ECs and Activities How exactly do you get ECs?

I I want to build a stronger application but how exactly do you even find ECs? I live in a country where there isn't much to partake in unless you're affiliated with a school or you hava degree. I did consider want to start my own thing but obviously I can't be the founder and president of like a bunch of stuff at the same time and how do you even start a non-profit? (I wanna make it a real thing with actual impact and that lasts, not just those quick attempts at getting into college non-profits that get abandonned the minute the student gets into their dream school)

I feel like all the EC ideas I see online are always related to STEM or Econ, stuff I'm not into or doesn't make sense with my intended majors bc I'm more into Humanities and social sciences (and film as a hobby). And how the hell do people even get awards? Like I said, my country has nothing, but I see people, some who are also from 3rd world countries with several national or regional awards. I looked up everything I could on the internet, anything related to my interests, there's very little and the only things I'd find were articles about competitions that already happened......10 years ago. Idk if I'm searching wrong but I've spent months and found nothing.

I'd honestly appreciate any tips.

Rant So my GPA actually sucks

I tried searching how to convert my GPA to a 4.0 scale cuz I kept seeing conflicting answers everytime I did before. I have an average of 16/20 which is "High honors" in exams in the French system. I converted it and its a 3.2 šŸ’€ . I was thinking it'd maybe be the equivalent of like 3.7 or 3.8 (obviously not a 4.0) but that's so low I can't cope with that. And a 16 is apparently a B letter grade. There's no hope for me, I genuinely wanna cry.

Fluff 'Tis the season

It's a new season in the admissions cycle and that means a new category of panicked posts flood this subreddit.

  • December to January is "I sent my application 2 seconds after the deadline, will I get auto-rejected? Will they even receive it?" season
  • January to March is financial aid confusion and "MIT and John Hopkins, please admit me" season
  • March to May is jam packed with "I can't afford my dream school", "UPenn vs Princeton", "I wasted so many years just to get rejected from Stanford", "I got accepted and my friends are being awful about it" and the classic "Can you guys withdraw from UCLA so I can get off the waitlist" followed by discourse about how waitlists work.
  • March to May is also home of the infamous rescinded posts "Will I get rescinded for because I had one bad grade?" and the "What are my chances of getting of the waitlist?"

Tell me what other seasons of a2c I missed

Has anyone's college choice been influenced by the college subreddits? GaTech, in particular? I think my reddit experience is tilting me away from gatech now
 in  r/ApplyingToCollege  1d ago

maybe you can reach out to students on other platforms? and please don't let a poorly managed subreddit influence your opinion about the school, if Reddit's not an option then try Instagram, Facebook, PM current students, watch YT vids from students, there's even some random forums you could probably find.

How are freshman dorms assigned?

no, the website says first years don't get singles unless they have a specific condition or they're in some situation that would make them unable to have a roomate

Is there a way to show "academic rigor" while out of school?
 in  r/ApplyingToCollege  2d ago

my country doesn't have any, can I do that online? Also what about self studying for APs? Although I'm not sure I'd be able to take more than 1 exam bc of the price

Course Selection Is there a way to show "academic rigor" while out of school?

Idk what to flair this but how can a gap year applicant show academic rigor if you're not in school anymore?

Does taking a gap year hut your chances
 in  r/ApplyingToCollege  3d ago

i'm thinking of an internship (related to my major), writing and publishing my own magazine, doing something related to one of my passions (i wrote about it in my ECs but there really wasnt anything tangible). retaking the SAT to get a 1500+ and some volunteer project still in the brainstorming phase. Also maybe getting a job, self studying some APs (idk if I could take the exams though, they seem rlly expensive), online classes or certificates. That's what I've come up with so far.

what do u do after storyline in drs like harry potter
 in  r/shiftingrealities  3d ago

honestly if i'm shifting to a DR inspired from a piece of media, i only script about changes to the "og" storyline and maybe two or three events I want to see happen. Otherwise, I just let it flow, it's life, there isn't a point in writing my whole future, it sounds like I'd get bored of it pretty quickly cuz I always know everything that's gonna go down

Gap year
 in  r/IntltoUSA  3d ago

I got rejected but I think it was because of a) my lack of extraccuriculars and b) my SAT score, I'm considering a gap year (it'll also allow me to do stuff other than reapply) but I'm worried it'll look bad on my app if I take a gap year without curing cancer. But it would show a lot of improvement compared to my first application. Is it really a bad idea?

Would admissions get less competitive if the application limit was smaller?
 in  r/ApplyingToCollege  3d ago

true, but wouldn'y people would have to go through their list even more thoroughly about their list if they only have a few options?

2

withdraw financial aid?
 in  r/ApplyingToCollege  3d ago

I don't think it would make a difference on your application. If you did retract it and got in, you wouldn't be able to reapply for it. And if you're applying for fin aid, it means you can't afford it and you'd have to take a loan to attend, please don't put yourself in debt for that.

it's literally the norm in my country, you'll find a bidet in every house, every store bathroom, every hotel, or at least a bucket of water with a pot. going without it sounds kinda crazy to me

Discussion Would admissions get less competitive if the application limit was smaller?

Like in the UK when you can only apply to 5 courses.

20 is a huge number, would cutting it down make it less competitive and deter people from just shotgunning to a bunch of T20s they don't really care about? Or would that model do more harm than good?

Got cooked 3.3 GPA
 in  r/ApplyingToCollege  3d ago

I don't think they do auto-reject if the holistic review thing really isn't all talk; They would have looked at the other stuff but they really couldn't get past the GPA.

If you got a great SAT score and decided to submit it then you might have gotten a slightly better shot (and I say might because i'm just some random high schooler, take it with a grain of salt).

I heard SAT scores are often used as benchmarks bc every school and teacher grades differently and but the SAT is a standardized test so it's the same for everyone. From the AO's point of view it probably looks like this: "great achievements but we can only asses their academic level with their GPA and it's not really looking good. I don't know if they can handle our school.

And sure you might be a great student and had a bad time or you have awful teachers but the AOs can't go in your head to assess how ready you are for their school academically, they have to make do with the info you gave.

Application Question Does taking a gap year hut your chances

I've been considering taking a gap year and reapplying for class of 2030. It could give me the time and opportunity to work on my ECs, I would have time to learn a lot of stuff I didn't get to since I had a pretty messy life in high school and work on my mental health.

Anyways, it could be a good thing however I'm scared it would put me at a disadvantage.

And I dont know how could I show academic rigor if I'm out of school? There's like one university in my country and I don't think they offer classes to non-students. I'd retake the SAT, that's for sure. I did consider self-studying APs and taking the exams but they're way too expensive. Also who would be my counselor since again, not in school anymore? Also I have no awards and my country is kinda dead so I litterally cannot find anything.

Would taking a gap year screw me over for my dream Ivies?

Also i'd really appreciate tips on how to go from average to being a competitive applicant, if my chances aren't already screwed.

How do i apply to study in the us as an international student
 in  r/IntltoUSA  4d ago

First off, what do you want to study? What schools do you want to go for and what are you looking for in a university? Start by making a list of what you want and what you don't want in a uni.
Then start finding schools you're interested in, you could search based on what you want to study, maybe the areas they're located in, or the College Board search tool. Dig deep but check the Cost of Attendance first (since it takes into account expenses other than tuition) before digging too deep, you don't want to get attached to a school you can't afford. Check if they have scholarships or financial aid for international students.

Most schools that give financial aid to internationals are need aware so applying for financial aid will put you at a disadvantage but your chances aren't zero if you really want to try.

Make sure your list of schools is balanced so don't place you bets on a bunch of competitive schools that are need aware. Always have more than one "safety" school you can afford. Maybe apply in your home country too just in case.

That's just the easy part though, getting accepted is the hardest part. You have to be a competitive applicant: great grades, great ECs and great essays. You're really gonna need these if you want to go for some big super selective schools or need aware schools.

Make sure you write down all the costs for both applications and the COA and that it fits in your budget. This includes the application fee and financial aid application if you can't get a fee waiver.

If you haven't taken the SAT, definetly start preparing for it, try to reach for 1500+ and you'll probably have to take an english proficiency test and try to get the highest score you can.

The amount of money you'll need depends entirely on where you choose to go. Some schools, like state schools have tuition fees around $18k while Ivies are $65k+.

Either way you'll need an F-1 student visa to attend.
