I’ve come across an 1997 740il e38 for sale, asking 1500. The owner claims to have had it for 9 years and it’s been sitting and getting cranked for the past 6 years. I’ve owned several e46 and e30 3 series. I’ve always wanted an e38 because my grandmother had a black on black 99 when I was a kid and it’s always been a goal to have one. I’ve done some major projects on my other series with learn as you go trial and error and research. It’s going to cost me $400 to tow it home as it’s 3 hours away from me. It would be a weekend project and I have other cars. The only way I’d get is if she took $500-750. Sitting 6 years it’s already going to need tires and a battery and if the transmission issue is simple or if it’s a rebuild I’m still only in the car for $2900-3500 to get it on the road. I feel like that would be worth it but just wanted some education and possible cost estimates on possible issues. I’ve asked about the guides and she is unsure. He husband did all the work but they are an older couple and his health and mind is failing. My buddy works at a dealership and is going to run a car fax and get more history but is this worth it? Or should I hunt around and pay a little more? It has no rust body damage and hardly any interior flaws other than the commons. Believe it or not the cup holder isn’t broken. Thanks for any information.
My end game goal would to be restore it and give it a light face lip and have a weekend queen that would last me for a long time.
