to also trim his nails and rub some coconut oil on his dry old man feet. Last pic is him looking thrilled after his treatment.

First time rehab attempt, all advice welcome!

She’s missing basically her entire “forearm” bone. So she doesn’t have the bone and tissue structure to support flight feather growth on that side. She’s basically a below the elbow amputate.

Flour is molting and sitting on f’eggs. So cleaning her cage comes with an extra dose of sass.

This is Pidge my first rescue pigeon waving with her “Nemo” wing. She ended up being non releasable due to being found with half wing missing. Food and time worked wonders. Her nub healed beautifully.

She’s currently having an affair with her ex husband while dating our newest female rescue. Happily destroying flock dynamics and spreading constant gossip.

Sounds like you are doing an incredible job! Basically no notes. Sometimes when a pigeon is bandaged they react similar to a dog who’s wearing shoes for the first time. It’ll take time but she should adjust to the bandage.

It’s impossible to say right now if that’s the reason for her abnormal gait or if she has something else going on (metabolic bone disease, nerve injury, cognitive impairment, infection, etc)

She’s also likely very disoriented, exhausted, and in pain. Time, rest, hydration and good nutrition is all she really needs at this point and sounds like you are providing all those things.

General antibiotic ointment is safe to use on pigeons. That’s the only “medical” thing I can think that you could add. Might help the wound a bit. You can apply it with a q-tip seems to work better than a finger when to wound is surrounded/covered by feathers.

Do you have a small scale like food scale you could use to weigh her? You can keep the bandage on, might give some insight into her overall health.

This Cobbler’s soon to be completed new home in our backyard. Currently trying to convince him our lovely flighted female pigeon, Flour, will be a fun roommate. Flour is currently dating his ex wife so there’s kinda a lot of drama. Our flock is a mess 🤣

This is Cobbler. Although he’s unreasonably spoiled he reminds us daily that he wishes we had left him to die from a ripped off wing.
