U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

How did people know there was protests yesterday?

1.9k Upvotes

If I had known, I would have gone. How did people find out or know that that was happening? I feel really sad.

Edit: Thanks to anyone to who has an answer. I really do appreciate you 🫶🏻

Why does everytime i see a pic of an incel. They look totally normal and sometimes even decent looking ?

Yet when you see their posts or comments, you will notice that they call themselves and each other very ugly. Sometimes they even go further and call themselves "subhuman" or "sub5" or some weird racial slur.

Is blaming their looks the easy answer to their non existent dating lives ? or they genuinely have body dysmphoria? Or it's something else ?

In one episode of House MD, they decide to wake up a dying person (who is unaware that they are dying) from an induced coma so that this person can say farewell. Isn't this seriously unethical and possibly criminal?

They present the choice (wake up or don't wake up) as some sort of a 50-50 dilemma, which is insane. It's a no-brainer both from an ethical and legal point of view, right?

Edit: The Amber case

How do so many people just… not drink water?

10.8k Upvotes

My partner is one of those people who never drinks water. If anything they’ll have a soda, but most of the time they don’t drink anything at all. My cousin would also never drink water growing up, only milk.

How is this comfortable? I can’t go half a day without drinking water, let alone multiple days in a row.

Why is it that when there is a protest in America, people always say they are paid actors?

I see it every time there is a protest, whether for social or political reasons. Do Americans not have the agency to protest without it being a conspiracy?

Why are so many men emotionally attached to Batman?

what is it about Batman that has such a strong grip on men? My brother, my cousins, guy friends. My brother has had the same Batman wallpaper on his phone since very long even on his laptop. One of my cousins has a ceiling yes, an actual ceiling of bat sign. One of my friends even has a Batman figure on display at his place. They treat Batman like he's not just a fictional character, but a personal mentor, a life coach. I personally love Batman and his movies But why guys want themselves to be called Batman?

Why don't we use sea (salty) water for non-drinking purposes like flushing toilets, showering, and all that and leave the clean water for drinking?

Would logistics make it too complicated so this isn't feasible?

How can I convince my mum to let me keep my stuffed animals and fairy lights in my room?

Upvotes

I turn 25 on the 20th of this month and I'm living with my parents because my work is closest to their place, and my mum keeps saying that by the time I turn 25 she wants me to keep my stuffed animals in my wardrobe instead of on my bed and to take down the fairy lights I have in my room.

I said "Oh yes, God forbid I have anything fun in my room," and she was like "you're 25, soft toys and lights are fun for you?" I said "yes? Doesn't harm anyone," and she said "it's harmful for your maturity!" and left.

How do I convince her to let it go and just let me have things I like in my room?

Do some people really believe all humans come from Adam and Eve.

It seems ridiculous considering all the complications.

Is having a monetary bail system just a blatant way of benefitting the rich and hurting the poor? Is there any argument against this?

What am I missing? Especially since it’s basically a deposit that you get back anyway, you don’t even have to really pay, you just have to have money. How is this just an accepted part of society?

Is it just me or has the quality of fast food gotten much worse recently?

The last few times I’ve had anything from any fast food restaurant, I really didn’t enjoy it. I used to be someone who ate fast food multiple times a week and always enjoyed it but now the food just doesn’t taste as good. It doesn’t matter which fast food place it comes from either. For example, I used to like Baconators from Wendy’s but the last one I had, the meat tasted gross and I couldn’t even finish the burger. Same thing for Taco Bell, the meat tasted gross on my Tacos last time I had it. I mean the meat has probably always been low quality and gross at these places but now it tastes even worse than it used to. It could just be my imagination but I don’t think so. I’ve almost completely stopped eating fast food now because it’s been so bad the last few times I’ve had it.

If the super rich/elite folks truly want to make the regular folks poorer, how will the rich ones continue to make money if the poor don’t have any money to spend on their products & services?

I’ve read about the theories that the goal of the billionaires in power are intentionally trying to bankrupt the economy and its people in order to take over more control of businesses and property, etc. (I know that’s a bad summary).

How exactly is that supposed to work? If no one below them has any money to spend, how will they continue to make money off of those people?

I can’t wrap my head around how that plan is a good one. Can anyone explain?

Why doesn't someone form a pharmaceutical company to make cheap insulin?

Insulin's subject to price gouging in the USA, and it's pretty cheap to manufacture. Why hasn't anyone either started a new company to undercut other manufacturers, or just imported it from a foreign producer. I get there'd be some regulatory hurdles, but surely they can't be that hard to overcome? Plus, it's out of patent, isn't it?

Would any other nation be able to subdue the Houthis militarily and open the Red Sea?

To be clear - I am not saying this in a political sense. I've heard all types of answers such as "Yes, get Israel to commit to a ceasefire", or "Through diplomacy, of course!". My question is focused strictly on military prowess.

There're many analysists stating things such along the lines of "If the US is unable to defeat the Houthis, how could they defeat *Insert peer nation*". China or Russia? If they could, what tactics would they employ?
