Hi OP. First I want to say how proud I am of you for surviving your difficult upbringing AND for being in recovery! You kicked the habit and it sounds like you are taking much better care of yourself now. I cannot overstate how much respect and admiration I have for you.

That said, teeth are tough. I didn’t used to get many cavities at all, until I used charcoal toothpaste for a few months when it was a fad and it really impacted my enamel (now I get cavities all the time). I haven’t lost any yet but it’s like night and day. This is just to say that even small things can have a huge impact on teeth.

Depending on what state you live in (assuming you are in the US) and what your income is, you may qualify for dental through state insurance. There may also be non profits In your area that can help with getting you the dental care that you need. I know it sounds daunting right now, especially since you work so much, so my recommendation is to set aside a little time every week to make a few calls or do some research. If you are in Massachusetts I may be able to provide some leads.

Last, I want to say that as someone who is often out and about in my community, I encounter many many people who are missing teeth. I cannot speak for anyone else, but I know that I would not dream of judging them. While it’s something you may be self conscious about, it is also something that speaks to the fact that you are a survivor! And you will figure out a way forward. It will take time but you can do it. The worst is behind you.

Get the vet’s advice. Show them pictures of the posters. Also, get the vet to assess how long ago she gave birth, if it’s already happened. There may be a litter of very young kittens that need her (which you may want to try to find and reunite with her). Based on your description, personally i would not return her, but also keeping her could create risk for you. If these neighbors see her in your window, your cover is blown. I would also try to establish a timeline for how long she’s been “missing” for.

Best plan is to get her assessed by the vet, and then start looking for a home for her. I would also report her condition, along with documentation from the vet, to your local humane society. They may be able to assist with getting the kittens, along with providing education to the neighbors.

Also, thank you for saving this cat. Keeping her on a leash outside is (in my opinion) abuse. It means that she cannot run away if a predator like coyote or wolf or even an unleashed dog or a stray cat decides to cause her harm. These neighbors are absolutely unfit owners.

After reading your original post, i am awestruck by the fact that you pressured your drunk and vulnerable (if she wants to get blackout drunk that tells me she is not as stable or mature as one might hope) friend to sleep in bed with a guy who she told you explicitly that she didn’t want to have sex with. The guy in question, mind you, who seems like he’s sort of shit with boundaries (refused to take the couch, etc.). The fact that this straights girl is trying to hook up with you while inebriated should tell you all that you need to know about her ability to make sound decisions. You fucked up BAD.

Does it suck to spend your night taking care of The Messy Friend? Yes. But she expressed her boundaries early on and you let this happen despite that. She trusted you.

I have had similar situations happen, and have physically pulled drunk friends off of people because they had told me earlier what their boundaries were. These friends ALWAYS thank me. When we are drunk we make decisions that our sober selves wouldn’t dream of, because our decision making abilities are so egregiously impaired.
