Soft Paywall Trump Admin Threatens to Stop Social Security If DOGE Can’t Have Data
https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/trump-musk-stop-social-security-doge-data-1235300785/9.3k

Donald Trump’s interim Social Security chief suggested Thursday night he will effectively turn off the agency that manages the essential safety net program for seniors and the disabled, if Elon Musk and his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) can’t access the non-anonymized sensitive personal information and data of hundreds of millions of Americans, based on a judge’s order.
“My anti-fraud team would be DOGE affiliates. My IT staff would be DOGE affiliates,” said Lee Dudek, acting Social Security Administration (SSA) commissioner, arguing the order was too broad, according to Bloomberg News. “As it stands, I will follow it exactly and terminate access by all SSA employees to our IT systems,” he said, adding: “Really, I want to turn it off and let the courts figure out how they want to run a federal agency.”
Dudek’s threat to block SSA employees from using the agency’s IT systems — a move that could halt Social Security payments — came in response to a judge’s temporary restraining order in a case brought by the AFL-CIO labor union. The order bars Social Security Administration officials from allowing DOGE, including Musk, and the SSA’s DOGE team to access personally identifiable information. It also directs Musk and DOGE to delete from their possession all non-anonymized personal data, and bars them from having access to SSA computers or code.
And there it fucking is.
They're trying to use the pretext of the ruling as cover for shutting down Social Security like they have always wanted to do.

We're going to be manufacturing child-sized pimpwear the likes of which has never been seen before, perhaps, in the history of the country. The manufacturing of kids pimpwear was zero under Biden, nothing, total disaster, they said it couldn't be done, but we're doing it at a pace that you wouldn't believe. Size 4 gatorskin boots, children's velvet suits, tiny pimp canes, made right here in America people, believe me when I say we're bringing manufacturing back and we're bringing back families who work together to meet the needs of hard-working Americans and to make America great again!

Under Biden, there was one greeter at each Walmart door, Sad! Trump's plan will give us 20, perhaps 30, greeters at every Walmart entrance. Exactly. The head of Trump's Faith department (Paula White) practices Prosperity Gospel, which Google summarizes like this:
Prosperity gospel, also known as the "health and wealth gospel" or "name it and claim it," is a theological movement within Protestant Christianity that emphasizes the belief that God wants believers to be prosperous in health, wealth, and happiness, achieved through faith, positive declarations, and giving to the church. Here's a more detailed explanation:
Core Beliefs:
God's Will for Prosperity: Adherents believe that God desires believers to be richly blessed in this life, with physical well-being and material riches being seen as signs of God's favor.
Faith and Positive Declarations: They emphasize the power of faith, positive thinking, and declaring blessings to attract health, wealth, and happiness.
Giving to the Church: Donations to the church are seen as a way to "invest" in blessings and attract God's favor.
Jesus's Sacrifice: Some prosperity gospel preachers assert that Jesus died to take away every sickness in this life and to atone for the "sin" of financial poverty.
So basically poor people deserve to be miserable because they must have sinned. It's obscene.
66
u/duke_chute 15d ago
I think the guilt of those antivax parents will eventually catch up to them and lead to a suicide. Cognitive dissonance has some crazy power over the mind but can only take it so far and for so long. Can't imagine knowing that your outright stupidity directly caused your child's death.

These people are in an… interesting state of mind.
They still might be on a honeymoon period from the election. The outcome of the votes makes them feel valid in being the worse version of themselves.
So when something terrible happens; the mental barriers are strong.
Like you said though, it will catch up. Likely off camera, since they won’t want to admit they were wrong. Then they’ll stop being open supporters (there will be exceptions)
11
u/GrafZeppelin127 14d ago

Everyone who has thought a 401k is their way to be retired needs to understand that we are seeing the bare truth around that - your savings and investments at retirement time are dependent on whether the US elects a clown, and that a bunch of ultra rich mega billionaires call the right shots with their mega corporations.
If they don't - and they don't sometimes - they will sell off some of their insane amounts of shares and exercise options as prices fall (they will get theirs) and you are left saying "but I invested, I'm retired!"

I think they do. It's as simple as Matt and Trey of South Park make it look. The common man has complained 'dey took our jerbs' when it was the corporations that sold them out. They easily directed their anger by purchasing the media who in turn blamed it on brown people and liberals. Anything that punishes them is okay so long as it punishes the ones they are told not to like too. They are so put out with the reality they voted for that they want something new.
So the plebs are basically the Borg at this point. Whatever the hive mind instructs.
...Meanwhile over in William Gibson Fantasyland... the TechBros are cheering it on in hopes of a predatory rescue. They want full on Cyberpunk corpostates where the populace is 100% reliant on them.

Excellent point, the corporations via technology and logistics have taken our jobs. We have the technology to manage complex supply chains, and the logistics to be able to move products to and from wherever their cheapest to make and assemble.
Some of this is good and bad. It will lead to the poorest of nations being lifted out of poverty, if done correctly, as production flows to their cheap labor. It's bad for the environment as we're now shipping things across the world, often unnecessarily, so that they can get the cheapest labor.
In the end, we're still one of the richest countries in the world. There's more than enough jobs and money for everyone. If we enacted common sense guard rails around capitalism, we could easily have it all.
Those common Sense guardrails would look like social security, healthcare for everyone, a minimum wage that insured that anyone who was working could have a decent living, forcing employers to hire most of their workers as full-time, protecting our environment from pollution, protecting our children from diseases, and all the other things that make sense in an advanced society with great wealth and technology.

I'm not sure it's the wrong attitude. Have you seen Republican town halls of late? They're full of absolutely furious older conservative types. Most of these people own guns and their anger is fairly directed at people promising to destroy America and actively threatening their lives.
What was it that Wyoming rep said while defending the elimination of life-or-death jobs against a town hall packed with over-60s, maybe over-70s shouting at her? "It’s so bizarre to me how obsessed you are with federal government."
This person's constituents were screaming at her and she blew them off and essentially said she was alright with killing them and their livelihood. The GOP is now in the fuck around and find out phase with their own base and it will bite them in the ass. I'm alright with that. We Dems can just sit back and make popcorn for once.

Our civil servants need to actually start doling out punishments.
They don't need to go after the higher end people like Rubio or Musk, they can go for the rank and file that keep doing these guys' jobs. The executive leadership are idiots and don't know how anything works, if the ancillary staff starts getting locked up and face real, actual consequences they'll stop helping.
Start with the lawyers and DOGE employees and it probably won't take much longer than weeks. Get them charged on state crimes which trump can't do anything with, because almost assuredly they're breaking state laws too now. Get the governors of places around DC on board, have them start jailing/firing state troopers that won't comply with arresting these folks too. Eventually someone will get the picture and then the pieces will fall into place.
Maybe it escalates to actual armed conflict. Maybe they'll limp dick their way away and go "fine" and fuck off. I'm betting on the latter because these people are all so fucking stupid.

The recent Time interview with Grimes, Musk's ex-wife that he co-parents three kids with, was chilling when she made the comment that when AI starts taking over jobs, and the population will be thinned out.
It was strange to me that the interviewer didn't pick up on that comment and dig deeper into it. Of course my brain goes to the thinking that she has insider information.

People overcomplicate it but this is what's going on, as someone who used to be extremely right wing and still has a right wing family.
To look at it from the other perspective, there ARE problems in America, right? Like duh, of course there are, we talk about em all the time. They've got the same ones, and despite that they still feel proud of "their country" even though they can't really define what that means. They feel beaten down, they see the poverty and the lack of opportunity, and they hate it. But they're still proud of their country.
Well, when someone tells you "you SHOULD be proud of your country, you should be proud of yourself, we're all great, and THIS is what's causing the problems in this country" they're inclined to listen, especially when the other side calls em stupid and uneducated.
Then an entire media empire springs up echoing that exact same idea. You are great, your country is great, this other thing is the problem, 24 hours a day for 7 days a week, and it's an addictive thing. It soothes their ego, makes them feel like the future is bright, and makes them feel righteous in their love for their country.
It edits Trump's speeches, makes everything really easy to digest and understand for literally the lowest common denominator in the country, breaks everything down from the news into bite sized, easily digestible chunks, and has opinion pieces about both fun stuff and important stuff.
And now they've been listening to this media machine for 30 years and suddenly the people who called them stupid are freaking out about the person they like. They're not gonna get up off the couch.

u/RadiantNefariousness 14d ago
& they’re offering simple (yet incorrect) solutions to complex problems. it’s easier to blame others than to figure out how the government operates.
29
u/Sminahin 14d ago
Worth noting that our side isn't even recognizing many of these problems and we're definitely not offering a vision on how to get out of 'em. Every time I read a Krugman piece in the NYT on why the economy is actually wonderful and people are wrong, I wanted to scream.
When one side offers a convenient, blame-filled narrative and the other has a bunch of Washington insiders speaking in politicianese who don't even seem to understand the assignment, well...makes it really easy for a snake-oil salesman to slide in.

IIRC every global recession can be traced back directly to republican policy when they control two or more of congress, senate, president.
I dread to think what's coming down the tracks this time, now they have all three AND partial control of Supreme Court. The things they did with subprime mortgages to collapse world economy in '08? They're doing it again RIGHT NOW. Except this time it's being done more sneakily via private equity / variable rate loans to successful businesses. Ask yourself why successful businesses (Joanna, 97% of stores profitable) are bankrupting.
They're tying it to pensions this time because they know the public won't stand for the banks being bailed out again.

This was true one election cycle ago. But with the pace that things are happening right now, the pace at which checks and balances are nakedly being dismantled, it doesn't matter if 100% of the retirees get mad and try to vote in 2026. Irreparable harm will have already been done (in many cases it already is done NOW), and by the midterms the very nature of voting in this country will likely have changed, if it even still exists.
Retirees won't save us now, no matter how much they come to their senses. Other methods are necessary.

Clearly if he can't figure out how to run a federal agency without the court's help, he needs to be fired. The courts already told him Doge can't have the data and he is unable to follow that simple order .
Rehire his predecessor or find someone competent enough to at least follow previous procedures.

They may think they have the military but those veterans all have guns and know how to use them. And those other folks that won't have a home, food in their belly, medicine, or access to healthcare, they got nothing to left to lose either. The military ain't shit when you got 200+ million people pissed off with all the millions of guns that you got in this country. Yea there’s a reason the saying is “society is only three meals away from collapse.” People with nothing to lose, no way to house or feed themselves and an almost certainty of suffering medical debt or death very quickly turns otherwise passive people into monsters. And there’s no recompense for that. It quickly goes to “I have nothing left to live for and I’m gonna make that EVERYONE’S PROBLEM”

"IF we're not allowed to do illegal shit your granny's gonna die" may not be the flex that they think it is. And I can't see a judge taking very kindly to that kind of extortion - especially since there is nothing in the judge's order that would require them to stop payments. Calling their bluff on that one seems to be a no-brainer. Make them do it and let them face the fallout from it. Switching off Social Security payments is widely agreed to be a major red line from which everything will go downhill pretty damn quickly, so it'd be interesting to see if they have the courage of their conviction to actually go through with it. I don't think they will. Sure, Trump and Musk might be flying high on narcissism and/or ketamine right now, but at least some Republican lawmakers still have a bit of survival instinct left to see that if they stand by and let the White House outright kill their constituents, things might get ugly for them, regardless of how many millions Musk spends on the next election.

No one's going to stop them. There are no legal ways of fighting back and they'll throw anyone who fights back in any meaningful way in jail.
I work with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Some people with IDD can get a job at the grocery store, but a lot of them have both intellectual and physical disabilities and there are simply no jobs that they can do, so they rely entirely on SSI.
They need PCAs to take care of them, which Medicaid pays for. They have lots of medical care, which again, Medicaid pays for.
Shutting down social security means these people will not be able to have PCAs to toilet them, bathe them, dress them, feed them, or do anything to make their lives enjoyable. What are they supposed to do? Many of them are quadriplegics with intellectual disabilities. They will lose their homes and their care and they will die.
Which, and here's the thing: Republicans don't like disabled people and would be very happy to get rid of us. If you can't work a high paying job, they hate you.
Even though shutting down social security would be devastating, I don't see how we're going to save it unless something that drastic happens.
