U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

How did people know there was protests yesterday?

If I had known, I would have gone. How did people find out or know that that was happening? I feel really sad.

Edit: seems like I need to start watching the actual news more. Thanks to anyone to who has an answer. I really do appreciate you šŸ«¶šŸ»

How do so many people justā€¦ not drink water?

7.9k Upvotes

My partner is one of those people who never drinks water. If anything theyā€™ll have a soda, but most of the time they donā€™t drink anything at all. My cousin would also never drink water growing up, only milk.

How is this comfortable? I canā€™t go half a day without drinking water, let alone multiple days in a row.

In one episode of House MD, they decide to wake up a dying person (who is unaware that they are dying) from an induced coma so that this person can say farewell. Isn't this seriously unethical and possibly criminal?

They present the choice (wake up or don't wake up) as some sort of a 50-50 dilemma, which is insane. It's a no-brainer both from an ethical and legal point of view, right?

Edit: The Amber case

Why don't we use sea (salty) water for non-drinking purposes like flushing toilets, showering, and all that and leave the clean water for drinking?

1.6k Upvotes

Would logistics make it too complicated so this isn't feasible?

Do some people really believe all humans come from Adam and Eve.

It seems ridiculous considering all the complications.

Edit: If you do, why?

Is it just me or has the quality of fast food gotten much worse recently?

The last few times Iā€™ve had anything from any fast food restaurant, I really didnā€™t enjoy it. I used to be someone who ate fast food multiple times a week and always enjoyed it but now the food just doesnā€™t taste as good. It doesnā€™t matter which fast food place it comes from either. For example, I used to like Baconators from Wendyā€™s but the last one I had, the meat tasted gross and I couldnā€™t even finish the burger. Same thing for Taco Bell, the meat tasted gross on my Tacos last time I had it. I mean the meat has probably always been low quality and gross at these places but now it tastes even worse than it used to. It could just be my imagination but I donā€™t think so. Iā€™ve almost completely stopped eating fast food now because itā€™s been so bad the last few times Iā€™ve had it.

Is having a monetary bail system just a blatant way of benefitting the rich and hurting the poor? Is there any argument against this?

What am I missing? Especially since itā€™s basically a deposit that you get back anyway, you donā€™t even have to really pay, you just have to have money. How is this just an accepted part of society?

Why doesn't someone form a pharmaceutical company to make cheap insulin?

Insulin's subject to price gouging in the USA, and it's pretty cheap to manufacture. Why hasn't anyone either started a new company to undercut other manufacturers, or just imported it from a foreign producer. I get there'd be some regulatory hurdles, but surely they can't be that hard to overcome? Plus, it's out of patent, isn't it?

Do our pets only love us because they have no choice?

1.5k Upvotes

Not sure if this is the right sub but Iā€™m curious. Pets usually have no choice in who adopts them and what people they end up with. So Iā€™m wondering if they just develop some sort of ā€œStockholm syndromeā€ and only show us love because they donā€™t really have another option and decide ā€œhey Iā€™m stuck with this two legged thing, and they feed me and pet me, so I might as well just lean into it.ā€

Currently cuddling with my cat and it just crossed my mind!

Why aren't pan handles welded?

All the pans I've owned have all had the handles bolted or riveted on and it's a pain to clean when stuff gets caught under/around them. What is stopping them from just welding the handles on instead?

Why didn't the Paul brothers ever get as much hate as Justin Bieber in the early 2010's?

Itā€™s some weird cultural double standard, honestly. Bieber was a kid doing kid things and people treated him like he was the Antichrist of pop music. The Paul brothers? Full-grown men pulling off WWE-level stunts in real life with actual consequences and somehow theyā€™re just ā€œcontroversial content creators.ā€

I mean, sure, people do hate the Pauls ā€” don't get me wrong ā€” but itā€™s not that universal, red-hot, foaming-at-the-mouth loathing Bieber got. He was the punchline. You couldnā€™t say ā€œJustin Bieberā€ in a middle school hallway without someone screaming ā€œHE SOUNDS LIKE A GIRLā€ like it was a national emergency.

Do bilingual individuals really change languages in the middle of conversations as they do in movies?

E.G. In movies if two individuals speak Spanish but also speak English, then they might transition to English in the middle of the conversation. Granted this might be a way to make their conversation easier to understand by the audience, but I like to believe that at least a few conversations are spoken in more than one language.

Does this happen in real life?

How many of you are actually paying attention to other people in public?

1.9k Upvotes

As someone with social anxiety, I think everyone is looking at me and judging me. That seems extreme. Am I irrational?
